How to Convert Millimeters to Inches

One international inch is defined as exactly 25.4 millimeters. To change millimeters into inches, divide the millimeter value by 25.4. The same operation is multiplication by the exact reciprocal 5/127.

Inches = Millimeters ÷ 25.4 = Millimeters × 5/127

The decimal expansion of 5/127 is 0.03937007874... and does not terminate. Using a shortened multiplier such as 0.039 or 0.03937 before calculating adds avoidable error. This converter retains the exact ratio internally.

How to convert inches to millimeters

Reverse the direction by multiplying inches by exactly 25.4. The equivalent fraction is 127/5.

Millimeters = Inches × 25.4 = Inches × 127/5

For example, 8.5 inches multiplied by 25.4 equals 215.9 millimeters exactly as a mathematical conversion of the entered decimal. Whether a measured result should retain every digit depends on the precision or tolerance of the source measurement.

Millimeters to Inches Examples

Example 1: Convert 1 mm to inches

Divide 1 by 25.4. The exact value is 5/127 inch, whose decimal expansion begins 0.03937007874. Rounded to six decimal places, 1 mm equals approximately 0.039370 in.

1 mm ÷ 25.4 = 5/127 in ≈ 0.03937007874 in

Example 2: Convert 25.4 mm to inches

This value produces a whole-number result. The international inch is defined as exactly 25.4 mm, so 25.4 millimeters equals exactly 1 inch. No recurring decimal needs to be rounded.

25.4 mm ÷ 25.4 = 1 in exactly

Example 3: Convert 100 mm to inches

Dividing 100 by 25.4 gives 500/127 inch, or 3.937007874... inches. The six-place display is 3.937008 in. At the nearest 1/16 inch, the practical fraction is approximately 3 15/16 in.

Example 4: Convert 1/2 inch to millimeters

Multiply 1/2 by 25.4 to obtain exactly 12.7 mm. A fraction or mixed number entered in the inch direction is parsed as an exact rational value before conversion.

1/2 in × 25.4 = 12.7 mm exactly

Decimal Inches, Fractional Inches and Feet Plus Inches

Decimal inches suit calculations, digital drawings and tolerances. Fractions are common on tape measures, workshop scales, woodworking plans and construction drawings. The converter rounds total inches to one selected binary fraction: 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64 or 1/128 inch.

The 1/128-inch setting is a fine computational increment. NIST Handbook 44 notes that physical scale divisions smaller than 1/64 inch are seldom convenient or advisable, and that 1/32-, 1/16- or 1/8-inch divisions are usually preferable for unaided-eye reading.

The mixed-inch and feet-plus-inches forms come from the same rounded tick count. This matters near boundaries. If 11.99 inches rounds to 12 inches at the selected increment, the companion output carries correctly to 1 ft 0 in. It will not show conflicting values such as 12 in and 0 ft 11 15/16 in.

A fraction is labelled exact only when the converted value lands on the selected increment. Otherwise it is an independent approximation. For signed values, one minus sign applies to the complete measurement. For example, -361.95 mm equals exactly -14.25 in and is written -14 1/4 in or -(1 ft 2 1/4 in).

Exact Conversion, Rounding and Measurement Precision

The conversion factor adds no uncertainty because the international inch has an exact metric definition. That does not make every entered measurement exact. A ruler reading, body measurement, product dimension or manufacturing result may have limited resolution and uncertainty.

Separate four ideas:

  • Exact factor: 1 in = 25.4 mm by definition.
  • Exact mathematical result: the entered decimal multiplied by the exact rational factor.
  • Displayed decimal: the exact result rounded to the selected decimal places or significant figures.
  • Measured result: a report limited by the original measurement, tolerance and required method.

The default tie rule is round-to-nearest, ties-to-even. In an exact halfway case, the retained final digit becomes even. The alternate ties-away rule moves a halfway magnitude away from zero. The result panel states the selected precision and shows the absolute change caused by final rounding.

Good practice: Keep the exact factor and guard digits through the calculation. Round once at the end. Extra displayed decimals do not improve the accuracy of the source measurement.

Common Millimeter and Inch Conversion Mistakes

  • Using the factor in the wrong direction. Divide millimeters by 25.4. Multiply inches by 25.4.
  • Using 0.039 as an exact multiplier. One millimeter is exactly 5/127 inch, not exactly 0.039 inch.
  • Rounding before the final step. Shortening the factor or an intermediate answer can change the reported result.
  • Dropping the unit. A bare number does not show whether the result is millimeters, decimal inches or a fraction of an inch.
  • Creating false precision. A long decimal conversion does not prove that the original dimension was measured that finely.
  • Applying a linear factor to area or volume. Square and cubic conversions require squared or cubed factors.
  • Treating 39.37 inches as exactly 1000 mm. It equals 999.998 mm. The familiar 39.37 value is itself rounded.

Millimeters vs Inches

The metre is the SI base unit of length. The prefix milli represents one-thousandth, so 1000 mm equals 1 m. The inch is a non-SI unit used in US customary and imperial measurement contexts. One inch is larger than one millimeter and equals exactly 25.4 mm.

Millimeters often appear in machining, fastener sizes, product dimensions, technical drawings, electronics and laboratory work. Inches often appear in tools, lumber, screens, print sizes and US product listings. International workflows often need both because drawings, parts and suppliers may use different unit systems.

This page converts linear length only. It does not convert pixels without a pixel-density value, mass without another relationship, or area and volume using a single linear factor.
