How to Use This Ovulation Calculator
- Select Average cycle length when your recent cycles are reasonably regular.
- Enter the first day of your latest period. Use the first day of normal menstrual bleeding, not light spotting or the final bleeding day.
- Enter your average cycle length from 20 to 40 days. Count from the first day of one period to the first day of the next period.

What Does an Ovulation Calculator Estimate?
Ovulation is the release of an egg from an ovary. An ovulation calculator estimates when this event may occur by working backward from the next expected period. The central calendar model assumes ovulation occurs about 14 days before the next period. Because the first day of menstrual bleeding is Cycle Day 1, the estimated ovulation cycle day equals the cycle length minus 14.
The tool also shows a fertile window. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine defines the fertile window for counseling as the six-day interval ending on the day of ovulation. This range starts five days before the central ovulation estimate because sperm can remain capable of fertilization for several days. It ends on the estimated ovulation date.
One month can differ from another. The NHS notes that ovulation is difficult to pinpoint and often occurs around 10 to 16 days before the next period. This tool therefore shows both a central date and a wider likely ovulation range. Neither result confirms what happened biologically.
Ovulation and Fertile Window Formulas
Average-cycle method
The first bleeding day is Cycle Day 1. If the cycle contains 28 days, the simplified model places ovulation on Cycle Day 14. Converting a numbered cycle day to a calendar date requires subtracting one because Cycle Day 1 is the entered LMP date.
Calendar-day offset from LMP = cycle length - 15
Estimated ovulation date = LMP + calendar-day offset
Estimated fertile window = ovulation date - 5 days through ovulation date
Expected next period = LMP + cycle length
The tool labels the two days before the central estimate through the estimated ovulation date as a higher-chance timing estimate. Research summarized by ASRM found peak fecundability when intercourse occurred within two days before ovulation. This is a population-level observation, not a promise for an individual cycle.
Wider ovulation range
To show biological uncertainty, the wider range counts back 16 to 10 days from the expected next period. It is intentionally broader than the central 14-day assumption.
The six-day fertile window shown in the main result still centers on the standard calendar estimate. If timing matters, do not assume every date outside that central window is infertile.
Shortest-and-longest-cycle history method
When cycle lengths vary, one average can hide the spread. The history method uses a traditional calendar range based on the shortest and longest recorded cycles. It gives a broad set of potentially fertile cycle days and deliberately does not return one ovulation date.

Calendar date for Cycle Day N = LMP + (N - 1) days
Use lengths from the same set of at least 6 recent complete cycles. This method remains an estimate. It becomes weak when ovulation is irregular or when pregnancy, breastfeeding, hormonal medicine, illness, perimenopause, or fertility treatment changes the cycle.
Worked Ovulation Date Example
Suppose the first day of the last period was July 1, 2026, and the average cycle length was 28 days.
- Calculate the estimated ovulation cycle day: 28 - 14 = Cycle Day 14.
- Convert that to a calendar offset: 14 - 1 = 13 elapsed days after July 1.
- Add 13 days. The estimated ovulation date is July 14, 2026.
- Count back five days. The estimated fertile window is July 9 through July 14.
- The higher-chance estimate is July 12 through July 14.
- Add 28 days to July 1. The next period is estimated for July 29, 2026.
- Counting back 16 to 10 days from July 29 gives a wider ovulation range of July 13 through July 19.
The dates are correct for the formula, but the formula cannot prove ovulation happened on July 14. A delayed or earlier ovulation changes the fertile timing.

How Accurate Is an Ovulation Calculator?
A calendar calculator is accurate at adding and subtracting dates, but biological accuracy is limited. ASRM reviewed research in which downloadable calendar apps reached a maximum accuracy of only 21% for predicting the exact day of ovulation. That finding is why this page emphasizes ranges instead of presenting one date as confirmed.
Even a cycle described as regular can shift. The follicular phase before ovulation varies more than the post-ovulation phase, and stress, illness, travel, sleep changes, weight changes, age, and medicines may affect timing. A predicted window can also move if the entered cycle length is an average built from cycles with different lengths.
A urine ovulation predictor kit detects an LH rise. MedlinePlus states that a positive home test often suggests ovulation within about 24 to 36 hours, though this is not true for everyone. ASRM guidance describes the six days ending on ovulation as the fertile window and reports the highest pregnancy rates with intercourse every 1 to 2 days during that interval. The NHS also gives a simpler option: regular intercourse every 2 to 3 days across the cycle reduces the need to identify one exact date.
Timing is only one part of fertility. Age, sperm factors, tubal health, ovulation, medical conditions, and chance all affect whether conception occurs. A correctly timed cycle does not guarantee pregnancy, and a month without pregnancy does not prove infertility.
