Estimate a 2026 New York paycheck after federal withholding, New York State tax, optional NYC or Yonkers tax, Social Security, Medicare, Paid Family Leave and payroll deductions.
A New York salary can produce different take-home pay depending on where you live or work, your federal Form W-4, your New York Form IT-2104 and your benefits. Enter one pay period below for a transparent estimate, then compare annual federal liability with the related US income tax calculator.

How the New York Take-Home Salary Calculator Works
The calculator begins with one paycheck’s gross wages. It separates income-tax wages from Social Security and Medicare wages, annualizes the applicable amounts, and applies the selected federal and New York withholding methods. It then subtracts payroll taxes, benefits, New York insurance deductions and other deductions.
New York State withholding uses the 2026 Method II annual exact-calculation schedule and the allowances entered from Form IT-2104. High annualized wages switch to the publication’s Method III top-income-rate schedule. New York City residents, Yonkers residents and Yonkers nonresident employees receive different local calculations.
Withholding is not final tax: payroll withholding is a prepayment. Your actual federal, state and city return can include credits, deductions, other income, part-year residency and allocation rules that this paycheck estimate cannot see.
New York State, NYC and Yonkers Payroll Taxes
“New York tax” can mean more than one payroll item. Select the location that matches your facts rather than assuming every employee pays New York City tax.
| Employee situation | Local method used | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| Lives and works outside NYC and Yonkers | New York State withholding only | New York City resident tax does not apply simply because an employer is in New York State. |
| New York City resident | 2026 NYC resident exact-calculation schedule | NYC allowances from IT-2104 line 2 are separate from the state allowance entry. |
| Yonkers resident | 16.75% resident surcharge applied to the calculated state schedule amount | The surcharge is distinct from New York State withholding. |
| Works in Yonkers but lives elsewhere | 0.50% annualized nonresident earnings-tax method after the published income exclusion | The exclusion falls as annualized wages rise and reaches zero above $30,000. |
What Form IT-2104 Changes
New York Form IT-2104 tells an employer how to calculate state, NYC and Yonkers withholding. It is separate from the federal Form W-4. For 2020 or later federal W-4 forms, an employer may use zero New York allowances if the employee does not submit IT-2104.
- Line 1 allowances affect New York State and Yonkers resident withholding.
- Line 2 allowances affect New York City resident withholding.
- Lines 3 through 5 can request extra state, NYC or Yonkers withholding.
- More allowances generally reduce withholding; claiming too many can create underwithholding.
- Head-of-household filers use the “Single or Head of household” New York status.
Review IT-2104 when you begin a job and when marriage, dependents, multiple jobs, residency or nonwage income changes.
2026 New York Paid Family Leave Deduction
For 2026, covered employees contribute 0.432% of gross wages per pay period toward New York Paid Family Leave, with a maximum annual employee contribution of $411.91 per covered employer. The calculator uses the current paycheck’s gross pay and subtracts any YTD PFL amount entered before applying the cap.
Contribution rate
0.432% of gross pay for the covered pay period.
2026 annual maximum
$411.91 per employee for each covered employer.
Payroll treatment
Modeled as an after-tax deduction, consistent with New York’s official PFL cost guidance.
Some workers can qualify for a waiver, and an employer may pay the insurance cost instead. Uncheck the PFL option if no employee deduction applies to the paycheck you are estimating.
New York Disability-Benefits Contribution
An employer is allowed, but not required, to collect an employee contribution toward statutory disability benefits. The standard contribution is 0.5% of wages, limited to $0.60 per week. This calculator converts the weekly ceiling to the selected pay period—for example, $1.20 for a biweekly check.
An approved disability plan can require a different contribution by agreement. If your pay stub shows no disability deduction or a different amount, turn off the standard option and enter the actual difference under other post-tax deductions when appropriate.
Federal Withholding, Social Security and Medicare
Federal withholding follows the 2026 IRS Publication 15-T automated Percentage Method for a 2020-or-later Form W-4. The tool supports filing status, the Step 2 checkbox, annual Step 3 credits, Step 4(a) other income, Step 4(b) deductions and Step 4(c) extra withholding.
Employee Social Security is generally 6.2% up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500. Medicare is generally 1.45%, plus 0.9% Additional Medicare withholding once wages paid by an employer exceed $200,000 during the year. Enter YTD wages when a paycheck approaches either threshold.
Pre-Tax Benefits and New York Taxable Wages
A payroll deduction does not necessarily reduce every wage base. This estimator treats traditional 401(k)-type contributions as reducing federal, New York State and local income-tax wages while remaining subject to Social Security and Medicare. It treats eligible Section 125 benefits as reducing both income-tax and FICA wages.
- Use the traditional contribution field for a pre-tax 401(k), 403(b) or similar deferral with that common tax treatment.
- Use the Section 125 field only for benefits your payroll system excludes from the relevant taxable-wage boxes.
- Enter Roth contributions, union dues and other after-tax items under post-tax deductions.
Plan documents and payroll records control. For a separate retirement projection, use the 401(k) calculator.
Example: $3,000 Biweekly Paycheck in New York
Assume a single employee earns $3,000 biweekly, lives outside New York City and Yonkers, claims zero New York allowances, has no W-4 adjustments or benefit contributions, and has not reached a year-to-date wage or PFL cap.
Illustrative 2026 estimate
A New York City resident with the same inputs would also have estimated NYC resident withholding. Benefits, extra withholding and employer-specific deductions will change either result.
How to Estimate an Annual Salary or Hourly Paycheck
For a salary, divide annual pay by expected paychecks, then enter one regular check. For hourly work, total regular hours, overtime, tips, commissions and taxable bonuses for the pay period. Do not mix reimbursements that are not taxable wages into gross pay.
- Weekly payroll normally has 52 checks.
- Biweekly payroll normally has 26 checks.
- Semimonthly payroll normally has 24 checks.
- Monthly payroll normally has 12 checks.
Irregular bonuses can use special supplemental-wage methods, so a bonus-only result may not match the regular-pay estimate here. For a nationwide version with manually entered state and local amounts, use the US paycheck calculator.
Why Your Actual New York Paycheck May Differ
A payroll system has employee and employer data that a public calculator cannot access. Common differences include:
- a different W-4 or IT-2104 status, allowance count or additional amount;
- part-year residency, wage allocation or a different work location;
- taxable fringe benefits, imputed income, bonuses or prior-period adjustments;
- different pre-tax treatment under an employer’s benefit plan;
- YTD Social Security, Medicare or PFL thresholds;
- a waived or employer-paid PFL contribution;
- no disability contribution or an approved plan with a different contribution; and
- authorized payroll rounding or another permitted withholding method.
Use the result for planning, then compare it with a recent pay stub. The Global Calculators directory and other free financial calculators and money tools can help with related estimates.
Methodology and Primary Sources
This page uses primary government instructions. Federal withholding follows the 2026 IRS automated Percentage Method. New York State, New York City and Yonkers estimates use the Department of Taxation and Finance publications effective January 1 through December 31, 2026. New York Take-Home Salary Calculator FAQs
How is New York take-home pay calculated?
Start with gross pay, then subtract federal withholding, New York State withholding, any applicable NYC or Yonkers withholding, Social Security, Medicare, Paid Family Leave, disability and benefit or employer deductions. The amount left is estimated take-home pay.
Does everyone who works in New York pay New York City income tax?
No. New York City resident income tax generally applies to city residents, not every person who works in the city. Residency facts matter, and special rules can apply.
What is the 2026 New York Paid Family Leave deduction?
Covered employees may contribute 0.432% of gross wages per pay period in 2026, capped at $411.91 for the year per covered employer. A qualifying waiver or employer-paid coverage can change the employee deduction.
What is the New York disability deduction?
An employer may collect 0.5% of wages up to $0.60 per week for statutory disability coverage, but the employer is not required to collect it. Approved plans can differ by agreement.
How do IT-2104 allowances affect a paycheck?
New York withholding allowances reduce wages used in the exact-calculation method, so more allowances generally mean less state or city withholding. Use the official worksheet rather than guessing an allowance count.
How is Yonkers resident tax calculated?
The 2026 Yonkers resident surcharge method applies 16.75% to the calculated New York State schedule amount after the relevant deduction and allowance steps, plus any requested extra Yonkers withholding.
How is Yonkers nonresident earnings tax calculated?
The 2026 annualized method applies a 0.50% rate after a published exclusion. No withholding is required below $4,000 of annualized pay, and the exclusion decreases as annualized pay rises.
Does a traditional 401(k) reduce New York withholding?
A traditional 401(k) elective deferral commonly reduces federal and New York income-tax wages but generally remains subject to Social Security and Medicare. Your plan and pay stub control the actual treatment.
Why is my actual paycheck different from the estimate?
Differences can come from W-4 or IT-2104 entries, residency, benefit tax treatment, bonuses, payroll rounding, year-to-date limits, employer-paid insurance, garnishments and other payroll adjustments.
Is paycheck withholding the same as final New York income tax?
No. Withholding is a prepayment. Your federal, New York State and any city return reconcile annual income, deductions, credits, residency, allocation and total payments to determine a refund or balance due.
