Calculation Steps
How to Use the Kilometers to Miles Converter
- Enter the distance. Type a nonnegative number without a comma or unit suffix.
- Choose the source unit. Select kilometers when your starting value is in km, or international miles when it is in mi.
- Choose the target unit. Select the other unit. The tool also permits an identity check when both selections match.
- Set the precision. Choose a limit from 3 to 15 significant digits for the displayed answer.
- Convert the distance. Review the main result, both unit values, exact factor and calculation steps.
- Switch direction when needed. The button reverses the units but keeps the entered number unchanged.
Changing any field clears the old result. Select Convert Distance to calculate again. This prevents a previous answer from appearing current after you edit the input. Reset returns the calculator to 1 kilometer converted to miles. Copy Result copies the current answer and factor for use in notes or planning.
Kilometers to Miles Formula
One modern international mile equals exactly 1609.344 meters. One kilometer equals exactly 1000 meters. Dividing those definitions gives the exact rational relationship between the units.
The same calculation is often written with the rounded decimal factor 0.621371. For precise work, keep more digits or use the exact ratio 15,625/25,146 miles per kilometer. The calculator applies the exact ratio before rounding the displayed result.
Miles to Kilometers Formula
Reverse the direction by multiplying miles by the exact number of kilometers in one international mile.
The direction matters. A mile is longer than a kilometer, so the numerical value increases when you convert miles to kilometers and decreases when you convert kilometers to miles. This quick reasonableness check catches a reversed factor.
Worked Kilometer and Mile Examples
Example 1: Convert 5 kilometers to miles
Divide 5 by 1.609344, or multiply 5 by the exact ratio 15,625/25,146.
For an everyday route, 3.11 miles is often enough. The longer decimal remains useful when a later calculation needs more precision.
Example 2: Convert 10 miles to kilometers
Multiply by the exact factor 1.609344 kilometers per mile.
This decimal terminates because the input and the miles-to-kilometers factor both have finite decimal forms. It is exact as a mathematical conversion of the entered value, although a real measured route may still be rounded.
Example 3: Convert a marathon distance
A marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers converts as follows:
The familiar 26.2-mile label is a rounded description. It is not the complete converted value of 42.195 kilometers.

Kilometers-to-miles values are rounded for display. The miles-to-kilometers middle-column values are exact for the listed inputs, while the final column gives shorter rounded forms. Use the calculator when your distance is not listed or when you need a different precision.

What Kilometers and International Miles Mean
The meter is the SI base unit of length. The prefix kilo means 1000, so one kilometer equals exactly 1000 meters. The kilometer symbol is km. SI style uses a lowercase k and m, places a space between a number and the symbol, and does not add a period or plural s to the symbol. Write 12 km, not 12 kms.
This calculator uses the modern international mile, exactly 1609.344 meters. Its symbol is mi. The definition follows the international yard-and-pound agreement, under which one yard is exactly 0.9144 meter and one international mile contains 1760 yards. Therefore, 1760 × 0.9144 = 1609.344 meters per mile.
A kilometer and a mile both measure linear distance. They do not measure speed. Values such as km/h and mph include time and need a speed converter. They also do not measure area. Converting square kilometers to square miles requires squaring the linear factor.
Using the Conversion for Travel, Maps and Running
Road signs, maps, vehicle displays and fitness apps may use different distance systems. Convert the route length before comparing travel plans, training totals or odometer readings. Keep the time, fuel, pace or cost calculation separate until the distance unit is consistent across every input.
For travel estimates, two decimal places are usually readable. A 250-kilometer route is about 155.34 miles. Real driving distance may differ because map routes, detours, road closures and GPS updates change the path. The converter changes units only. It does not find or validate a route.
For running, a rounded label and an official course distance are not always identical. A 5K is 5 kilometers, about 3.106856 miles. A 10K is about 6.213712 miles. A half-marathon distance of 21.0975 kilometers is about 13.109379 miles, and a marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers is about 26.218757 miles. Keep enough digits when calculating pace or cumulative splits, then round the final display.
When comparing an odometer in miles with a service interval in kilometers, convert the interval in the correct direction. For example, 10,000 kilometers is about 6213.711922 miles. Manufacturer schedules can include time as well as distance, so follow the applicable maintenance document rather than relying on unit conversion alone.
Accuracy, Rounding and Calculator Limits
The kilometer-mile factor is exact. A displayed answer can still be rounded because many kilometers-to-miles results have repeating decimal expansions. The approximate sign shows when the selected digit count does not reproduce the exact rational result. Zero remains exactly zero. Identity conversions use the exact factor 1, although a nonzero displayed value is still rounded when it exceeds the selected precision limit.
The calculator parses complete decimal input into an exact fraction and uses integer-rational arithmetic in current browsers with BigInt support. It applies round-half-to-even only at the selected significant-digit limit. Inputs may contain up to 80 significant digits and a scientific exponent from −3000 through 3000. This wide range prevents ordinary floating-point underflow or overflow from silently turning a valid value into zero or infinity.
Choose precision based on the source. A map label of 12 km does not normally support a result such as 7.456454307 miles. Reporting 7.5 miles or 7.46 miles may better match the original value. Keep additional digits during multi-step work so early rounding does not accumulate, then round the final answer once.
This converter treats the entered number as a nonnegative distance magnitude. It rejects negative values, incomplete exponents, commas, fractions and unit text. A signed coordinate or displacement component needs a tool designed for directed quantities.
Common Kilometer and Mile Conversion Mistakes
- Multiplying in the wrong direction. Multiply miles by 1.609344. Divide kilometers by 1.609344.
- Using 1.6 for every task. It is useful for mental estimates, but repeated or technical calculations need the exact factor.
- Confusing miles with nautical miles. One international mile is 1609.344 meters. One international nautical mile is 1852 meters.
- Converting speed as distance. A value in mph or km/h includes a time unit. Convert both the distance unit and the full rate correctly.
- Applying a linear factor to area. Square kilometers and square miles require a squared factor.
- Rounding at every step. Keep the unrounded conversion for pace, fuel or cost calculations, then round the final output.
- Treating map precision as measurement precision. A conversion does not correct an estimated route, GPS error or rounded road sign.
