This page focuses on date facts. It does not add an interval, compare two dates, remove weekends or calculate clock time. Those tasks need different rules. Keeping the intent narrow makes values such as “week 30,” “day 206” and “159 days remaining” easier to interpret.
How to Use the Calendar Calculator

- Use Previous Month or Next Month to keep the same day number in a nearby month. If that day does not exist, the tool uses the target month’s final date.

What This Calendar Calculator Shows
The result separates fixed facts from display preferences. A date’s weekday, ordinal day, ISO week, quarter and leap-year status do not change when you switch the monthly grid from Monday-first to Sunday-first. Only the date’s visible row and column change.

Calendar Date Position Formulas
The calculator converts the selected Gregorian date into a stable serial day. Date-only serial arithmetic avoids browser time-zone shifts. It then compares that serial value with the first day of the year, month or quarter.
The day-of-year formula includes the selected date. The days-remaining formula excludes it. December 31 is therefore day 365 in a common year and has zero days remaining after it. January 1 is day 1 and has 364 days remaining after it.
Worked Calendar Example for July 25, 2026
Use July 25, 2026 with Monday selected as the displayed week start.
- The date falls on Saturday.
- January through June contain 181 days in 2026.
- Add 25 days from July. The result is day 206 of the year.
- The year is not divisible by four, so 2026 is a 365-day common year.
- Subtract 206 from 365. There are 159 days after July 25.
- The ISO week date is 2026-W30-6. This means ISO week 30 and ISO weekday 6.
- July starts the third quarter. July 25 is day 25 of the 92-day quarter.
- July has 31 days, so six dates remain after July 25 within the month.
- In a Monday-first monthly grid, the selected date appears in row 4 and column 6.
The year-progress value is 206 divided by 365, displayed as 56.44%. It measures the portion of calendar dates reached through July 25. It is not a clock-time percentage for a particular location.
How Weekday Numbers Work
The weekday name is independent of the grid layout. Saturday remains Saturday whether the first visible column is Sunday or Monday. Numbering systems differ, so the calculator labels the ISO weekday separately from the display column.

Use the ISO weekday for an ISO week date. Use the display column only to describe the grid shown on this page. Do not assume another calendar, spreadsheet or programming language uses the same weekday index.
Day of Year, Days Passed and Days Remaining
Day of year is an ordinal count. January 1 is 1, not 0. In a common year, December 31 is day 365. In a leap year, February 29 adds one date, so December 31 becomes day 366.
Three related counts answer different questions:
- Day of year includes the selected date. July 25, 2026 is day 206.
- Days finished before the selected date exclude it. The example has 205 earlier dates in 2026.
- Days remaining after the selected date also exclude it. The example has 159 later dates in 2026.
Adding the three parts gives the year length: 205 earlier days + 1 selected date + 159 later days = 365 days. This identity is a useful check for off-by-one errors.
ISO Week Number vs Calendar Row
An ISO week number is not the same as the row number in a monthly calendar. ISO weeks begin on Monday. ISO week 1 is the week containing the year’s first Thursday. Because of this rule, the first few days of January can belong to the previous ISO week year, and the final days of December can belong to the next ISO week year.
For example, January 1, 2021 was a Friday. Its ISO week date was 2020-W53-5, even though its Gregorian calendar year was 2021. The ISO week-year card makes this boundary visible.
A monthly calendar row is only a layout position. It depends on the weekday of the month’s first date and whether the display begins Sunday or Monday. Row values reset each month. ISO week numbers continue across month boundaries and do not change with the display selector.
Month and Quarter Position
The month-position card shows the selected day and the actual number of days in its month. April has 30 days. July has 31. February has 28 in a common year and 29 in a leap year. “Month remaining” counts dates after the selected day, so the final day of any month returns zero.
Calendar quarters group months as follows:
- Q1: January through March
- Q2: April through June
- Q3: July through September
- Q4: October through December
Quarter lengths vary. Q2 contains 91 days. Q3 and Q4 contain 92 days. Q1 contains 90 days in a common year and 91 in a leap year. The calculator determines the quarter start and next quarter start, then uses their serial-day difference instead of assuming a fixed length.
Leap Years and Month Lengths
The calculator follows the Gregorian leap-year rule described by the U.S. Naval Observatory. A year divisible by four is normally a leap year. A century year must also be divisible by 400. The years 2000 and 2400 are leap years. The years 1900 and 2100 are not.
Leap-year status changes all results after February 28 that depend on the year’s length or ordinal position. February 29, 2024 is day 60 of 366. March 1, 2024 is day 61. March 1, 2025 is day 60 because 2025 has no February 29.

Using the Interactive Monthly Calendar

Changing the week start reorders the headers and moves dates into the matching columns. It does not change the selected date. Month navigation keeps the day number when the target month contains it. If you move from March 31 to the previous month, the result clamps to February 28 or February 29. Moving again to January keeps the clamped day. Common Date Formats
Numeric dates can be ambiguous. The same digits can place the month or day first. The ISO 8601 date format uses year-month-day order, written YYYY-MM-DD. July 25, 2026 becomes 2026-07-25.

Include a label when sharing a slash-based date. Writing “MM/DD/YYYY” or “DD/MM/YYYY” prevents someone from applying the wrong regional order. Prefer the ISO calendar date when exchanging data between systems.
Date-Only Math, Time Zones and Daylight Saving
This tool treats the input as a civil calendar date without a clock time or location. It reads the year, month and day, then performs calculations in a neutral date representation. This avoids shifting midnight to the previous or next date because of a browser’s time-zone offset.
The Use Today button is different. It reads the local date shown by your device. A device with an incorrect clock or time-zone setting can supply the wrong “today.” Enter a fixed date when you need a reproducible result.
The NIST time-unit reference lists one day as 24 hours for unit conversion. A local civil day can still contain 23 or 25 clock hours during a daylight-saving transition. This page counts dates, not elapsed timestamp hours.

The outputs describe the Gregorian calendar. Fiscal quarters, academic terms, retail weeks and payroll periods can follow different boundaries. Use the organization’s own calendar when those labels control the result.
Common Calendar Calculation Mistakes
- Reading 07/08 as July 8 when the source uses day-first order.
- Calling January 1 day zero instead of day one.
- Counting the selected date again when calculating days remaining.
- Assuming every February contains 28 days.
- Treating 2100 as a leap year because it is divisible by four.
- Confusing ISO week 1 with the first partial row of January.
- Expecting a Sunday-first display to change the ISO weekday.
- Using a general calendar result as an official deadline decision.
