Tola uses the conventional 180-troy-grain basis: 1 tola = 11.6638038 grams = 0.375 troy ounce.

This calculator converts mass only. It does not determine gold purity, value, making charges, assay results or live prices.

Reviewed on 15 July 2026 using NIST Handbook 44 troy and metric mass tables and World Gold Council gold-weight information.

Gold is commonly weighed in metric units and troy units. This converter uses grams as the internal bridge, allowing direct conversion among grams, kilograms, troy ounces, conventional tola, pennyweight and grains without involving purity or price.

Quick answer: Enter the weight, choose the starting and target units, and select Convert. The complete results panel also shows every other supported gold-weight equivalent.

How the Gold Weight Converter Works

The calculator first multiplies the entered amount by its gram conversion factor. It then divides the gram amount by the target unit's factor. The original value is retained internally at full JavaScript precision before display rounding.

Weight in grams = entered weight × source-unit gram factor
Converted weight = weight in grams ÷ target-unit gram factor

For example, 10 grams divided by 11.6638038 grams per tola equals approximately 0.8573509788 tola.

NIST's 2026 mass tables give one grain as 64.79891 milligrams, one pennyweight as 1.55517384 grams and one troy ounce as 31.1034768 grams. A kilogram is exactly 1,000 grams.

Gram to Tola Gold Conversion

This page uses one conventional tola as 180 troy grains. Multiplying 180 by 0.06479891 gram per grain gives 11.6638038 grams. Therefore:

Tola = grams ÷ 11.6638038
  • 1 gram = approximately 0.0857350979 tola
  • 10 grams = approximately 0.8573509788 tola
  • 100 grams = approximately 8.573509788 tola
  • 1 tola = 11.6638038 grams
  • 10 tola = 116.638038 grams
Check the seller's unit: some retail listings may loosely use “tola” for a 10-gram product. This converter does not. It uses the conventional 11.6638038-gram tola; select grams when the product is explicitly 10 g.

Troy Ounce vs Regular Ounce

Precious metals are generally quoted in troy ounces. One troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. A standard avoirdupois ounce used for many everyday goods is 28.349523125 grams, so substituting an ordinary ounce creates a material error. Every “ounce” option on this page is explicitly a troy ounce.

Troy Ounce, Pennyweight and Grain

The troy system has simple internal relationships:

  • 24 grains = 1 pennyweight
  • 20 pennyweights = 1 troy ounce
  • 480 grains = 1 troy ounce
  • 1 conventional tola = 180 grains = 7.5 pennyweights = 0.375 troy ounce

Because these relationships share the troy grain, converting through grams and converting directly within the troy system produce the same result apart from display rounding.

Worked Gold Weight Examples

1 troy ounce to grams1 × 31.1034768 = 31.1034768 grams.
1 tola to troy ounces180 ÷ 480 = 0.375 troy ounce.
5 pennyweight to grams5 × 1.55517384 = 7.7758692 grams.
1 kilogram to troy ounces1,000 ÷ 31.1034768 ≈ 32.15074657 ozt.

Use Net Gold Weight for Valuation

This converter changes units only. If you later calculate gold value, use the correct eligible metal weight. Gemstones, enamel, watch movements, steel springs, packaging and other non-gold components may be included in gross weight but should not automatically be valued as gold.

Purity is a separate measurement. Ten grams of 18K alloy and ten grams of 24K / 999 material have the same total mass but different fine-gold content.

Precision and Display Rounding

Results display up to ten decimal places where useful, while calculations use the unrounded value. Extremely small or large results may appear in scientific notation. A physical scale's resolution and calibration usually limit real-world accuracy more than the displayed decimal places.

One troy ounce equals 31.1034768 grams. This is different from the 28.349523125-gram avoirdupois ounce used for many everyday goods.
How many grams are in one tola of gold?
This calculator uses the conventional 180-troy-grain tola, equal to 11.6638038 grams.
How many tola are in 10 grams of gold?
Ten grams divided by 11.6638038 equals approximately 0.8573509788 tola.
How many troy ounces are in one kilogram of gold?
One kilogram divided by 31.1034768 grams per troy ounce equals approximately 32.15074657 troy ounces.
What is pennyweight in gold measurement?
Pennyweight, abbreviated dwt, is a troy unit. One pennyweight equals 24 grains or 1.55517384 grams, and 20 pennyweights equal one troy ounce.
How many grains are in a troy ounce?
One troy ounce contains exactly 480 grains. One grain equals 0.06479891 gram.
Is a gold ounce the same as a regular ounce?
Usually no. Gold and other precious metals commonly use the 31.1034768-gram troy ounce, while a regular avoirdupois ounce is 28.349523125 grams.
Does this converter calculate gold purity?
No. It converts total mass only. Use the Gold Purity Calculator or Gold Karat Calculator when you need fine-gold content.
Can I use this converter for silver or platinum?
The mass conversions also work mathematically for other materials. The page is labeled for gold because its examples and related tools focus on gold measurement.
Why does my jeweler's converted weight differ?
Check the unit definition, scale precision, rounding and whether the quoted weight is gross or net. Confirm especially whether “ounce” means troy ounce and whether “tola” means 11.6638038 grams or a differently labeled retail product.
