What Is CBM?
CBM is the abbreviation for cubic meter, the SI unit used to express three-dimensional volume. One cubic meter is the space inside a cube measuring 1 meter long, 1 meter wide and 1 meter high. In freight, CBM describes the amount of cargo space a shipment requires before allowances for pallets, bracing, irregular shapes and unusable gaps.
CBM matters because a large, light shipment can consume more vehicle or aircraft space than a small, dense shipment with the same actual weight. Ocean less-than-container-load rates often use volume or a weight-to-volume rule. Air and parcel carriers often compare actual weight with dimensional or volumetric weight. The governing tariff, route, carrier and service decide the billable method.
How to Calculate CBM
For a rectangular carton, multiply its outside length, width and height. Then convert the result to cubic meters and multiply by the number of identical packages.

The division factor changes because linear conversions must be cubed when calculating volume. Converting centimeters to meters uses 100 centimeters per meter. Cubing 100 gives 1,000,000 cubic centimeters per cubic meter.

CBM Calculation Example
Ten cartons measuring 50 cm x 40 cm x 30 cm
Assume each carton weighs 8 kg and the selected volumetric divisor is 5,000 cm3 per kg.
The total carton volume is 50 x 40 x 30 x 10 / 1,000,000, which equals 0.600 CBM. The volumetric weight is 600,000 cm3 / 5,000, which equals 120 kg. Since 120 kg is greater than the entered actual weight of 80 kg, the tool shows 120 kg as the estimated chargeable weight. Carrier rounding and service rules still control the billed figure.

CBM
Physical shipment volume measured in cubic meters. It depends on packed outside dimensions and quantity, not mass.
Volumetric weight
A pricing weight derived from package volume and a carrier divisor. A smaller divisor produces a higher volumetric weight.
Chargeable weight
Often the greater of actual and volumetric weight, subject to carrier rounding, minimums, density rules and the selected service.
DHL explains volumetric weight as a measure of shipment density and notes that the higher of actual and volumetric weight is commonly used for cost calculations. FedEx publishes a 139 in3/lb method for many US package shipments. DHL examples also show metric divisors such as 5,000 or 6,000 depending on the product and transport context. How to Calculate CBM for Multiple Cartons
Identical cartons
Enter one carton's dimensions and the total quantity. The calculator multiplies the per-package volume by the number of packages. Actual weight per package is multiplied by the same quantity.
Different carton sizes
Calculate each carton group separately, then add the group volumes. You can enter a previously calculated total in the Additional shipment volume field and add its actual weight in kilograms. Keep a simple packing list with dimensions, quantity, CBM and weight for each line item. This makes the total easier to audit.
Palletized cargo
If cartons ship on pallets, use the final loaded pallet's outside length, width and height. Include pallet height, overhang, corner boards, top caps, straps and any protrusions. Adding carton CBM alone can understate the transport space after palletization.
Container CBM and Capacity Estimates
A container's nominal internal volume is not the same as usable cargo volume. Carton orientation, pallet footprint, load distribution, bracing, door opening, ventilation needs, cargo restrictions and empty gaps reduce practical utilization. The calculator therefore applies a user-selected usable-volume percentage before estimating package capacity.

Capacity warning: These presets come from one Maersk dry-equipment specification sheet and are rounded for planning. Container builds and assigned equipment differ. The container safety plate, carrier equipment specification, door opening, legal road limits and cargo securing plan take priority.
The estimated number of containers is the larger of the volume-based and actual-weight-based results. If you leave actual weight at zero, the payload check is unavailable. A volume-only result does not confirm legal or safe loading.

How to Measure Cargo Accurately
- Finish packing before measuring. Use the shipping carton, crate or loaded pallet, not the bare product.
- Measure the longest outside length, widest outside width and highest outside height.
- Include handles, bulges, wheels, bands, corner protectors and protruding parts.
- Use one unit for all three dimensions. Do not mix centimeters and inches in the same calculation.
- Record the quantity and actual scale weight separately.
- Follow the carrier's measurement and rounding instructions. Some services round each dimension before multiplying.
- For irregular cargo, use the enclosing rectangular dimensions unless the carrier approves another method.
Common CBM Calculation Mistakes
Forgetting unit conversion
Multiplying centimeter values gives cubic centimeters, not cubic meters. Divide by 1,000,000 before labeling the result as CBM.
Using product dimensions
Freight occupies the packed outside dimensions. Protective material and pallets often increase the shipping volume.
Assuming full container use
Nominal container volume ignores arrangement, door clearance, pallets, bracing and weight distribution.
Ignoring quantity
A correct per-carton CBM still understates the shipment if it is not multiplied by every identical package.
Confusing CBM with weight
CBM measures space. Kilograms and pounds measure mass. A carrier pricing rule connects them for billing.
Using an unverified divisor
Dimensional divisors change by carrier, service, route and contract. Check the current tariff before quoting a landed cost.

Does shipment weight change CBM?
No. CBM comes from dimensions and quantity. Actual weight does not change physical volume, but it can affect freight pricing, container payload and the final chargeable-weight calculation.
