Calculate your CGPA
Enter results from one consistent institutional scale. Credit-weighted mode is the standard choice when semesters carry different credit totals.
CGPA result
≈ 8.41 / 10 CGPA
Three included terms, rounded to 2 decimal places
Calculation steps
- Multiply each included term result by its credits or units.
- Add the weighted points: 504.8.
- Divide by 60 total credits or units to get ≈ 8.41.
This estimate uses the visible term results and credit weights. Check the official scale, included credits, repeat rules, and reporting precision.

How to Use This CGPA Calculator
- Choose the method. Select credit-weighted terms, equal terms, or official cumulative totals.
- Enter the institutional scale. Use the maximum shown in your regulations or transcript, such as 10, 7, 5, or 4.
- Add each included term. Enter its SGPA or GPA and its total GPA credits or units when using credit weighting.
- Exclude only complete terms when required. Clear Use for a term the official calculation omits; the calculator does not infer exclusions.
- Match the display policy. Choose two, three, or four decimals and the required rounding or truncation rule.
- Calculate and review. Check the numerator, denominator, simple-average comparison, and every breakdown row.
- Verify the estimate. Compare it with your registrar, programme handbook, or official transcript before using it for a decision.
CGPA Formula
Let Si be the SGPA or GPA for term i, and let Ci be that term’s counted credits or units. The credit-weighted formula is:
For each term, multiply the term result by its credit total. Add those products to form the numerator. Add the same term credits to form the denominator. Divide once at the end. A 24-credit term therefore affects CGPA more than a 16-credit term.
If your institution explicitly gives every term equal influence, use:
Official totals mode uses total quality or credit points divided by total GPA credits. This can be more faithful than rebuilding CGPA from term SGPAs that were already rounded.
Worked CGPA Example
Assume three semesters use the same 10-point scale but carry different credit totals.
| Term | SGPA | Credits | SGPA × credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | 8.2 | 20 | 164 |
| Semester 2 | 8.6 | 24 | 206.4 |
| Semester 3 | 8.4 | 16 | 134.4 |
Total weighted points equal 504.8 and total credits equal 60. The exact quotient is 504.8 ÷ 60 = 8.413333…, so the displayed result is approximately 8.41 on a 10-point scale when rounded half up to two decimal places.
The simple average is (8.2 + 8.6 + 8.4) ÷ 3 = 8.40. It differs from 8.41 because Semester 2 has the highest SGPA and the largest credit weight.
CGPA, SGPA, and GPA
| Measure | Typical scope | Inputs | Main use |
|---|---|---|---|
| SGPA | One semester or term | Course grade points and course credits | Term performance |
| CGPA | All included terms | Term results and term credits, or cumulative totals | Programme-wide performance |
| GPA | Depends on the institution | Courses, terms, or cumulative records | General grade-point average label |
Names alone do not define the formula. Some institutions use GPA for a term and cumulative GPA for the whole record. Others use SGPA and CGPA. Follow the definitions printed in the applicable academic regulations.
Choose the Correct Calculation Method
Credit-weighted term method
Use this when you have each term’s SGPA or GPA and its counted credit total. The University Grants Commission framework gives this method as CGPA = Σ(term credits × term SGPA) ÷ Σ(term credits). Credit labels can differ, but every row must use a compatible unit basis.
Equal-term method
Use a direct average only when every included term has equal weight or the institution explicitly says to average term results. Entering weight 1 for all terms is not a substitute for missing credits when term loads differ.
Official cumulative totals
Use this when the transcript gives cumulative quality points and matching GPA credits or units. The formula is total points ÷ total GPA credits. Do not use total earned credits if pass, transfer, audit, or other credits are excluded from the GPA denominator.
Institutional Scales and Compatible Units
The scale input is a validation ceiling. Choosing 10 instead of 4 does not normalize, rescale, or convert any term result. Every included SGPA must already belong to the entered scale.
- Do not mix a 4-point GPA with a 10-point SGPA.
- Do not combine semester credits and quarter credits without an official common basis.
- Do not mix weighted and unweighted term figures.
- Use GPA credits or units, not every credit earned toward the degree.
- Use one institution’s rule set unless an official evaluator tells you how to combine records.
A scale maximum does not reveal class, division, admission eligibility, or academic standing. Those thresholds remain programme-specific.
CGPA to Percentage Is Not Universal
This calculator intentionally does not convert CGPA to a percentage. A multiplier such as 9.5, 10, or another number is not valid for every university, programme, or academic year.
Published institutional rules demonstrate why the conversion is specific. Delhi University’s UGCF 2022 guidance uses CGPA × 10 within that framework, while the cited IIT Madras M.Sc. rules use 55 + 10(CGPA − 6) for the stated programme. Use only the formula or table issued for your exact record.
Failed, Repeated, Transfer, and Non-GPA Work
A term SGPA should already reflect course-level rules. This calculator does not reopen those courses or decide whether a failed, repeated, withdrawn, pass/fail, audit, remedial, transfer, substituted, or incomplete course belongs in the term result.
Do not remove a whole term merely because it contains one unusual course. Exclude a term row only when the official cumulative calculation omits that entire term or record. Repeat and grade-forgiveness rules vary, so a matching term or course name is not enough to infer replacement.
If official cumulative quality points and GPA credits are available after these policies were applied, direct totals mode is the strongest input path.
Rounding, Truncation, and Published SGPAs
The calculator stores entered decimals and fractions as exact rational values. It multiplies and sums without floating-point drift, divides once, then applies the selected display rule to the final result.
Reporting rules differ. One UGC framework reports two decimal places, while separate UGC evaluation guidance calls for up to three decimal places. The University of Illinois provides an example of transcript GPA truncation rather than rounding. Select the rule that applies to your record.
Even exact calculator arithmetic cannot recover digits already removed from a published SGPA. A CGPA rebuilt from rounded term values may differ slightly from a registrar result calculated from underlying course totals.
Common CGPA Calculation Mistakes
- Taking a simple average when semesters carry unequal GPA credits.
- Multiplying by total earned credits instead of counted GPA credits.
- Mixing 4-point, 7-point, 10-point, percentage, weighted, or unweighted records.
- Rounding each weighted product before adding the numerator.
- Treating an already cumulative CGPA as one ordinary semester.
- Applying a universal percentage multiplier.
- Guessing how repeats, failures, transfers, or pass/fail work are handled.
- Assuming an online estimate overrides the official transcript.

CGPA Calculator FAQs
How do I calculate CGPA from semester SGPA?
Multiply each included SGPA by that semester’s GPA credits or units, add the products, and divide by the total included credits or units. Use equal-term mode only when every term has equal weight or the official rule requires it.
Should I add SGPAs and divide by the number of semesters?
Only for equal-weight terms or an explicit institutional method. When credit totals differ, use the credit-weighted formula because a larger term should contribute more.
What credits should I enter?
Enter the GPA credits, credit hours, or units counted in each term’s result. Do not substitute total earned credits when the institution excludes transfer, pass/fail, audit, or other work from GPA.
What does official cumulative totals mode calculate?
It divides the cumulative quality or credit-point numerator by the matching GPA-credit or unit denominator. It is useful when both totals appear on the same official record.
Which CGPA scale should I choose?
Enter the maximum used by your institution, such as 10, 7, 5, or 4. The scale validates entries but does not convert values from another scale.
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA normally measures one semester. CGPA combines all included semesters or cumulative course totals across the programme. Exact definitions still depend on institutional regulations.
Can I convert CGPA to percentage by multiplying by 9.5?
Not universally. Use only the conversion formula or equivalence table issued for your institution, programme, and academic regulation. This calculator does not assume a percentage formula.
How are failed, repeated, or incomplete courses handled?
The entered term result should already reflect the official course rules. The calculator does not infer replacement, forgiveness, exclusion, or pass/fail treatment from term names.
Why does my calculated CGPA differ from my transcript?
Possible causes include rounded SGPAs, different credit totals, excluded courses, repeat rules, mixed records, or another reporting rule. Official cumulative totals often provide a closer calculation.
Is this CGPA result official?
No. It is an estimate based on your entries and selected method. Your registrar, university regulations, and official transcript determine the recognized CGPA.
