Calculate Overtime Pay
Use one workweek. Enter hours actually worked separately from paid leave or other non-work time.
An overtime pay calculator estimates earnings when some hours receive a premium above the regular rate. The familiar time-and-a-half rule pays 1.5 times the regular rate. A double-time rule pays 2 times that rate. The difficult part is often deciding which hours qualify, what belongs in the regular rate and whether a worker is covered by the selected rule.
This calculator keeps those decisions visible. You can use the United States federal weekly preset, an India central weekly estimate, a custom weekly threshold or a custom daily-plus-weekly method. It supports an hourly rate, a converted weekly or monthly salary, includable incentive earnings, paid non-work time, other pay and a simple deduction estimate.
How to Use the Overtime Pay Calculator
- Select the overtime rule. Use a country preset only when its stated scope matches your work.
- Select the worker’s eligibility status. If you are unsure, calculate the amount but treat it as a scenario, not an entitlement.
- Choose the currency. Currency changes the display only. It does not convert exchange rates.
- Select hourly, weekly salary or monthly salary as the pay basis.
- Enter the base pay. For salary conversion, review the hours used as the divisor.
- Enter hours actually worked. Paid leave and an unworked holiday belong in the separate non-work field.
- Review the overtime threshold and multipliers. A preset fills them, but you remain responsible for the correct rule.
- Add a nondiscretionary bonus or commission only when it belongs in the regular-rate calculation for this week.
- Enter excluded other pay, estimated percentage deductions and fixed deductions if you want a rough take-home figure.
- Select “Calculate Overtime Pay,” then review the component table before using the result.
Use the daily-plus-weekly mode when a rule creates overtime after a daily limit and also after a weekly limit. Enter each day separately. The calculator first classifies daily premium hours, then moves remaining regular hours above the weekly threshold into overtime. It does not apply both premiums to the same hour.
Overtime Pay Formula
For a simple hourly employee with no includable bonus, the basic weekly formula is straightforward:
The calculator uses a premium method to avoid paying straight time twice. It first pays the base hourly equivalent for every worked hour. It then adds only the extra premium above 1.0.
When you enter includable incentive earnings, the calculator estimates an adjusted regular rate by adding those earnings to straight-time worked pay and dividing by hours worked. Bonus allocation rules differ. A flat bonus, production bonus, commission, shift differential or payment covering several weeks may require another method.
Worked Example: 50 Hours at $20 per Hour
Assume a covered employee earns $20 per hour and works 50 hours in one workweek. The rule pays time and a half after 40 hours. There is no separate double-time pay, bonus or paid leave.
- Regular threshold: 40 hours.
- Overtime hours: 50 − 40 = 10 hours.
- Straight-time pay for all 50 hours: 50 × $20 = $1,000.
- Additional overtime premium: 10 × 0.5 × $20 = $100.
- Total gross pay: $1,000 + $100 = $1,100.
- Gross compensation attributable to the 10 overtime hours is $300, because those hours receive $20 straight time plus a $10 premium.
- At an entered 15% deduction estimate, take-home pay is $935.
- If the same week repeats 52 times, annualized gross pay is $57,200.
The annualized result is a projection, not an employment contract. Real overtime often changes by season, staffing level, leave, holidays and payroll period.
United States Federal Overtime Estimate
The U.S. Department of Labor states that employees covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act must generally receive at least one and one-half times their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. A workweek is a fixed, recurring period of 168 hours. An employer generally cannot average 30 hours in one week and 50 in the next to remove the second week’s overtime.
The federal rule does not create daily overtime by itself. It also does not automatically require a premium for Saturday, Sunday, holiday or night work. Those hours can still push actual worked time above 40. State law, a collective agreement or an employer policy may give a more favourable result.
Salary alone does not make a worker exempt. Duties, pay basis and other legal tests matter. The calculator’s salary options only convert a salary amount into an hourly equivalent. They do not perform an exemption test or choose a legally correct divisor for every compensation agreement.
Review the current U.S. Department of Labor Fact Sheet 23 before relying on the federal preset. State agencies should be checked when local law adds daily overtime, double time, seventh-day rules or a broader regular-rate definition.
India Overtime Estimate in 2026
India’s four labour codes took effect on November 21, 2025. Section 14 of the Code on Wages, 2019 provides an overtime rate of at least twice the normal rate where an employee whose minimum wage is fixed under the Code works beyond the normal working day. The Ministry of Labour and Employment’s March 2026 FAQs state that an employee, including a worker, whose minimum wage is fixed under the Code is eligible for overtime.
The Code on Wages (Central) Rules, 2026 use eight hours to convert a daily wage into an hourly wage and cap the normal week at 48 hours for the covered central framework. The Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions (Central) Rules, 2026 also contain working-hour, daily-wager, weekly and sector-specific provisions. State rules, establishments, occupations, rest days and more favourable employment terms can change the result.
The India preset therefore uses a 48-hour weekly threshold and a 2.0 multiplier as a planning starting point. It does not decide whether the central or a state rule applies. Enter the normal hourly wage used by the applicable rule. For a monthly planning conversion, a common central-rule structure is monthly wages divided by 26 days and then by 8 hours, which equals a divisor of 208. Verify the wage components before using that shortcut.

Weekly Overtime Versus Daily Overtime
A weekly-only rule classifies hours after one threshold. If the threshold is 40 and total worked time is 46 hours, the result is 40 regular hours and 6 overtime hours. Paid leave is excluded from worked time unless the applicable rule says otherwise.
A daily-plus-weekly rule needs a second step. Suppose you work 10 hours on Monday and 8 hours on each of four other days. A daily rule after 8 hours first identifies 2 overtime hours on Monday. Total weekly worked time is 42 hours. The remaining 40 regular hours do not exceed the weekly threshold, so the final allocation is 40 regular and 2 overtime hours.
If daily classification leaves 44 regular hours, the calculator moves the last 4 regular hours into weekly overtime. It does not add another premium to hours already classified as daily overtime or double time. Special seventh-day and consecutive-day rules are not modeled. Use daily mode only after you have confirmed the thresholds and treatment that apply.
What Counts in the Regular Rate?
The regular rate may be broader than the stated hourly wage. Under U.S. federal guidance, it generally includes remuneration for employment unless a payment qualifies for exclusion. Nondiscretionary bonuses, commissions and shift differentials can affect the rate. Expense reimbursements, some gifts, paid leave and qualifying premium payments may be excluded.
This tool offers two separate money fields:
- Includable bonus or commission: added to the rate base and gross pay.
- Other pay excluded from regular rate: added to gross pay but not used to increase the overtime rate.
Do not guess between them. Review the compensation plan and legal rule. A bonus earned across a month or quarter may need to be allocated back to the weeks in which it was earned. Payroll may owe an additional overtime adjustment after the final bonus becomes known.
How Salary Conversion Works
Select weekly salary conversion when you know the salary for one week and the number of regular hours it covers. The estimated hourly equivalent is weekly salary divided by those hours. Select monthly salary conversion when you know a monthly amount and the applicable monthly-hour divisor.
For example, an $800 weekly salary divided by 40 hours gives a $20 hourly equivalent. A common U.S. 40-hour conversion divides monthly salary by about 173.333 hours, which equals 40 × 52 ÷ 12. Under the stated India central conversion, a monthly amount of ₹62,400 divided by 208 gives ₹300 per hour. These are arithmetic conversions. A salary may cover a different number of hours, include different wage components or fall under a special overtime method.
Time and a Half, Double Time and Holiday Pay
| Pay type | Multiplier example | Pay at a $20 regular rate | Important check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight time | 1.0× | $20 per hour | Base compensation for worked hours |
| Time and a half | 1.5× | $30 per hour | Confirm threshold and coverage |
| Double time | 2.0× | $40 per hour | Usually comes from a specific law or policy |
| Holiday or weekend premium | Policy-specific | Varies | The calendar day alone does not create federal U.S. overtime |
| Paid but unworked leave | Often 1.0× | $20 per paid hour | May not count toward worked-hour threshold |
Gross Overtime Pay Versus Take-Home Pay
Gross pay is earnings before tax, benefits and other deductions. Take-home pay is what remains after payroll deductions. Actual withholding depends on country, tax year, filing information, year-to-date wages, social contributions, benefits, garnishments and employer systems.
The percentage and fixed deduction fields provide a rough scenario. They do not calculate federal, state, local, Social Security, Medicare, income tax, provident fund, ESI, professional tax or any other statutory item. For a detailed U.S. withholding estimate, move the calculated gross amount to the 2026 Paycheck Calculator.
Common Overtime Calculation Errors
Averaging two workweeks
Biweekly payroll does not automatically mean an 80-hour overtime threshold. A weekly rule usually tests each workweek separately. Calculate 50 hours and 30 hours as two weeks, not as one 80-hour average.
Counting paid leave as worked time
A paycheck may show 48 paid hours while only 40 were worked. Enter unworked leave separately unless the governing rule treats it as hours worked.
Using the stated wage instead of the regular rate
An incentive, commission or shift differential may raise the overtime rate. Review all remuneration allocated to the period.
Assuming salary means no overtime
Exemption depends on the applicable legal test. Job title and salary label alone do not settle eligibility.
Applying daily and weekly premiums twice
Hours already paid as daily overtime generally should not receive a second weekly premium unless a specific rule requires it. The custom daily mode avoids this basic double count.
Treating a deduction estimate as payroll tax
A flat percentage does not reproduce a tax system. Use it only for a quick planning range.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate overtime pay?
Find the hours above the applicable threshold, multiply them by the regular rate and overtime multiplier, then add regular and other included pay. This calculator uses a premium method so straight-time pay is not counted twice.
What is time-and-a-half pay?
Time and a half means 1.5 times the regular rate. At a $20 regular rate, time-and-a-half compensation is $30 for each qualifying overtime hour.
Does overtime always start after 40 hours?
No. Forty hours is the common U.S. federal workweek threshold for covered nonexempt employees. Other countries, states, occupations, contracts and daily rules may use different thresholds.
Are salaried employees eligible for overtime?
Some are. Salary alone does not establish exemption. Duties, pay basis, salary level and the governing law or special exemption must be checked.
Do bonuses and commissions affect overtime pay?
They can. Nondiscretionary bonuses, commissions and other remuneration may belong in the regular rate, while qualifying discretionary or excluded payments may not. Allocation across pay periods also matters.
How is overtime pay calculated in India?
The Code on Wages provides at least twice the normal rate for eligible overtime work. The correct threshold, wage base and coverage depend on the applicable central or state rules, establishment, occupation and employment terms.
How does the daily-plus-weekly mode avoid double counting?
It classifies daily overtime and double-time hours first. It then moves only remaining regular hours above the weekly threshold into overtime, so one hour is not automatically placed in two premium groups.
Is holiday or weekend work automatically overtime?
Not under the general U.S. federal rule solely because of the day. The hours may still push worked time above 40, and a state law, contract or employer policy may require separate premium pay.
Is the estimated take-home pay exact?
No. The calculator applies only the percentage and fixed deductions you enter. Actual tax withholding, benefits, statutory contributions, year-to-date limits and payroll rounding are not modeled.
