Exact Gallon Definitions and Rounding
The U.S. liquid gallon contains exactly 231 cubic inches. With the international inch defined as exactly 0.0254 metre, this equals exactly 3.785411784 L. The UK definition sets one Imperial gallon at exactly 4.54609 cubic decimetres, which is exactly 4.54609 L.
The calculator stores an entered decimal as a fraction, applies the selected exact definition, reduces the result, and rounds only the final display. Decimal-place mode fixes digits after the point. Significant-figure mode fixes meaningful digits from the first nonzero digit.

U.S. Liquid Gallons Versus Imperial Gallons
The two gallon systems share a name but not a size. An Imperial gallon is approximately 20.095% larger than a U.S. liquid gallon. This is why 10 L converts to about 2.64172 US gal but only about 2.19969 Imp gal.
The subdivisions differ too. One U.S. liquid gallon contains 128 U.S. fluid ounces. One Imperial gallon contains 160 Imperial fluid ounces. A U.S. fluid ounce is exactly 29.5735295625 mL, while an Imperial fluid ounce is exactly 28.4130625 mL.
Do not infer the system from the bare abbreviations gal, pt or fl oz. Check the country, document, product label or specification. The result cards on this page use US gal and Imp gal to keep the systems visible.
U.S. dry measure is separate from U.S. liquid measure. This converter deliberately excludes dry pints, dry quarts, pecks and bushels. Use a dry-volume standard when the source explicitly identifies a dry unit.
Liters, Cubic Units and Capacity
A liter, also spelled litre, is the special name for one cubic decimetre. One liter equals exactly 1,000 milliliters, 1,000 cubic centimetres and 0.001 cubic metre. The uppercase symbol L is easier to distinguish from the digit 1.
Volume measures three-dimensional space. Capacity describes how much a container is intended or able to hold. The same units often express both, but a container's usable capacity can differ from a simple outside-dimension calculation because of wall thickness, shape, headspace and fill limits.
This converter changes volume units only. It does not calculate a container from dimensions and does not estimate usable fill. Use a shape-volume calculator when you have length, width, height, radius or another geometric measurement.
Why Volume Does Not Directly Convert to Mass
Liters and gallons measure volume. Kilograms, grams and pounds measure mass. A direct conversion between them requires the material's density under the relevant conditions.
One liter of water is often used as a rough kilogram estimate, but it is not a universal exact conversion. Density changes with substance, composition, temperature and pressure. A liter of oil, fuel or syrup has a different mass from a liter of water.
Keep volume conversion separate from density calculation. First convert all volume values to a consistent unit. Then apply a verified density with compatible units if mass is required.
Choosing a Useful Result Precision
Use decimal places when a form, recipe or record requests a fixed number of digits after the decimal point. Use significant figures when the meaningful digit count should remain consistent across small and large values.
Keep extra internal digits during later calculations and round once at the final reporting step. If a small nonzero result displays as zero, increase the decimal places or switch to significant figures. The calculator warns when display rounding hides a nonzero exact result.

Common Liters and Gallons Conversion Mistakes
- Leaving the gallon undefined: select U.S. liquid or Imperial before calculating.
