How to Use the Semester GPA Calculator
- Choose your grading scale. Match the grade-point values published by your institution, or select custom points.

Semester GPA Formula
Semester GPA is a credit-weighted average, not a simple average of the grade-point values. A course carrying four GPA credits has twice the influence of a two-credit course with the same grade.
This calculator keeps entered decimals and supported fractions exact while multiplying and adding. It rounds only the displayed GPA. An excluded course contributes neither quality points nor GPA credits. An included F contributes zero quality points while its GPA credits remain in the denominator.
Worked Semester GPA Example
Assume a student earns B+ in a three-credit writing course, A- in four-credit statistics, B in four-credit biology and A in a one-credit seminar. Using the common hundredths preset:
- Writing: 3 credits × 3.33 = 9.99 quality points
- Statistics: 4 credits × 3.67 = 14.68 quality points
- Biology: 4 credits × 3.00 = 12.00 quality points
- Seminar: 1 credit × 4.00 = 4.00 quality points
The totals are 40.67 quality points and 12 GPA credits. The exact semester GPA is 4067/1200. Its decimal expansion begins 3.3891666..., so the two-decimal display is approximately 3.39.
Why Credit Hours Change Semester GPA
Course grades do not always carry equal weight. Suppose you earn an A worth 4.00 points in a four-credit course and a C worth 2.00 points in a one-credit course. A simple average gives 3.00, but the credit-weighted calculation is different.
- Four-credit A: 4 credits × 4.00 = 16 quality points
- One-credit C: 1 credit × 2.00 = 2 quality points
- Semester GPA: 18 quality points ÷ 5 GPA credits = 3.60
Use GPA credits, not earned credits or total attempted credits, unless your institution defines those totals as the same. A pass/fail class might earn degree credit while remaining outside the GPA calculation.
What This Semester GPA Includes
The tool calculates one semester, quarter or academic term from the courses you enter. Do not add courses from earlier terms when you want a semester-only result. A cumulative GPA requires prior quality points and prior GPA credits, which this focused calculator does not request.
Do not enter percentages as grade points unless your school publishes a direct numeric rule. Percentage-to-letter cutoffs, plus and minus grades, and program-specific scales vary.

No single scale applies to every college. The default matches one common 4.0 system. Other presets show frequent alternatives, and the custom mode accepts direct points for each course.

The exact-thirds preset stores one-third values exactly and displays them as 3.667, 3.333 and similar rounded labels. The whole-letter preset treats every plus or minus variation as its base letter. Verify the transcript key for your program, especially for graduate, law, medical or international grading systems.
Pass/Fail, Withdrawals, Repeats and Transfer Credits
Transcript symbols do not have universal GPA treatment. The calculator defaults common non-numeric statuses to excluded, but you must choose the entry matching your institution's rules.
- Pass, credit or satisfactory: often earns degree credit without GPA points. A failing outcome under a pass/fail option may still count as F at some schools.
- Withdrawal: commonly appears as W and does not enter GPA, although special withdrawal or failure symbols may differ.
- Incomplete or in progress: usually remains outside GPA until replaced by a final grade. Deadlines and automatic conversions vary.
- Repeated courses: some colleges count every attempt, some count the latest attempt, and some permit formal grade replacement or forgiveness.
- Transfer work: accepted credits may apply to a degree without entering the home institution GPA. Follow the receiving institution's official transfer policy.
- Audit and zero-credit work: normally has no GPA weight. Do not invent credits or points for an entry omitted from the official calculation.
The calculator never guesses repeat treatment from matching course names. Include or exclude each attempt manually after checking the applicable policy.
Rounding and Official GPA Differences
This tool multiplies and totals exact entered decimals, then applies round-half-to-even only to the displayed GPA. Your institution may truncate, round at another number of decimal places, store more precise grade values, or calculate separate institutional, transfer, major and program GPAs.
Do not round each course's quality points before adding them unless the published policy explicitly requires it. Early rounding can change the final result. Also avoid using a percentage-to-GPA conversion when your transcript already provides letter grades or grade points.
Common Semester GPA Calculation Mistakes
- Taking a simple average of course grades instead of weighting by GPA credits.
- Leaving an F out of the denominator when the institution counts the attempted credits.
- Including pass, withdrawal, audit or transfer entries that carry no GPA weight.
- Using attempted credits, earned credits and GPA credits as if they were the same total.
- Applying a 4.33 A+ value at a college that caps A+ at 4.00.
- Assuming a repeated course automatically replaces the original grade.
- Mixing courses from several semesters into a one-term calculation.
- Converting percentages to letter grades with an unofficial cutoff table.

The calculation follows the grade-points-times-GPA-hours method published by the University of Illinois Registrar. Grade mappings and excluded symbols were checked against the official UC Berkeley grade definitions and the University of Minnesota grading policy. Transfer credits often satisfy degree requirements without entering the home institution GPA. Include a transfer grade only when the official semester calculation uses it.
Why do A+ and plus/minus values differ?
Institutions publish different point tables. Some cap A+ at 4.00, some assign 4.33, some omit A+, and plus or minus steps may use tenths, hundredths or thirds.
Is semester GPA the same as cumulative GPA?
No. Semester GPA uses one term's included quality points and GPA credits. Cumulative GPA combines the prior academic record with the current term under institutional rules.
Why might my official semester GPA differ?
Your institution may use another scale, truncate instead of round, store more precise grade points, or apply different repeat, transfer and exclusion rules. This result is an estimate.
