Education Loan EMI Calculator
Estimate EMI after the course moratorium, compare capitalized and serviced interest, model optional interest support, and review the full repayment schedule.
Last Updated: July 23, 2026
An education loan can grow before the first EMI is due. This calculator separates course and grace periods from regular repayment, then shows how interest treatment, optional support and extra payments change the opening balance, EMI, total cost and payoff date. Use the terms in your sanction letter for a lender-specific estimate.
Calculate Education Loan Repayment
The entered support rate is a scenario input, not an eligibility decision. All amounts are shown in Indian rupees and the regular EMI uses a monthly reducing-balance method.
Unpaid moratorium interest increases the repayment balance
The 48-month moratorium adds an estimated ₹6,00,000 before repayment, producing a modeled opening balance of ₹21,00,000.
- Unpaid moratorium interest is added to the opening repayment balance.
- Eligibility for any subsidy, guarantee or tax deduction is not determined here.
Moratorium Treatment Comparison
| Scenario | Opening balance | EMI | Paid in moratorium | Borrower interest | Total outflow |

Comparison rows exclude optional extra monthly payments so that moratorium treatment is isolated. The entered processing fee and other loan costs are included.

How to Use This Education Loan EMI Calculator
- Enter the amount actually borrowed. If the lender disburses the loan in stages, using the full sanctioned amount from day one may overstate early interest; use the lender's disbursement schedule for a precise result.
- Enter the annual interest rate in your sanction letter. The default 10% is only a worked example, not a current market quote.
- Split the moratorium into course months and the grace period after the course. Many Indian model-scheme loans use course period plus one year, but your contract controls.
- Choose simple interest or monthly compounding for moratorium accrual. Then choose whether the borrower pays that interest during the moratorium or allows it to be capitalized.
- Leave modeled support at 0 unless you want to test a verified subsidy or subvention. Enter the annual percentage-point support and the principal cap stated by the applicable scheme.
- Add processing and other known loan costs, repayment tenure, expected first EMI date, and any voluntary extra monthly payment.
- Enter expected take-home income and other debt only for the planning ratio. It is not a bank eligibility, FOIR or underwriting decision.
Review the EMI, moratorium comparison, yearly totals and monthly schedule. The most useful comparison is often not the lowest EMI, but the combination of manageable payments and the lowest realistic lifetime cost.
Education Loan EMI Formula
Once regular repayment starts, the calculator uses the standard monthly reducing-balance EMI formula:
- P is the repayment opening balance after the entered moratorium treatment.
- r is the annual interest rate divided by 12 and then by 100.
- n is the number of scheduled monthly repayments.
At a 0% rate, EMI is simply principal divided by the number of months. With positive interest, the interest component is larger near the beginning because the outstanding balance is larger.
Moratorium interest formulas
For a simple-interest scenario, gross moratorium interest is:
For monthly compounding, the calculator uses the monthly compound-growth formula. Support is modeled as a rate reduction only on the entered eligible principal cap. The actual bank or government calculation may use disbursement dates, daily interest, claim periods or rounding rules that this planning model cannot reproduce.
Worked example
Assume a ₹15,00,000 education loan at 10% a year, a three-year course, a one-year grace period, simple interest during moratorium, and a 10-year repayment term. If the borrower pays no interest before regular EMI:
- Moratorium: 48 months
- Gross moratorium interest: ₹6,00,000
- Opening repayment balance after capitalization: ₹21,00,000
- Scheduled EMI: about ₹27,752
- Repayment-stage interest: about ₹12,30,199
- Total borrower interest including moratorium: about ₹18,30,199
If the same ₹6,00,000 is serviced during the moratorium, the repayment principal remains ₹15,00,000 and the EMI falls to about ₹19,823. Total interest is also lower because the moratorium interest is not financed for another ten years.
Capitalized Interest vs Paying Interest During Moratorium
| Approach | Cash needed while studying | Opening repayment balance | EMI effect | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Capitalize unpaid interest | Lower immediate cash requirement | Original principal plus borrower moratorium interest | Higher | Interest is effectively financed and can increase lifetime cost materially |
| Service interest during moratorium | Regular interest payments are needed | Usually closer to original principal | Lower | Reduces later EMI and avoids paying repayment-stage interest on capitalized interest |
| Eligible interest support | Depends on scheme and claim processing | Can reduce borrower-accrued interest | Potentially lower | Eligibility, eligible principal, institution, income and other conditions must be verified |
Current India Education Loan Rules and Support
Loan contracts and government schemes serve different purposes. A credit guarantee protects part of the lender's covered default; it does not erase the student's repayment obligation. Interest subvention may reduce qualifying moratorium interest, but it is not automatically available to every borrower.
PM-Vidyalaxmi
Under the current central scheme, eligible students admitted to qualifying higher education institutions can access a digital education-loan process. Students with annual family income up to ₹8 lakh may be eligible for 3 percentage points of interest subvention during the moratorium on loans up to ₹10 lakh, subject to the scheme's institution, income, beneficiary-allocation and no-other-support conditions. Loans up to ₹7.5 lakh can receive a 75% government credit guarantee for the lender. These are scheme limits, not calculator defaults or promises of approval.
PM-USP Central Sector Interest Subsidy
PM-USP CSIS can provide full moratorium-period interest support on eligible education loans up to ₹10 lakh for students with annual parental or family income up to ₹4.5 lakh pursuing approved technical or professional courses at approved institutions. Eligibility documentation and the lender's claim process matter. The calculator can model the financial effect, but it cannot establish qualification.
Moratorium and repayment term
The IBA model framework commonly cited by the Ministry of Education uses a repayment holiday of the course period plus one year and a repayment period of up to 15 years after the moratorium. Individual bank products can differ, and restructuring, employment-linked relief or stepped payments require written lender approval. Enter the actual dates and term from your sanction letter rather than assuming the model maximum applies.
Education Loan Interest Deduction in Tax Year 2026-27
India's Income-tax Act, 2025 is effective for tax year 2026-27. Section 129 covers interest paid on an eligible higher-education loan and corresponds to the former Section 80E of the 1961 Act. It allows an individual to deduct qualifying interest actually paid from taxable income for the initial tax year in which interest payment begins and the next seven tax years, or until the interest is fully paid, whichever is earlier.
- The deduction is for qualifying interest paid, not principal repayment.
- The loan must be from a covered financial institution or approved charitable institution.
- Higher education can be for the individual, spouse, child, or a student for whom the individual is legal guardian.
- Section 129 has no separate rupee cap in the provision, but the deduction cannot exceed qualifying interest actually paid and remains subject to taxable-income and documentation rules.
- The default new tax regime under Section 202 excludes most Chapter VIII deductions, including Section 129. The deduction is therefore relevant when the taxpayer validly uses the normal or old regime and meets all conditions.
This calculator does not estimate tax savings because the benefit depends on who pays the interest, the tax regime, taxable income, marginal rate and the eight-year window. Keep the lender's annual interest certificate and verify the current return form requirements.
How to Reduce Education Loan Cost
- Borrow against dated costs, not the sanction ceiling. A staged loan aligned with semester fees can reduce the balance accruing interest early.
- Service some interest if affordable. Even partial payments during the course can reduce the amount capitalized later.
- Verify support before budgeting it. Treat subsidy as zero until the institution, lender and scheme administrator confirm eligibility and process.
- Compare spread and reset terms. A floating rate can change before and during repayment; compare the benchmark, spread, reset frequency and concessions.
- Use extra payments deliberately. Once income stabilizes, a regular extra amount can shorten tenure and reduce repayment-stage interest. Confirm that payments are applied to principal without an unexpected charge.
- Keep an emergency reserve. Aggressive prepayment should not leave a new graduate unable to cover rent, relocation, insurance or a job-search period.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does interest accrue during an education loan moratorium?
Usually yes, unless a qualifying scheme or lender concession covers it. The lender may use simple interest, daily accrual, monthly compounding or another stated method. Check the sanction letter.
What happens if moratorium interest is not paid?
If the contract permits capitalization, unpaid borrower interest is added to the balance when repayment starts. EMI and lifetime interest can then rise because the larger balance is repaid over the selected term.
What moratorium period should I enter?
Enter the course period plus the exact repayment holiday in the loan terms. Course period plus one year is common in the IBA model framework, but the actual contract can differ.
Does PM-Vidyalaxmi make every education loan interest-free?
No. It has specific institution, income and other conditions. Current 3-percentage-point support applies only to eligible cases and an eligible loan amount, while PM-USP CSIS has separate full-support conditions.
Can I claim the entire EMI as a tax deduction?
No. Section 129 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 concerns qualifying interest actually paid, not principal. It is also unavailable under the default new tax regime and remains subject to the statutory conditions.
Why may the bank EMI differ from this result?
Differences can come from staged disbursements, daily interest, capitalization dates, rate resets, rounding, broken periods, fees, subsidy claims or a first-payment date different from the modeled monthly cycle.
Is paying interest during the course always better?
It normally reduces later EMI and total cost, but only if the payment is affordable without sacrificing essential expenses or using higher-cost debt. Compare both scenarios before choosing.
