What Is a Mutual Fund Returns Calculator?
A mutual fund returns calculator projects how an investment might grow when you provide a starting amount, monthly contribution, expected return and time horizon. This page supports a lump sum, a fixed monthly SIP or a combination of both. It separates your contributions from estimated growth and then shows the possible effect of expenses, exit load, tax and inflation.
A mutual fund pools money from investors and buys assets according to a stated scheme objective. Investors receive units at the applicable net asset value, or NAV. Returns can come from changes in NAV and distributions. The result depends on the fund category, portfolio, market conditions, fees, tax treatment and the dates on which money enters or leaves the scheme.
This calculator is a planning model. It does not retrieve a scheme's live or historical NAV, rate a fund, select an asset allocation or forecast future performance. The AMFI mutual fund risk guidance states that mutual funds are not guaranteed or assured-return products and that the value may rise or fall.
How to Use This Mutual Fund Calculator
- Enter your current or planned lump-sum investment. Keep it at ₹0 when you only want to model a SIP.
- Enter a fixed monthly SIP. Keep it at ₹0 for a pure lump-sum projection. At least one investment amount must be above zero.
- Add an expected annual return before expenses. Test a conservative rate instead of relying on a single high assumption.
- Enter the scheme's annual expense ratio. If the return you entered already reflects expenses, set this field to 0% to avoid deducting the cost twice.
- Select the investment period, inflation assumption, applicable exit load and monthly contribution timing.
- Keep the tax option selected only when the simplified Indian equity-oriented fund rules match your use case. Then select Calculate Returns.
Read the net redemption value together with total invested, deductions and today's-value estimate. The conservative and optimistic columns use return assumptions two percentage points below and above your base rate. They are sensitivity tests, not a best-case and worst-case forecast.
Mutual Fund Return Formula
For a single lump sum, the base future-value formula is:
FV = P × (1 + r)t
- FV is the estimated value before exit load and tax.
- P is the starting lump sum.
- r is the annual return after subtracting the entered expense ratio.
- t is the investment period in years.
For monthly investments, the calculator compounds each instalment for the number of months it remains invested. A start-of-month contribution receives one more month of modeled growth than an end-of-month contribution. The calculation uses an effective monthly rate of (1 + annual net return)1/12 − 1 rather than dividing the annual rate by 12.
Worked Example
Suppose you invest ₹1,00,000 for 10 years, expect a 12% annual return before expenses, enter a 0.5% expense ratio and assume 6% inflation. There is no monthly SIP or exit load. The modeled annual return after expenses is 11.5%.

The model produces smooth compounding because the same return is applied throughout the period. A real scheme's annual and monthly returns will be uneven. The final amount may be higher or lower, including below the amount invested.
Gross Return, Expense Ratio and Net Return
The expense ratio represents annual operating expenses charged to a scheme's assets. It is reflected in the NAV and reduces the return available to investors. This calculator treats your expected return as a before-expense assumption and subtracts the entered expense ratio to create an approximate net annual growth rate.
For example, a 12% before-expense return and a 0.5% expense ratio produce an 11.5% modeled rate. The result card called “expense-ratio impact” compares the projected value at the entered expense ratio with a 0% expense-ratio version of the same return assumption. It does not predict the scheme's actual rupee expense.
Use care with historical returns. Published scheme NAV performance generally already reflects the scheme's expenses. If you enter an after-expense historical CAGR and also enter the expense ratio, the tool will deduct the cost twice. In that case, use 0% in the expense field. How the Equity-Fund Tax Estimate Works
The optional tax calculation applies a simplified Indian equity-oriented mutual fund model. Each lump sum or monthly SIP instalment is treated as a separate purchase lot. At the assumed final redemption date, positive gains on lots held for more than 12 months enter the long-term bucket. Positive gains on newer lots enter the short-term bucket.
- Eligible long-term gains above the modeled ₹1,25,000 exemption are taxed at 12.5%.
- Eligible short-term gains are taxed at 20%.
- The entered exit load reduces modeled redemption proceeds before lot-level gains are estimated.
- Loss-making lots do not produce negative tax in this calculator.
The rates and exemption match the current official provisions referenced by the Income Tax Department's Section 112A guidance. The estimate excludes surcharge, cess, STT, loss set-off, grandfathering, other capital gains, exemptions already used elsewhere and transaction-specific rules. It is not suitable for debt funds, international funds, gold funds, fund-of-funds or other categories with different tax treatment.
Exit Load and Redemption Value
An exit load is a charge applied when units are redeemed within a scheme-defined period. The rate and holding rule vary by scheme and purchase lot. Some schemes have no exit load. Others charge it only on units redeemed before a stated holding period.
This tool applies the entered exit-load percentage to the full projected value. That creates a simple estimate, but it may overstate the charge when only recent SIP instalments fall inside the scheme's exit-load window. Lump Sum vs SIP Investment
Lump sum and SIP describe the timing of contributions, not the quality of a mutual fund. A lump sum places more money in the market at one time. A SIP spreads purchases across dates and market levels. The right approach depends on when the money is available, your goal, risk capacity and ability to continue the plan.

Rupee-cost averaging through a SIP does not guarantee profit or prevent loss. Likewise, a lump sum does not guarantee a better long-term result. Avoid investing emergency money or near-term goal funds in a volatile scheme because a calculator displays a large future value.
Why Inflation-Adjusted Returns Matter
The projected account value is a future nominal amount. Inflation reduces what that amount will buy. The calculator divides the estimated net redemption value by (1 + inflation)years to express it in today's purchasing power.
For example, ₹10 lakh received after 15 years has an approximate present value of ₹4.17 lakh at 6% inflation. Your future account would still show ₹10 lakh. The lower number answers a different question: what might those future rupees buy compared with money today?
Inflation varies by period and spending category. Education, healthcare and housing costs may not follow the general inflation rate. Test more than one assumption and leave a margin of safety when the investment supports an essential goal.
How to Build More Realistic Return Scenarios
- Match the expected return to the fund category. Equity, debt, hybrid and international funds carry different risks.
- Review returns across several market cycles, not only the latest one-year performance.
- Compare the scheme with its benchmark and category, while remembering that past performance does not promise future returns.
- Check the current Riskometer, portfolio concentration, credit quality, duration and scheme documents.
- Include expenses, possible exit load, taxes and inflation instead of focusing only on the gross corpus.
- Recalculate when your contribution, goal date, scheme costs or tax situation changes.
The scenario table changes the return by two percentage points in each direction. It does not model volatility or sequence-of-return risk. Two investments with the same average return can finish with different values when cash flows occur on different dates.
What This Calculator Includes and Excludes
The calculator includes a starting lump sum, fixed monthly SIP, contribution timing, return after an entered expense ratio, inflation, a flat exit load, simplified equity-fund capital-gains tax and year-wise return scenarios. It handles a 0% return and negative return assumptions within the input range.
It does not use actual NAV history, model daily volatility, dividends, skipped SIPs, step-ups, switches, withdrawals, stamp duty, advisory fees, brokerage, cess, surcharge, STT, tax-loss set-off or category-specific tax rules. It assumes all units are redeemed at the end of the selected period. Verify important estimates with current scheme records and qualified tax or financial guidance.
