What Is an SWP Calculator?

An SWP calculator estimates how a Systematic Withdrawal Plan may affect an invested corpus. You choose a starting balance, scheduled withdrawal, expected return and duration. The tool applies investment growth and redemptions month by month, then reports total income, remaining corpus and whether the money lasts for the selected period.

Under an SWP, an investor gives advance instructions to redeem a fixed amount or a fixed number of units at regular intervals. The redemption value is paid to the registered bank account. The AMFI investor-awareness material describes SWP as regular withdrawal of a fixed amount from a mutual-fund investment. Frequencies, minimum amounts, dates, exit loads and processing rules differ by scheme and asset-management company.

An SWP is not interest. It sells units. A withdrawal includes a return of your invested cost and, when the NAV is above the relevant acquisition cost, a capital-gain component. Repeated withdrawals reduce the units held. If withdrawals and market losses exceed portfolio growth, the corpus may decline or finish early.

How to Use This SWP Calculator

  1. Enter the current corpus from which withdrawals will start.
  2. Add the gross monthly withdrawal. This is the amount redeemed before the optional tax and exit-load estimates.
  3. Enter an expected annual return before the separate cost input. If your rate already reflects all costs, set annual cost to 0%.

The sustainable starting withdrawal is the highest modeled amount that uses the corpus by the selected end date without running out earlier. The corpus-preserving amount aims to leave the original nominal corpus at the end. Neither figure is a safe-withdrawal guarantee because future returns are uncertain.

SWP Calculation Formula

For a fixed withdrawal at the end of each month, the simplified recurring balance is:

Closing balance = Opening balance × (1 + monthly return) − monthly withdrawal

Effective monthly return = (1 + net annual return)1/12 − 1

The calculator repeats this process for every month. Beginning-of-month timing reverses the first step: it subtracts the withdrawal before applying that month's return.

Net annual return equals the entered return less the entered annual cost. This is a planning simplification. A mutual fund's published NAV performance normally already reflects the scheme's expense ratio. Do not subtract the same cost twice.

Worked Example

Suppose you begin with ₹50 lakh, withdraw ₹20,000 per month, increase the payment by 6% every year and plan for 20 years. The default model assumes an 8% return before a 0.5% annual cost and 6% inflation. It processes 240 monthly periods, tracks the annual rise in withdrawals and compares the result with returns two percentage points lower and higher.

The live result above also estimates capital-gain tax when the equity LTCG option is selected. It begins with the entered ₹40 lakh cost basis and assigns part of each redemption to cost and part to gain in proportion to the modeled portfolio. Actual mutual-fund tax accounting uses transaction-level units and applicable holding periods, so statements from the fund or registrar remain the correct source for filing.

A ₹40,000 fixed payment still equals ₹40,000 after 15 years, but its buying power is lower. At 6% inflation, costs roughly double in about 12 years. A 6% annual increase maintains the intended nominal spending path more closely, but it requires a larger corpus or a lower initial withdrawal.

How SWP Tax Is Estimated in India

Every SWP instalment is a redemption. Tax generally applies to the capital-gain portion, not to the entire amount received. The exact gain depends on the units redeemed, their acquisition dates and costs, the applicable NAV, grandfathering where relevant, the fund category, holding period, tax residency, other income, losses and exemptions.

For transfers on or after 23 July 2024, qualifying equity-oriented fund STCG under Section 111A is taxed at 20%, plus applicable surcharge and cess. Qualifying equity-oriented fund LTCG under Section 112A is taxed at 12.5% on aggregate eligible annual gains above ₹1.25 lakh. These rates are stated in the Income Tax Department's STCG guidance and Section 112A guidance.

From AY 2026–27, a specified mutual fund for Section 50AA broadly includes a fund investing more than 65% in debt and money-market instruments, or a qualifying fund-of-funds. Gains on covered units acquired on or after 1 April 2023 are treated as short-term and taxed at the applicable rate. The official capital-gains guide explains the updated definition.

  • The calculator adds 4% Health and Education Cess to the selected base tax rate.
  • It does not calculate surcharge, marginal relief, loss set-off, basic-exemption adjustment, grandfathered equity cost or tax treaties.
  • The ₹1.25 lakh equity LTCG limit is annual and shared with other qualifying Section 112A gains.
  • The first financial year uses the separate other-LTCG input. Later years assume no other Section 112A gains.
  • Tax is shown as reducing net cash, not as an extra redemption from the corpus.

Return Risk and Sequence of Returns

A constant-return calculator cannot reproduce market volatility. During accumulation, an early fall may be followed by recovery while the investor continues buying. During withdrawals, the same fall forces more units to be sold at lower NAVs. Those units no longer participate in a later recovery. This is sequence-of-returns risk.

The scenario table changes the annual return by two percentage points while keeping withdrawals unchanged. It helps reveal sensitivity, but each scenario still assumes smooth monthly growth. A stronger review also tests an early multi-year decline, lower future returns, higher inflation and unexpected withdrawals.

What the Sustainable Withdrawal Result Means

The calculator finds the starting monthly payment that brings the modeled balance close to zero at the selected end date. It respects the entered annual increase, delay, timing, return and cost. If withdrawals increase 6% each year, the starting sustainable amount will be lower than for a fixed payment.

The corpus-preserving result uses the same process but targets an ending balance equal to the original corpus in nominal rupees. Preserving ₹50 lakh after 20 years does not preserve its purchasing power. The real-corpus output discounts the ending value by the entered inflation rate.

A lifetime plan needs more than a single model. The end date, longevity, healthcare costs, dependants, emergency reserve, pension income, taxation and market behavior matter. Use the figure as a planning boundary, not an instruction to withdraw the exact maximum.
