How to Use This Weight Gain Calorie Calculator

  1. Choose Mifflin-St Jeor, revised Harris-Benedict or Cunningham. Cunningham requires a credible body-fat percentage.
  2. Select the published male or female coefficient set used by the first two equations. Enter adult age, current height and current weight.
  3. Choose metric or US units. The calculator converts pounds and inches before applying the equations.
  4. Select an activity factor that reflects work, transport, household movement and exercise across a normal week.

Start with recent measurements. Do not choose a high activity factor because of one difficult workout. If the selected factor already represents your training, do not add the same workout calories again. Treat the result as an initial test value and compare it with a consistent multi-week weight trend.

What This Calculator Estimates

A weight gain calorie calculator joins two estimates. First, it predicts resting energy from body measurements. Second, it multiplies that estimate by an activity factor to approximate total daily energy expenditure, often called TDEE or maintenance calories. The selected surplus is then added to estimated maintenance.

Estimated maintenance = predicted resting energy × activity factor
Weight-gain calorie target = estimated maintenance + selected calorie surplus

The result does not measure metabolism, appetite, food absorption or daily movement. It also does not know whether a change on the scale represents muscle, fat, glycogen, food mass or water. That is why the tool displays the maintenance estimate and the surplus separately.

Weight Gain Calorie Formulas

Step 1: Estimate resting energy

All three equations return kilocalories per day. W is weight in kilograms, H is height in centimetres, A is age in completed years and FFM is fat-free mass in kilograms.

Mifflin-St Jeor is the default because it is a practical adult prediction equation. Revised Harris-Benedict provides a second height-weight-age estimate. Cunningham uses fat-free mass, so an inaccurate body-fat input flows directly into the result. None of these equations is an individual metabolic measurement.

Step 2: Apply an activity factor

The calculator multiplies the selected resting estimate by 1.20, 1.375, 1.55, 1.725 or 1.90. These named levels are simplified calculator presets. They are not measured physical activity level values. A custom factor from 1.00 to 2.50 is available when you have a reason to use one.

Step 3: Add a calorie surplus

The default adds 300 to 500 kcal per day. The NHS healthy weight-gain guidance gives this as a gradual adult starting approach. A 2022 critical review of intentional weight gain notes that sports-nutrition guidance often uses a similar surplus but that direct evidence is limited and expected lean-mass gains are not guaranteed.

The 5% to 10% option scales the addition with estimated maintenance. The custom method accepts a fixed 50 to 1,000 kcal per day and warns when the input is above the common gradual range. A larger number is not automatically better.

Worked Weight Gain Calorie Example

Consider a 30-year-old using the male coefficient set, height 175 cm, weight 75 kg and the moderate 1.55 activity preset. Mifflin-St Jeor gives:

Resting energy = 10(75) + 6.25(175) − 5(30) + 5 = 1,698.75 kcal/day
Maintenance = 1,698.75 × 1.55 = 2,633.06 kcal/day
Lower target = 2,633.06 + 300 = 2,933.06 kcal/day
Upper target = 2,633.06 + 500 = 3,133.06 kcal/day

The displayed starting range is 2,933 to 3,133 kcal per day. Revised Harris-Benedict produces a different range because its resting estimate is higher. Cunningham also produces a different result when 20% body fat is entered. The spread shows equation sensitivity, not a prescription to choose the highest value.

A 2023 study comparing smaller and larger energy surpluses during resistance training found that faster body-mass gain was associated mainly with greater skinfold increases, while strength and most measured muscle-size outcomes did not clearly improve with the larger surplus. The study authors advise conservative surpluses and monitoring, especially as training experience increases.

Why the Calculator Does Not Promise Weekly Weight Gain

A fixed conversion such as 3,500 kcal per pound or 7,700 kcal per kilogram treats body weight as a static energy container. Real weight change is dynamic. Energy expenditure, movement, tissue composition, glycogen and fluid can change as intake changes. Food logging and activity-factor errors can be larger than the planned surplus.

The calculator therefore reports calorie inputs, not a guaranteed timetable. Use morning weights under similar conditions if you track weight, then compare weekly averages. A change over two to four weeks is more useful than a single reading. Recalculate when body weight, activity, training volume or health context changes meaningfully.

Weight Gain Is Not the Same as Muscle Gain

A calorie surplus creates energy availability. It does not direct all gained mass to muscle. Resistance training, training experience, protein intake, sleep, genetics and the size of the surplus all affect body-composition change. Early scale movement can also include glycogen and its associated water.

If muscle gain is the goal, combine a conservative starting surplus with progressive resistance training and an appropriate protein plan. This page does not generate macros or exercise programming. People with kidney disease, diabetes, digestive conditions, allergies or another condition affecting nutrition need individualized guidance.

How to Review and Adjust the Estimate

  1. Keep the starting target stable for about 14 to 28 days unless a clinician gives different instructions.
  2. Track intake consistently enough to know whether you are near the target. Include drinks, oils, snacks and weekend changes.
  3. Use several comparable weight readings and a weekly average. Do not react to one unusually high or low day.
  4. If the trend is flat and the inputs were followed, make a small change, such as 100 to 150 kcal per day, then review again.
  5. If gain is faster than intended or symptoms appear, reduce the surplus and seek qualified guidance where appropriate.

Changes in training, steps, work demands and appetite can shift maintenance. The goal is not to make the equation look exact. The goal is to use one transparent estimate, observe the result and adjust cautiously.

Healthy Ways to Add Calories

  • Add energy-dense foods such as nuts, seeds, nut butter, dairy or alternatives, avocado and unsaturated oils where appropriate.
  • Use regular meals and snacks when large meals feel difficult.
  • Include protein foods and a variety of fruit, vegetables and starchy carbohydrates.
  • Use nourishing drinks between meals if they help, while avoiding drinks that replace appetite unintentionally.
  • Do not rely mainly on sugary drinks, sweets or heavily processed snack foods to reach the number.

Calories matter for energy balance, but nutrient quality, tolerance and medical context matter too. A registered dietitian can help when appetite, food access, swallowing, digestive symptoms or a health condition makes weight gain difficult.

When This Calculator Is Not Appropriate

The tool withholds a target for pregnancy or breastfeeding, recent unexplained weight loss, clinical nutrition, eating-disorder care or a BMI below 16. These situations need more context than an online formula provides. NICE nutrition-support guidance treats very low BMI and recent poor intake as possible refeeding-risk factors that require trained assessment.

Seek medical advice if weight loss happened without trying, keeps continuing, or comes with reduced appetite, weakness, digestive symptoms or another concern. The NHS advises getting unintentional weight loss checked because stress, medicines and health conditions can cause it. Children and teenagers also need age- and growth-specific assessment rather than this adult tool.

Calculation Method and Review Sources

Resting-energy coefficients were checked against the original Mifflin-St Jeor study, the Roza and Shizgal revision of Harris-Benedict and the Cunningham fat-free-mass equation. The gradual surplus and food guidance were reviewed against NHS guidance and the 2022 athlete and military weight-gain review.

The tool uses 2.54 centimetres per inch, 0.45359237 kilograms per pound and 4.184 kilojoules per kilocalorie. It keeps full precision during calculation and rounds only displayed values. Inputs and recent results remain in the current page session and are not sent by the calculator.
