Use time spent moving if your purpose is to compare pace or speed. If your recorded time includes traffic lights, rest breaks or shopping stops, the result describes the full elapsed period rather than your moving pace. Distance from steps does not require time, so step mode still returns distance when duration is left blank.

Walking Distance Formulas
Distance from speed and time
Time must be converted to hours when speed is in kilometres per hour or miles per hour. Sixty minutes equals one hour. A 30-minute walk equals 0.5 hour, so 5 km/h multiplied by 0.5 hour gives 2.5 km.
Distance from pace and time
Pace is time required for one distance unit. If you walk for 45 minutes at 15 minutes per mile, the distance is 45 divided by 15, or 3 miles. A lower pace number means faster movement because each kilometre or mile takes less time.
Distance from steps
Use the distance between consecutive opposite-foot contacts. A stride normally covers two steps, from one foot contact to the next contact of the same foot. If you enter stride length, this calculator divides it by two before multiplying by steps.
Worked Walking Distance Examples
Example 1: Speed and time
A walker maintains an average of 5 km/h for 1 hour. Distance equals 5 km/h multiplied by 1 hour, which gives 5 km. The same distance is about 3.11 miles. With a measured 75 cm one-step length, the estimated count is 5,000 metres divided by 0.75 metre, or about 6,667 steps.
Example 2: 10,000 steps
A step counter records 10,000 steps and the walker has measured an average one-step length of 75 cm. Convert 75 cm to 0.75 m, then multiply 10,000 by 0.75. The estimated distance is 7,500 m, 7.5 km or about 4.66 miles. If the real step length were 70 cm, the same count would equal 7 km. This shows why personal calibration matters.
Example 3: Pace and time
A walker records a 15:00 min/mile pace for 45 minutes. Distance equals 45 divided by 15, which gives exactly 3 miles, or about 4.83 km. If the 45 minutes included a five-minute stop, the full-session pace differs from moving pace. Use the time definition that matches the pace source.
How to Measure Step Length
A short known course gives a more useful personal estimate than a generic average. Mark a straight, level distance, walk it naturally, count every step and divide course length by step count. For example, 20 m divided by 27 steps gives about 0.741 m, or 74.1 cm per step.
- Use normal footwear and your usual walking pace.
- Start walking before the first marker and continue after the last marker so acceleration and stopping do not dominate the sample.
- Use a longer course or repeat the measurement to reduce the effect of one miscounted step.
- Calibrate walking and running separately. Their step lengths differ.
- Recheck the value when pace, terrain, footwear, mobility or gait changes.
Step Count, Cadence, Speed and Pace
These measures describe different parts of a walk. Step count is volume. Step length converts that volume to distance. Cadence is steps per minute. Speed is distance per unit of time, while pace is time per distance unit.
The units must agree. A 0.75 m step at 100 steps per minute covers 75 m per minute. Multiply by 60 to get 4,500 m per hour, or 4.5 km/h. Real step length often changes with speed, so one fixed calibration does not perfectly represent every stroll, brisk walk, hill or crowded route.
Common Walking Speeds and One-Hour Distance
The table converts speed to distance for exactly one hour. It is arithmetic context, not a fitness target. The CDC currently uses 2.5 mph or faster as one example of brisk, moderate-intensity walking, but relative effort varies with fitness, age, health and conditions.

Why Your Phone, Watch and Treadmill May Differ
A phone or watch may combine accelerometer data, GPS, map correction and a proprietary step-length model. A treadmill calculates belt travel from its own calibration. This page uses the numbers you enter and shows the equation. Different inputs create different results even when every device works as designed.
- GPS can drift near tall buildings, trees, tunnels and indoor routes.
- A wrist device may miss steps when the arm stays still or add motion that was not walking.
- A phone's result can change with pocket, bag or hand placement.
- Treadmill belt calibration and displayed speed can differ from actual belt travel.
- Pauses may be included in elapsed time but removed from moving time.
- Turns, hills and surface changes alter step length even when step count remains correct.
For trend tracking, use one device, one time definition and similar conditions. A consistent method is more useful than mixing GPS distance from one walk with a generic step conversion from another.
Using Distance for Weekly Walking Plans
The weekly result multiplies one walk by the number of similar sessions. It does not assume every day has the same pace, route or step length. Record different walks separately when they vary. The current US physical activity guideline for adults recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, or an equivalent combination, plus muscle-strengthening activity. The recommendation is based on activity time and intensity, not a universal kilometre or step target.
Start from your current ability and increase distance or time gradually. Choose a safe route, visible clothing when needed, suitable footwear and conditions appropriate for your health. Distance alone does not show intensity, terrain, symptoms or recovery needs.
Accuracy and Limits
Speed and time produce an exact arithmetic result for the entered averages. Pace and time do the same. Accuracy therefore depends on how accurately the device measured those inputs. Step-based distance adds another source of uncertainty because step length varies within a walk and between walks.
- The calculator assumes the average speed or pace applies across the entered active time.
- It assumes the entered average step length represents all counted steps.
- It does not reconstruct a route, correct GPS tracks or detect pauses.
- Track laps divide distance by 400 m. An actual lane can have a different lap length.
- The weekly projection repeats the same calculated distance and is not a prediction of future performance.
