Height Difference Formula

Put both heights in the same unit, subtract one from the other, then take the absolute value. The absolute difference does not depend on input order.

Height difference = |Height 2 − Height 1|

The signed comparison keeps the order:

  • If Δ is positive, Height 2 is taller.
  • If Δ is negative, Height 1 is taller.
  • If Δ is exactly zero, the entered heights are equal.

Normalize feet and inches

Total inches = Feet × 12 + Inches

The calculator then uses the exact international-inch relationship:

Centimeters = Total inches × 2.54 = Total inches × 127/50

Metres multiply by 5000/127 to become inches. Centimeters multiply by 50/127, and millimetres multiply by 5/127. These rational relationships prevent binary floating-point residue from changing a close comparison or an exact tie.

Worked Height Difference Examples

Example 1: 5 ft 8 in compared with 5 ft 11 in

The measurements equal 68 inches and 71 inches. Their signed difference is 71 − 68 = +3 inches, so Height 2 is taller. Three inches equal exactly 7.62 cm and 76.2 mm.

Example 2: 180 cm compared with 5 ft 11 in

Five feet eleven inches equals 71 inches, or exactly 180.34 cm. The difference from 180 cm is exactly 0.34 cm, which is 3.4 mm or 17/127 total inches. Height 2 is taller even if a low-precision display makes the two rounded heights look similar.

Example 3: 170.18 cm compared with 5 ft 7 in

Five feet seven inches equals 67 inches. Multiplying 67 by exactly 2.54 gives 170.18 cm. The normalized rational values match exactly, so neither height is taller and the difference is zero.

Example 4: Normalize 5 ft 12 in

Five feet plus 12 inches equals 72 total inches, the same as 6 ft 0 in. Comparing 5 ft 12 in with 72 in therefore returns an exact tie. The calculator accepts the nonstandard remainder and labels the normalized result.

How to Read the Comparison Result

The absolute difference answers how far apart the two measurements are. It is always zero or positive. Swapping the two heights does not change it. The signed difference keeps the order Height 2 − Height 1, so its sign identifies which entry is greater.

The comparison state comes from the exact normalized values. Display rounding happens later. A small nonzero difference never becomes an equal result merely because the chosen number of significant digits shortens its screen value. Likewise, two measurements that are exactly equal after unit conversion remain equal even if their original text looks different.

This calculator does not report a percentage difference. A percentage needs a stated baseline, such as Height 1, Height 2 or their average, and those choices answer different questions. The linear distance is the unambiguous result for this page.

Mixed Units and Feet-Inch Normalization

Height 1 and Height 2 do not need the same input format. You may compare centimeters with feet and inches, metres with total inches, or any other supported pairing. Each value first becomes an exact rational number of international inches. Only then does subtraction occur.

A conventional feet-and-inches height keeps the inch remainder below 12. The input accepts larger nonnegative inch values and carries each complete group of 12 into feet. For example, 4 ft 13 in normalizes to 5 ft 1 in, while 0 ft 72 in normalizes to 6 ft 0 in. Negative components are rejected rather than offset against a positive component.

Decimal feet are different from feet and inches. A value of 5.10 decimal feet equals 5 feet plus 0.10 foot, or 1.2 inches. It does not mean 5 ft 10 in. Select the combined feet-and-inches format when the part after the separator represents inches.

Exact Factors, Rounding and Measurement Precision

The conversion factors are exact definitions. The entered measurements usually are not exact physical quantities. Tape markings, posture, shoes, hair, flooring, instrument alignment and reading resolution can all affect a measured height.

How to Compare Standing Heights More Consistently

For a basic standing-height comparison, remove shoes, bulky headwear and hair items that obstruct the headpiece. Use firm level flooring and a flat vertical surface. Keep feet flat, legs straight and shoulders level, and look forward with the head aligned consistently. A stadiometer provides a more controlled vertical surface and movable headpiece than a wall and book.

Measure both people with the same instrument and procedure. Posture and positioning should be comparable when the difference is small. Do not silently compare standing height with infant recumbent length because they are different measurement procedures.
