A date calculator answers a direct calendar question: what date comes before or after a chosen interval? Enter a starting date, choose addition or subtraction, and provide any combination of years, months, weeks and days. The result includes the full date, weekday, ISO date, day of year and ISO week number.

The difficult part is not adding seven-day weeks. It is deciding what “one month” means when the matching day does not exist. January 31 plus one month cannot land on February 31. This tool makes the month-end rule visible instead of hiding the decision inside the code. It also shows the calculation order, because combining 13 months may produce a different answer from applying one year and then one month.

How to Use the Date Calculator

Quick check: the start date is elapsed day zero. Adding one day to July 24 produces July 25 and an elapsed change of one day. This is different from an inclusive schedule that counts both July 24 and July 25 as two calendar dates.

What This Date Calculator Measures

The calculator performs date-only Gregorian calendar arithmetic. It does not collect a clock time or time zone. Each input and result represents a civil calendar date, so a daylight-saving clock change cannot add or remove an hour from the answer.

The four entered units behave in two groups:

  • Years and months are calendar units. Their lengths depend on the dates crossed.
  • Weeks and days are exact date steps. One week contributes seven calendar days.

This distinction matters. One month can contain 28, 29, 30 or 31 days. One year contains 365 or 366 days. Replacing every month with 30 days or every year with 365 days changes some answers.

Date Addition and Subtraction Formula

For the combined method, first convert the entered years and months into one calendar-month count. Apply that calendar shift using the selected month-end rule. Then convert weeks to days and apply the remaining day shift.

Calendar months = (12 × years) + months
Calendar-stage date = start date shifted by signed calendar months
Day shift = (7 × weeks) + days
Result date = calendar-stage date shifted by signed day shift

The sign is positive for addition and negative for subtraction. The formula does not convert calendar months into a fixed number of seconds. It resolves the target year, target month and requested day inside the Gregorian calendar.

Worked Date Addition Example

Use the default inputs: start on July 24, 2026 and add 1 year, 2 months, 3 weeks and 4 days. Keep the combined order and clamp rule.

  1. Convert 1 year and 2 months into 14 calendar months.
  2. Move July 24, 2026 forward by 14 months to September 24, 2027.
  3. Convert 3 weeks and 4 days into 25 calendar days.
  4. Move September 24 forward by 25 days.
  5. The result is Tuesday, October 19, 2027.

The exact distance between the two dates is 452 elapsed days. That total is longer than 14 × 30 + 25 because the interval crosses calendar months with different lengths and includes the remainder of 2026 plus part of 2027.

Why Month-End Rules Matter

A calendar instruction such as “add one month” is incomplete when the original day is missing from the target month. The calculator offers three explicit interpretations.

Clamp changes the date only when the requested day is missing. Preserve end of month also recognizes that February 28, 2026 is the final day of February and therefore maps it to the final day of March. Carry mode counts the three days that exceed February 28 and moves them forward to March 3.

For subtraction, carry mode moves excess days backward. March 31, 2026 minus one month targets February, which is three days short of day 31. The result under this tool’s carry rule is February 25, 2026: February 28 minus three excess days. The result always continues in the selected direction.

Combined Versus Sequential Calculation Order

Most ordinary inputs produce the same answer under both orders. A difference appears when an intermediate year or month shift changes a day near the end of a month.

Consider February 29, 2024 plus 1 year and 1 month under the clamp rule:

  • Combined order treats the interval as 13 months. February 29, 2024 plus 13 months is March 29, 2025.
  • Sequential order first adds one year. February 29 is clamped to February 28, 2025. Adding one more month then produces March 28, 2025.

Neither answer is automatically correct for every agreement or schedule. Use the order stated by your source rule. If the source gives one combined month count, combined order fits. If it instructs you to apply years and then months as separate steps, select sequential.

Adding Days Versus Counting Dates

Date addition usually treats the starting date as day zero. If a task begins on Monday and lasts one calendar day, the calculated end date is Tuesday. An inclusive list of dates would contain both Monday and Tuesday, so its count would be two.

This tool reports the elapsed change between the start and result. It does not offer start-date or end-date inclusion settings because its main purpose is date arithmetic, not counting a range. Use a days-between-dates tool when you need inclusive or exclusive boundary options.

How Leap Years Affect Results

The calculator uses the Gregorian leap-year rule described by the U.S. Naval Observatory. A year divisible by 4 is normally a leap year. A century year must also be divisible by 400. Therefore, 2000 and 2400 are leap years, while 1900 and 2100 are not.

This rule affects both elapsed-day totals and missing dates. February 2024 has 29 days. February 2025 and February 2100 have 28. When a shift targets February 29 in a common year, the selected month-end rule determines the result.

Weeks, Days and Date-Only Arithmetic

One week always adds or subtracts seven calendar dates in this tool. Three weeks and four days therefore become 25 days. The fixed unit relationship for a day as a duration is 24 hours, as listed by NIST Special Publication 330, but the calculator does not convert the date into local midnight timestamps.

Using date-only arithmetic avoids a common browser error. If two local midnights span a daylight-saving change, their timestamp gap may be 23 or 25 hours. A calendar date still moves from one date to the next. This tool stores the parts in a neutral calendar representation so the result remains stable across device time zones.

  • Elapsed date change reports the signed number of dates moved from the start.
  • Day of year counts January 1 as day 1.
  • ISO week uses Monday-based weeks. ISO week 1 is the week containing the year’s first Thursday.

  • Month-end handling tells you whether the selected rule changed an invalid or end-of-month target.

Useful Date Formulas in Excel and Google Sheets

If cell A2 contains a real spreadsheet date, add a fixed number of days with =A2+B2, where B2 contains the signed day count. Add calendar months with =EDATE(A2,B2). Find a month end with =EOMONTH(A2,B2).

A combined version for years in B2, months in C2, weeks in D2 and days in E2 is =EDATE(A2,12*B2+C2)+7*D2+E2. Use negative input values for subtraction. Spreadsheet applications and account settings differ, so confirm whether a function follows the same month-end rule required by your schedule.
