What Is an EMI Calculator?

An EMI calculator estimates the equal monthly instalment needed to repay a loan over a chosen tenure at a stated annual interest rate. Each instalment contains interest on the outstanding balance and a principal portion. Early in a reducing-balance schedule, interest generally forms a larger share; the principal share usually increases as the balance falls.

This India-focused hub formats amounts in rupees and supports common home, car, personal, education, business, two-wheeler and gold-loan scenarios. It is a planning tool—not a lender quotation, eligibility decision, APR disclosure or repayment statement.

EMI Formula and Worked Example

For monthly reducing-balance interest and a fully amortising loan, the calculator uses:

EMI = P x r x (1 + r)^n / [(1 + r)^n - 1]

P is principal, r is the nominal annual rate divided by 12 and 100, and n is the number of monthly instalments. At 0% interest, EMI = P / n.

For ₹10,00,000 at 9% per year over five years, r is 0.0075 and n is 60. The estimated EMI is ₹20,758.36. Across all 60 instalments, modeled interest is ₹2,45,501.31 and total repayment is ₹12,45,501.31. The first EMI contains about ₹7,500 interest and ₹13,258.36 principal.

How Amount, Interest Rate and Tenure Affect EMI

Loan amount

A larger principal increases EMI and total interest when rate and tenure stay unchanged. A larger down payment can reduce the amount financed.

Interest rate

A higher rate allocates more of each instalment to interest and normally raises both EMI and total borrowing cost.

Loan tenure

A longer tenure can reduce monthly EMI but usually increases total interest. A shorter tenure raises EMI and often lowers total cost.

The comparison table is a sensitivity check, not a prediction. It shows what the same principal and tenure would look like at a rate 0.50 percentage point lower or higher. Actual offers depend on lender policy, borrower profile, collateral and market conditions.

Reducing-Balance vs Flat-Rate Interest

In a reducing-balance loan, interest is calculated on the outstanding principal, so the interest amount generally falls as repayment progresses. In a flat-rate quotation, interest may be calculated on the original principal for the full tenure even though the balance is being repaid. A flat percentage can therefore look lower while producing a higher effective cost.

This calculator models reducing-balance EMI only. If an advertisement uses a flat rate, ask the lender for the APR, total repayment and amortisation schedule in the KFS before comparing it with a reducing-balance offer.

Interest Rate, APR and KFS Are Different

The interest-rate input drives this EMI calculation. APR is a broader annualised cost measure that includes interest and applicable associated charges. RBI's Key Facts Statement framework requires covered retail and MSME term loans to disclose APR computation and an amortisation schedule, with eligible third-party charges recovered through the lender shown separately.

Fixed and Floating-Rate EMI

A fixed-rate calculation assumes the rate does not change. A floating-rate loan is linked to a benchmark and can reset during the tenure, which may change EMI, tenure or both. This calculator holds the entered rate constant, so it does not forecast future benchmark movements.

RBI directions for EMI-based floating-rate personal loans require lenders to communicate the possible impact of rate resets and provide specified choices when rates reset. The exact options and any fixed-rate conversion depend on the applicable directions and lender policy; do not assume every lender must offer a fixed-rate switch.

What This EMI Estimate Does Not Include

  • advance EMI, down payment, security deposit or net disbursal differences;
  • daily-interest conventions, broken-period interest or lender-specific rounding;
  • moratoriums, payment holidays, interest-only periods, balloon or bullet payments;
  • future floating-rate changes, negative amortisation or tenure caps;
  • late fees, penal charges, prepayment charges or taxes.

Eligible floating-rate individual non-business loans sanctioned or renewed on or after January 1, 2026 cannot carry prepayment charges under RBI's 2025 directions. Fixed-rate loans, older agreements and other uncovered loans may follow different disclosed terms, so check the sanction letter, agreement and KFS.
