A melt value vs resale value calculator compares two different ways an item may produce cash. The melt route values only the recoverable metal content. The resale route values the item as a complete product, collectible, component, or usable object. The higher headline value is not always the better option because each route may include different deductions, fees, shipping costs, testing requirements, and payment risks.

The calculator begins with gross weight. It subtracts the non-metal weight you enter, applies metal purity, and converts the resulting fine-metal weight into the unit used by your reference price. This produces theoretical melt value. It then applies the entered payable recovery, refining percentage fee, fixed charge, and melt-route shipping cost to estimate net melt proceeds.

For resale, you can enter a total price, a price per gross weight unit, or a percentage of theoretical melt value. The tool subtracts the selling percentage fee, fixed selling costs, and resale shipping or insurance. It then compares net resale proceeds with net melt proceeds. The tool uses kilograms as an internal bridge between weight and price units. One troy ounce equals 31.1034768 grams. A regular avoirdupois ounce equals 28.349523125 grams. Selecting the correct ounce matters because precious-metal benchmarks commonly use troy weight.

Worked Melt vs Resale Example

Assume a jewelry item weighs 20 grams, including 1 gram of stones or other excluded material. The remaining metal-bearing weight is 19 grams. At 91.67% purity, the item contains about 17.4173 grams of fine gold. With an entered gold reference price of $3,300 per troy ounce, theoretical melt value is about $1,847.93.

Suppose a refiner pays for 98% of calculated value, charges 2% of the payable amount, adds a $15 fixed charge, and requires $20 for shipping or insurance. Recovery-adjusted payable value is $1,810.97. After percentage and fixed costs, estimated net melt proceeds are $1,739.75.

Now assume the intact item has an expected gross resale price of $2,100. An 8% marketplace or payment fee costs $168. Add $25 of fixed preparation costs and $30 of shipping or insurance.
