What Is a SIP Calculator?

A SIP calculator estimates the future value of regular investments made through a Systematic Investment Plan. You provide a monthly amount, assumed annual return and investment period. The tool compounds each instalment for the time it remains invested and adds the results.

A SIP is an investment method, not a separate asset class or a return-guaranteed product. The Association of Mutual Funds in India describes a SIP as investing a fixed amount in a mutual fund scheme at regular intervals instead of investing the full amount at once. Your result still depends on the selected scheme, market performance, costs, taxes and your ability to continue investing.

This calculator is designed for planning. It answers questions such as: “What might ₹5,000 per month become in 10 years?” and “How much difference would a 10% annual step-up make?” It does not identify a fund, predict its return or judge whether the investment matches your risk profile.

How to Use This SIP Calculator

  1. Enter the amount you plan to invest every month.
  2. Add an expected annual return. Test more than one rate instead of treating one figure as certain.
  3. Select the number of complete years you plan to stay invested.
  4. Enter an annual step-up if you expect to increase the SIP as your income grows. Keep it at 0% for a fixed SIP.
  5. Add an inflation assumption to view the projected corpus in today's purchasing power.
  6. Choose whether the instalment is invested at the start or end of each month, then select Calculate SIP.

Review the future value together with total invested and estimated returns. A large corpus does not automatically mean strong real growth. The inflation-adjusted result gives extra context about what the future amount may buy.

SIP Calculation Formula

For a fixed monthly contribution made at the start of every month, the calculator uses the future value of an annuity due:

FV = P × [((1 + i)n − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i)

  • FV is the estimated future value.
  • P is the monthly SIP amount.
  • i is the assumed annual return divided by 12.
  • n is the total number of monthly instalments.

For an end-of-month SIP, the final “× (1 + i)” factor is removed. If the return is 0%, the result equals total contributions. When a step-up is entered, the tool uses a month-by-month projection and increases the instalment after every 12 months.

Worked Example

Suppose you invest ₹5,000 at the start of each month for 10 years and assume a 12% annual return. The monthly rate is 1%, and the plan has 120 instalments.

  • Total invested: ₹5,000 × 120 = ₹6,00,000
  • Estimated future value: about ₹11,61,695
  • Estimated returns: about ₹5,61,695
  • Inflation-adjusted value at 6% inflation: about ₹6,48,685 in today's money

The calculation assumes a smooth 12% return. Real markets do not grow in a straight line. A fund may gain in one period and lose in another, so your actual outcome will differ.

How Return Assumptions Change the Result

The expected return has a large effect over long periods. This comparison uses a fixed ₹5,000 monthly SIP, 10 years and start-of-month contributions. It excludes fees and taxes.

Fixed SIP vs Step-Up SIP

A fixed SIP keeps the instalment unchanged. A step-up SIP increases it periodically, usually once a year. A step-up may help your contribution keep pace with income or inflation, but only if the higher future instalment fits your budget.

This calculator raises the monthly amount at the start of each new investment year. For example, a ₹5,000 SIP with a 10% step-up becomes ₹5,500 per month in year two and ₹6,050 per month in year three.

Why Inflation-Adjusted Value Matters

A future corpus is a nominal amount. Inflation reduces its purchasing power. The calculator divides the future corpus by (1 + inflation)years to show an approximate value in today's money.

For example, ₹20 lakh received 15 years from now will not buy what ₹20 lakh buys today. At 6% annual inflation, its approximate present purchasing power is about ₹8.35 lakh. This does not mean your account balance falls to ₹8.35 lakh. It expresses the future balance in today's rupees for planning.

Inflation varies across time and spending categories. Education, healthcare, housing and travel costs may rise at different rates. Use an assumption relevant to your goal and test a higher rate for essential long-term expenses.

  • Fund risk differs across equity, debt, hybrid and other categories.

SIP and lump sum describe how money enters an investment. A SIP spreads contributions across dates. A lump sum invests a larger amount at one time. Neither method is automatically better in every situation.

Your time horizon, emergency fund, debt, risk capacity, asset allocation and goal matter more than the label. Avoid investing money you expect to need soon in a volatile asset solely because a calculator shows a high long-term corpus.

What This Calculator Does Not Include

The estimate does not model a specific scheme's daily NAV, market volatility, dividend distributions, expense ratio, exit load, stamp duty, capital-gains tax, brokerage, advisory fee or skipped instalments. It also assumes the entered return and inflation rates remain constant.

Tax treatment depends on the fund type, holding period, transaction history and rules in force when units are redeemed. Do not use the gross projected value as a post-tax target. For an important goal, add a margin of safety and review your plan periodically.

Can a SIP cause a loss?

Yes. Regular investing reduces reliance on one purchase date, but it does not remove market, credit, interest-rate or scheme-specific risk.
