The Core Percentage Formula

A percentage expresses a quantity per hundred. The word percent means “for every 100.” In the basic relationship, the part is the amount being compared, the whole is the complete reference amount, and the rate is the percentage.

Part = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Whole

You can rearrange this one equation to solve any of the three unknowns:

  • Find the part: Part = Percentage ÷ 100 × Whole
  • Find the percentage: Percentage = Part ÷ Whole × 100
  • Find the whole: Whole = Part ÷ (Percentage ÷ 100)

Always identify the reference whole before choosing a formula. The same part can represent different percentages when the whole changes. For example, 30 is 30% of 100, 15% of 200 and 60% of 50.

How to Find a Percentage of a Number

Use the first mode when the percentage and whole are known. Convert the percentage to a rate by dividing it by 100, then multiply the rate by the whole.

15% of 240 = (15 ÷ 100) × 240 = 0.15 × 240 = 36

Here, 36 is the percentage value or part. The remaining value is 240 − 36 = 204, and the complementary percentage is 100% − 15% = 85%. The calculator shows all three values so you can check whether the answer fits the original whole.

This mode also works with fractional percentages. For 1/3% of 300, the exact rate is 1/300. Multiplying 300 by 1/300 gives exactly 1. Keeping the percentage as a fraction avoids an early approximation such as 0.333333%.

How to Find What Percent One Number Is of Another

Use the second mode when the part and whole are known. Divide the part by the whole, then multiply the ratio by 100. A nonzero part with a zero whole has no percentage solution. If both values are zero, every percentage produces zero, so the percentage is not unique.

45 is what percent of 60? (45 ÷ 60) × 100 = 0.75 × 100 = 75%

The ratio 45/60 simplifies to 3/4. That ratio equals 0.75 as a decimal and 75% as a percentage. These forms describe the same share. The calculator displays the simplified ratio, exact percentage and chosen rounded percentage together.

A result may be above 100%. If the part is 150 and the whole is 60, the result is 250% because 150 is two and one-half times 60. A negative result is also mathematically possible when the part and whole have opposite signs, although you should confirm that a signed percentage makes sense in your subject.

How to Find the Whole from a Percentage

Use the third mode when you know a part and the percentage it represents. Divide the part by the percentage rate. A nonzero part cannot equal 0% of any whole. If both the part and percentage are zero, every whole works, so no unique whole can be found.

72 is 24% of what whole? 72 ÷ (24 ÷ 100) = 72 ÷ 0.24 = 300

The verification reverses the operation: 24% of 300 equals 72. This mode is often called a reverse percentage calculation, but it is still the same part-rate-whole equation. It is useful when a report states a count and its share but does not state the total.

Do not confuse finding the whole with reversing a percentage increase or decrease. If a final price is 20% higher than an original price, the final price represents 120% of the original, not 20%. That problem requires the correct changed-value relationship.

Why Exact Fractions Matter

Many percentages produce terminating decimals, but some do not. One third of a whole corresponds to 33 1/3%, whose decimal expansion repeats. If you round the rate before multiplying, the final answer can drift. The calculator first converts each accepted input into an exact fraction, performs the calculation with integer arithmetic, and rounds only the displayed decimal.

For example, 2/7 of 350 is exactly 100. Converting 2/7 to 0.2857 first gives 99.995. The second number looks close, but it is not the exact result. Exact intermediate values matter in repeated calculations, allocations and checks that must add back to a known total.

Rounding and Display Precision

The decimal-place selector changes the displayed rounded result. It does not change the exact fraction used by the calculation. Nearest rounding is applied at the final display step. A value such as 2.345 with two requested decimal places displays as 2.35.

Choose precision that matches the context. Whole percentages often suit quick summaries. Two decimal places are common in reports. More places help when comparing close rates or checking another calculation. Do not present extra digits as greater real-world accuracy when the original data were measured or estimated roughly.

These terms answer different questions. A percentage describes a share of a whole. Percentage points measure the arithmetic gap between two percentage rates. If a rate moves from 20% to 25%, the gap is 5 percentage points. The relative percentage increase is 25%, because the 5-point rise is one quarter of the original 20% rate.

Percentage difference compares two values against an average reference. Percent error compares an observed value with an accepted reference. A discount calculation subtracts a percentage of a price. Budget allocation

If housing uses 30% of a monthly budget of 2,000 units, the percentage value is 600 units. The remaining 70% is 1,400 units. Keep currency and time units consistent when comparing the part with the whole.

Business and data reporting

If 180 of 1,200 visits produce a target action, the share is 15%. This is a mathematical percentage only. The definition of the numerator and denominator still controls what the rate means. Deduplicated users, sessions and events may produce different rates even when they come from the same report.
