Calculation Steps

The pound-ounce factor is exact. Match the displayed precision to the precision of your original mass.

How to Use the Pounds to Ounces Converter

    1. Enter the mass. Type a nonnegative number without a comma, fraction or unit suffix.
    2. Choose the source unit. Select pounds when the entered value is in lb, or ounces when it is in oz.
    3. Choose the target unit. Select the other unit. You may also select the same unit to check an identity conversion.
    4. Set the precision. Choose a limit from 3 to 15 significant digits for displayed answers.
    5. Convert the mass. Review the main answer, both unit values, mixed-unit form, exact factor and steps.
    6. Switch direction when needed. The button reverses the units while keeping your entered number unchanged.

Changing any field clears the old result. Select Convert Mass to calculate again. Reset returns the calculator to 1 pound converted to 16 ounces. Copy Result copies only the current answer and its conversion details. The browser does not need to send your value to a server.

    Pounds to Ounces Formula

One avoirdupois pound contains exactly 16 avoirdupois ounces. Multiply the number of pounds by 16 to convert lb to oz.

    Ounces = pounds × 16

The reverse factor is also exact. Divide the number of ounces by 16 to convert oz to lb.

    Ounces to Pounds Formula

    Pounds = ounces ÷ 16

Because 16 is an integer, a terminating decimal pound value converts exactly to a terminating decimal number of ounces. An integer ounce value also becomes an exact pound fraction with denominator 16. The display may still round when your selected significant-digit limit is shorter than the exact decimal result.

    Worked Pound and Ounce Examples

Example 1: Convert 2.5 pounds to ounces

Multiply 2.5 by exactly 16 ounces per pound. The result is exactly 40 ounces.

    2.5 lb × 16 = 40 oz

Example 2: Convert 24 ounces to pounds

Divide 24 by 16. The result is exactly 1.5 pounds. In mixed form, 24 ounces is 1 pound 8 ounces.

    24 oz ÷ 16 = 1.5 lb

Example 3: Convert mixed pounds and ounces

To combine 7 pounds 8 ounces, first convert the whole pounds to ounces, then add the remainder. Seven pounds is 112 ounces. Adding 8 ounces gives 120 ounces. The same mass is 7.5 decimal pounds.

    7 lb 8 oz = (7 × 16) + 8 = 120 oz

Example 4: Convert total ounces to mixed units

For 35 ounces, divide by 16. Two complete pounds account for 32 ounces, leaving 3 ounces. The mixed result is 2 lb 3 oz, and the decimal result is 2.1875 lb.

    What Pounds and Ounces Mean

This page uses the international avoirdupois pound and ounce, the ordinary mass units used for body weight, food sold by mass, packages and many household goods. One pound, symbol lb, is exactly 0.45359237 kilogram. One avoirdupois ounce, symbol oz, is exactly one-sixteenth of a pound, or 28.349523125 grams.

The British and U.S. avoirdupois systems agree through the pound, so an ordinary U.S. pound and an ordinary UK pound have the same mass. Larger units such as hundredweight and ton differ between the systems. Those larger units do not affect the pound-ounce ratio.

This calculator does not use troy ounces. A troy ounce for precious metals equals 31.1034768 grams, while an avoirdupois ounce equals 28.349523125 grams. Use the Precious Metals Weight Converter for troy mass units.

Decimal Pounds Versus Mixed Pounds and Ounces

Decimal pounds keep the entire measurement in one unit. For example, 2.75 lb equals 44 oz. Mixed notation separates the same mass into whole pounds and remaining ounces: 2.75 lb is 2 lb 12 oz.

Total ounces = (whole pounds × 16) + remaining ounces

To change total ounces into mixed form, divide by 16 and keep the whole-number quotient as pounds. The remainder is ounces. For 40 oz, the quotient is 2 and the remainder is 8, so the result is 2 lb 8 oz. If the total contains a decimal ounce, the remainder may also contain a decimal.

The calculator accepts one value and one unit at a time. To enter 3 lb 8 oz, first combine it as 56 oz or convert it to 3.5 lb. The result panel then rebuilds the mixed form for checking.

    Cooking, Shipping and Body-Weight Uses

Recipes and food labels sometimes state ingredient mass in ounces while scales show pounds. Use this converter only when oz means mass. A fluid ounce, written fl oz, measures volume. Converting fluid ounces to pounds requires the substance density and cannot use the 16-to-1 mass rule.

Shipping services may apply their own chargeable-weight rules, dimensional-weight formulas, minimum increments or rounding. This page converts the physical mass value only. It does not calculate postage or decide whether a carrier rounds a parcel upward.

Body scales often show decimal pounds or mixed pounds and ounces. The mathematical conversion is exact, but the scale reading has limited resolution. A value shown to the nearest 0.1 lb represents increments of 1.6 oz. Use the converted number as a unit change, not as evidence of extra measurement accuracy.

    Accuracy, Rounding and Calculator Limits

The pound-ounce relationship is exact, but most measurements are not. A kitchen scale reading of 8 oz or a parcel scale reading of 2.5 lb may already be rounded. Displaying more digits does not make the source measurement more accurate.

This calculator parses the entered decimal as an exact rational value, applies the exact factor with BigInt arithmetic, and rounds only the display. It uses round-half-to-even at the selected significant-digit limit. Exact displayed results use an equals sign. Rounded displayed results use an approximate sign.

Zero is valid. Negative values, commas, fractions, unit text, incomplete exponents, Infinity and nonnumeric entries are rejected. Inputs may contain up to 80 significant digits and a scientific exponent from −3000 through 3000. Tiny nonzero values stay nonzero in scientific notation.

Common Pound and Ounce Conversion Mistakes

    • Dividing pounds by 16 instead of multiplying to get ounces.
    • Multiplying ounces by 16 instead of dividing to get pounds.
    • Reading 2.5 lb as 2 lb 5 oz. The correct mixed form is 2 lb 8 oz.
    • Confusing an avoirdupois ounce with a fluid ounce of volume.
    • Using the ordinary ounce factor for a troy ounce of gold or silver.
    • Mixing pound mass, lb, with pound-force, lbf.
    • Rounding an intermediate answer before another conversion.
    • Copying more digits than the source scale supports.

In physics, pounds and ounces on this page describe mass. Pound-force describes force and depends on an acceleration convention. Use the Force Calculator when force is the required quantity.
