How the Stair Calculator Works
The calculator divides total vertical rise into equal risers that do not exceed the entered maximum. It rounds the riser count up to a whole number, then recalculates the exact equal riser height.
Number of risers = ceiling(total rise ÷ maximum riser height)
Actual riser height = total rise ÷ number of risers
Number of treads = number of risers − 1
The treads are one fewer than the risers when the upper floor or landing acts as the final walking surface. Other configurations may need a different counting convention.

The slope span is the hypotenuse of the rise-and-run triangle. A fabricator still needs extra stock and a verified layout for top and bottom cuts, bearing and connections.

What Does 2R + T Mean?
The expression 2R + T adds twice the riser height to the tread depth. Designers sometimes use it as a comfort relationship, but it is not a substitute for adopted code dimensions, accessibility requirements or professional judgment.
2R + T = (2 × actual riser height) + tread depth
The calculator reports the value without labeling it pass or fail because preferred ranges and requirements differ by guidance, use and jurisdiction.

How to Measure Total Rise and Available Run
- Measure vertically from the finished lower-floor elevation to the finished upper-floor elevation.
- Include known finish thicknesses in the final elevation.
- Measure the clear horizontal space reserved for treads.
- Keep landing space separate from tread run.
- Recheck dimensions at the actual site before cutting material.
Small measurement errors can change the calculated riser count or create unacceptable variation at the top or bottom step.

How do I calculate stair risers and treads?
Divide total rise by the allowed maximum riser height and round up to get the riser count. Divide total rise by that count for the actual riser height. A typical floor-to-floor straight flight has one fewer tread than risers.
How many risers are needed for a 9-foot rise?
A 9-foot rise is 108 inches. Using a 7.75-inch maximum reference produces 14 risers, each approximately 7.714 inches high.
Why are there fewer treads than risers?
When the upper floor or landing serves as the final walking surface, a straight flight normally has one fewer tread than risers.
How is total stair run calculated?
Multiply the number of treads by the horizontal tread depth. Landing space is separate and is not included in this tool's tread run.
How is stair stringer length calculated?
The calculator uses the Pythagorean theorem: square root of total rise squared plus total run squared. This is only the slope span, not final stock or cut length.
What riser height and tread depth should I use?
