What Is a Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Calculator?

A Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana calculator estimates how deposits and annual interest may build a girl child's SSY balance. Enter the contribution, age at opening, expected interest rate and payment timing. The tool separates deposits from tax-free interest and shows a 21-year projection.

SSY is a government small-savings scheme created for a girl child's long-term education and marriage needs. A parent or legal guardian opens the account before the girl turns 10. Deposits are allowed for 15 years from opening, while maturity normally occurs 21 years from the opening date.

The official annual deposit range is ₹250 to ₹1,50,000. Deposits after the opening payment must be in multiples of ₹50. This calculator supports annual and monthly plans, annual contribution increases capped at ₹1.5 lakh, payment timing, inflation and a simplified tax-benefit estimate.

How to Use This Sukanya Samriddhi Calculator

  1. Select annual lump sum or monthly instalments.
  2. Enter the yearly lump sum or monthly amount. Keep the total within ₹1.5 lakh for each financial year.
  3. Select the girl's age when the account opens. She must be below 10.
  4. Use 8.2% for the July–September 2026 quarter, or enter another long-term planning rate.
  5. Select whether deposits reach the account on or before the fifth day or after it.
  6. Add an annual step-up if you want contributions to grow with income. The tool stops increases at ₹1.5 lakh a year.
  7. Include the potential old-regime deduction only if it fits your tax situation. Select a marginal rate.
  8. Enter expected inflation and select Calculate SSY.

For a maximum-contribution illustration, choose annual, ₹1,50,000, age 2, 8.2%, on or before the fifth, and 0% step-up.

How SSY Interest Is Calculated

SSY interest for each calendar month is calculated on the lowest account balance between the close of the fifth day and the end of that month. Interest is credited at the end of the financial year. A deposit credited by the fifth normally earns interest for that month. A later deposit normally starts earning from the following month.

Monthly interest = eligible monthly balance × annual rate ÷ 12

Year-end balance = opening balance + deposits + sum of monthly interest

The calculator follows this monthly-balance method and adds accumulated interest once at year end. It does not compound interest every month. For annual deposits, the payment is placed in April. For monthly mode, one equal payment is placed in each month.

The calculator applies contributions for the first 15 annual cycles. It then stops deposits and lets the balance earn interest through year 21. Read the official Sukanya Samriddhi Account Scheme, 2019 for the controlling rules.

Worked SSY Example

Assume a guardian deposits ₹1,50,000 at the start of every financial year for 15 years. The expected rate stays at 8.2%, and each payment reaches the account on or before April 5. No further deposit is made in years 16 to 21.

  • Total deposited: ₹22,50,000
  • Estimated balance after year 15: about ₹44,75,994
  • Estimated maturity value after year 21: about ₹71,82,127
  • Estimated tax-free interest: about ₹49,32,127

The official statement may differ because the government rate may change, the account can open on any date, interest is rounded annually and transaction credit dates matter. The example uses 21 clean annual cycles for planning.

Latest SSY Interest Rate for 2026

The Sukanya Samriddhi Account rate is 8.2% per year for July 1 to September 30, 2026. The Ministry of Finance kept small-savings rates unchanged from the preceding quarter. Interest is compounded annually, but the government reviews the applicable rate each quarter.

The official Q2 FY 2026–27 small-savings notification confirms the unchanged rate. Do not treat 8.2% as guaranteed for the next 21 years. Actual interest credits use the notified rates in force during each period.

SSY Eligibility, Deposit Limits and Account Term

A guardian may open one account in the name of a girl who has not attained age 10. One girl may have only one SSY account. A family normally has a maximum of two accounts, one for each eligible girl. The scheme provides exceptions for qualifying multiple births, supported by the prescribed documents.

The minimum deposit is ₹250 in a financial year and the maximum is ₹1,50,000. Deposits may continue until 15 years from opening. If the minimum is missed, the account becomes in default. It may be regularised before the end of the deposit period by paying the ₹50 penalty for each default year plus the missed minimum deposit, subject to current procedure.

The account normally matures 21 years from its opening date. This calculator models 15 deposit years followed by six no-deposit years. It does not model a partial opening financial year or exact maturity date.

Why Deposits Stop After 15 Years

SSY separates the deposit period from the maturity period. You fund the account for the first 15 years. After that, the existing balance continues earning the applicable SSY rate until the account reaches its 21-year maturity, unless it closes earlier under a permitted rule.

This six-year no-deposit compounding period produces a large part of the final interest. Continuing to show deposits through year 21 would overstate contributions and violate the scheme design. The calculator therefore displays ₹0 contribution for years 16 to 21.

SSY Tax Benefits and EEE Treatment

SSY is commonly described as exempt-exempt-exempt. Eligible deposits qualify within the combined ₹1.5 lakh deduction limit commonly referenced under Section 80C when the depositor uses the old tax regime and meets the conditions. Interest and eligible withdrawals or maturity payments are exempt.

The tax-saving output multiplies each modelled contribution by your selected marginal rate. It assumes you have enough taxable income and unused deduction headroom. It excludes cess, surcharge, rebates, special-rate income and the effect of other eligible investments. If EPF, life-insurance premiums, home-loan principal or other items already use the limit, your extra saving from SSY may be lower or zero.

The new tax regime generally does not provide the same contribution deduction. Interest and eligible payments remain exempt under the applicable provision. Review the official Income Tax Department deductions guide and exempt-income guide before claiming a benefit.

Annual Deposit Versus Monthly SSY Deposits

FactorAnnual lump sumMonthly instalments
Cash-flow needFull amount available earlySpread across the year
Interest opportunityHighest when deposited by April 5Later payments earn for fewer months
Payment disciplineOne planned transactionRegular standing instruction
Annual range₹250 to ₹1.5 lakhCombined yearly total must stay within the range

Depositing earlier improves the modelled return, but do not borrow at a high rate or drain emergency cash merely to deposit on April 5. Consistent contributions and adequate liquidity matter more than a small timing gain.

SSY fits a long-term goal for an eligible daughter. It is less flexible than a normal deposit or market investment. A family may still need emergency savings, insurance and separate investments for education costs above the SSY corpus.

Education Withdrawal, Marriage Closure and Premature Closure

For the account holder's education, up to 50% of the balance at the end of the preceding financial year may be withdrawn after she turns 18 or passes Class 10, whichever occurs earlier. Documentary proof of admission or fees is required. Withdrawal may be a lump sum or one instalment per year for up to five years, limited to the actual education requirement.

The account may close before 21 years for the account holder's intended marriage after age 18. The request window runs from one month before to three months after the marriage date. Premature closure on specified compassionate grounds generally requires at least five years from opening, except death-related closure under the scheme.

This calculator assumes no withdrawal or early closure. Ask the post office or authorised bank to calculate an actual claim.

Inflation and Real SSY Value

Maturity is a nominal rupee amount. Inflation reduces its purchasing power. The calculator divides each projected closing balance by (1 + inflation)year to show its value in today's money.

At 6% average inflation, the worked example's roughly ₹71.82 lakh maturity after 21 years has purchasing power of about ₹21.13 lakh in today's rupees. This is not an account deduction. It helps you compare future education costs with the projected corpus.

Limitations of This SSY Calculator

The tool assumes one interest rate for the full projection. Actual rates change through government notifications. It simplifies the opening year, uses equal monthly instalments in monthly mode and does not model processing delays, quarterly rate changes, exact official rounding or irregular deposits.

The annual step-up is a savings plan, not a special SSY feature. Contributions stop increasing once the ₹1.5 lakh annual ceiling is reached. The tax-saving figure is illustrative and excludes your income composition, chosen regime, other deductions, cess, surcharge and law changes.

The calculator does not cover education withdrawals, marriage closure, default regularisation, excess deposits, multiple-birth exceptions, residency changes, death claims or compassionate closure. Use official records for any transaction.

The SSY rate is 8.2% per year for July 1 to September 30, 2026. The Ministry of Finance kept small-savings rates unchanged for the quarter.

What is the minimum and maximum SSY deposit?

The annual minimum is ₹250 and the maximum is ₹1,50,000. Deposits after account opening must be in multiples of ₹50.

Why should a SSY deposit be made by the fifth?

Monthly interest uses the lowest balance between the close of the fifth day and month-end. A deposit credited after the fifth normally starts earning from the following month.

How much will ₹1.5 lakh a year grow in SSY?

At a constant 8.2% with each annual deposit made by April 5, ₹22.5 lakh deposited over 15 years grows to about ₹71.82 lakh at the end of 21 years. Rate changes will alter the result.

Is SSY interest taxable?

Eligible SSY interest and maturity proceeds are tax-exempt under the applicable provisions. Contribution deductions depend on your tax regime, available limit and eligibility.

Does the new tax regime give a SSY contribution deduction?

The new tax regime generally does not allow the commonly referenced Section 80C contribution deduction. The calculator includes it only when you select the old-regime estimate.

Who can open an SSY account?

A guardian may open the account in the name of a girl child who is below age 10. One girl may have only one SSY account.

Is a monthly SSY deposit worse than an annual deposit?

An equal annual amount deposited by April 5 earns for longer and produces a higher estimate. Monthly deposits may fit salary cash flow better and still support consistent saving.

When does an SSY account mature?

The account normally matures 21 years from opening. Deposits are allowed only during the first 15 years, while the balance continues earning interest afterward.
