This projection assumes contributions arrive every month and one interest rate applies throughout. Your EPFO passbook, employer payroll, exact credit dates, annual notified rates and membership status determine the actual balance.

What Is an EPF Calculator?

An EPF calculator estimates how your current provident-fund balance, monthly employee contribution, employer EPF share and annual interest may grow until retirement. It also separates the employer amount diverted to the Employees' Pension Scheme, because EPS does not form part of the withdrawable EPF corpus shown by this tool.

The Employees' Provident Fund is a payroll-based retirement benefit for covered employees in India. Under the standard arrangement, the employee contributes 12% of eligible Basic Pay plus Dearness Allowance. The employer also contributes 12%, but part of the employer share normally goes to EPS and the remaining amount goes to EPF.

This calculator handles a practical choice missed by many basic tools. Your employer may calculate statutory PF on actual eligible pay or restrict it to the ₹15,000 wage ceiling. Select the option matching your payslip. You may then add VPF, model salary growth, change the assumed interest rate and see the future corpus in today's purchasing power.

How to Use This EPF Calculator

  1. Enter your monthly Basic + DA. Do not enter gross salary, take-home pay or cost to company.
  2. Add the EPF closing balance shown in your latest passbook. Keep EPS pension benefits outside this figure.
  3. Enter your current age and planned retirement age.
  4. Select whether employer PF uses actual Basic + DA or the ₹15,000 statutory ceiling.
  5. Enter the expected annual increase in Basic + DA. Use 0% for a flat-pay scenario.
  6. Keep 8.25% to model the declared FY 2025–26 rate, or enter a more conservative long-term rate.
  7. Add a VPF percentage only when you plan an employee contribution above the regular 12%.
  8. Keep standard EPS unless your payslip confirms no pension diversion.
  9. Enter inflation and an old-regime marginal rate, then select Calculate EPF.

Compare the first monthly split with your payslip. If employee PF, employer PF and pension contribution do not match, adjust the contribution basis or EPS option before using the long-term result.

EPF Contribution Formula

For a standard 12% case, the calculator first identifies contributory pay. Under actual-pay mode, contributory pay equals Basic + DA. Under ceiling mode, it is the lower of Basic + DA and ₹15,000.

Employee EPF = contributory pay × 12% + actual Basic + DA × VPF rate

Employer contribution = contributory pay × 12%

Standard EPS = lower of employer contribution and 8.33% × lower of actual Basic + DA and ₹15,000

Employer EPF = employer contribution − EPS diversion

At the normal ceiling, the maximum modelled EPS diversion is about ₹1,250 a month. If contributory pay is higher and the employer contributes on actual pay, the balance of its 12% share goes to EPF. The calculator does not value the future monthly EPS pension because pensionable service, pensionable salary, exit date and special higher-pension cases need separate treatment.

EPFO's present contribution-rate guidance and member FAQs explain the standard contribution split and wage ceiling.

How EPF Interest Is Estimated

The tool calculates interest on the running monthly EPF balance and credits the year's accumulated interest at year end. A contribution is added after that month's interest calculation, so it begins earning from the following month in this projection. This reflects the practical monthly-balance approach but does not reproduce EPFO's transaction-level rounding.

Monthly interest estimate = eligible running EPF balance × annual EPF rate ÷ 12

Year-end EPF balance = opening EPF + employee deposits + employer EPF deposits + annual interest

The latest declared rate used here is 8.25% for FY 2025–26. Future rates are declared for each financial year. Keeping 8.25% constant for decades is a planning assumption, not a promise. Try 7%, 8% and 8.25% to see how sensitive your retirement result is to the rate.

Worked EPF Example

Assume a 30-year-old employee has monthly Basic + DA of ₹50,000, an existing EPF balance of ₹5,00,000 and plans to retire at 58. The employer contributes on actual eligible pay. Salary grows 8% a year, VPF is 0%, standard EPS applies and EPF earns a constant 8.25%.

  • Current employee EPF: ₹6,000 a month
  • Current employer contribution: ₹6,000 a month
  • Current EPS diversion: about ₹1,250 a month
  • Current employer EPF: about ₹4,751 a month
  • Current total EPF inflow: about ₹10,751 a month
  • Estimated EPF corpus after 28 years: about ₹3.75 crore
  • Estimated corpus in today's money at 6% inflation: about ₹73.45 lakh

The projection includes about ₹68.64 lakh of employee contributions, ₹64.45 lakh of employer EPF contributions and ₹2.37 crore of interest, along with the ₹5 lakh opening balance. Salary growth drives much of the late-stage contribution increase. A capped employer basis produces a much smaller result.

Do not assume gross salary is the PF wage. Allowance structure, employer policy, statutory coverage and employment terms affect the contribution base. Match the calculator's first-month results with your payslip or EPFO passbook.

VPF and the Taxable-Interest Threshold

Voluntary Provident Fund is an extra employee contribution above the normal statutory share. It earns the EPF rate and follows EPF rules, but the employer does not match the extra VPF amount. The calculator applies the VPF percentage to actual Basic + DA even when regular statutory PF is capped.

Interest attributable to employee contributions above ₹2.5 lakh in a tax year is generally taxable when the employer also contributes. The threshold is applied to the combined employee EPF and VPF contribution, not the employer share. The tool reports the first-year employee amount above ₹2.5 lakh as a warning. It does not calculate the separate taxable and non-taxable interest accounts or your final tax liability.

High VPF users should review EPFO's PF taxable-interest guidance and their tax statement. Salary growth may push a later year's employee contribution above the threshold even when the first-year output is zero.

EPF Tax Benefit and Withdrawal Treatment

Employee EPF and eligible VPF contributions may count toward the old-regime deduction limit, subject to the combined limit, your chosen tax regime and other eligible investments. The calculator shows a simplified first-year saving using the lower of employee contribution and ₹1.5 lakh multiplied by the selected marginal rate. It excludes cess, surcharge, rebate, other deductions and unused-limit checks.

A recognised provident-fund withdrawal is generally exempt after five years of continuous service. Previous service may count when the PF balance is properly transferred. Certain employment-ending circumstances also receive special treatment. Early withdrawals and taxable interest need case-specific review. The Income Tax Department's employee-benefits guidance and EPFO records should control your decision.

Inflation and EPF Purchasing Power

The retirement corpus is a future nominal amount. Inflation reduces what it buys. The calculator divides the projected corpus by (1 + inflation)years to show today's-money purchasing power. The worked example's ₹3.75 crore future corpus is worth roughly ₹73.45 lakh today at 6% average inflation.

Inflation is not deducted from the EPF account. The real-value result helps you compare the corpus with current living costs. Use your projected EPF alongside pension, investments, insurance and other retirement income rather than treating one account as the full plan.

Limitations of This EPF Calculator

The calculation assumes uninterrupted employment, monthly deposits, a fixed annual salary-growth rate and one EPF rate for the full period. It does not model job gaps, delayed payroll deposits, transfers, withdrawals, advances, non-contributory periods, interest restrictions after exit, changes to the wage ceiling, reduced 10% contribution categories or transaction-level rounding.

The standard EPS option uses the normal ₹15,000 pensionable-pay ceiling. It does not cover higher-pension options, special membership history or pension valuation. The no-EPS option is a payroll-matching aid, not an eligibility decision. Confirm your split from the payslip and passbook.

Tax outputs are alerts, not tax returns. They do not maintain separate taxable-contribution ledgers across years or determine withdrawal tax, TDS, surcharge, cess or regime eligibility. Use official records and qualified advice for a transaction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the EPF interest rate for FY 2025-26?

The declared EPF interest rate for FY 2025–26 is 8.25% a year. The calculator uses 8.25% by default. Future financial years may have different declared rates.

How much do the employee and employer contribute to EPF?

The standard contribution is 12% of eligible pay from the employee and 12% from the employer. Part of the employer share normally goes to EPS, so the full employer contribution does not enter the EPF corpus.

What is the maximum standard EPS contribution?

With the regular ₹15,000 pensionable-pay ceiling, 8.33% is about ₹1,250 a month. The calculator deducts this from the employer share when standard EPS is selected.

Should EPF be calculated on Basic + DA or gross salary?

Use EPF-eligible Basic Pay plus eligible Dearness Allowance, not gross salary or take-home pay. Select actual pay or the ₹15,000 ceiling according to your payslip.

Does VPF receive an employer match?

No. VPF is an additional employee contribution. It earns the applicable EPF rate, but the employer does not add an extra matching contribution for the VPF amount.

When does EPF contribution interest become taxable?

When an employer contributes, interest linked to employee EPF and VPF contributions above ₹2.5 lakh in a tax year is generally taxable. The calculator flags the first-year excess but does not calculate final tax.

Is EPF withdrawal tax-free after five years?

A recognised PF balance is generally exempt after five years of continuous service. Properly transferred previous service may count. Early exit and special termination cases require a rule-specific check.

Is EPS included in the EPF retirement corpus?

No. EPS supports a separate pension benefit and is not added to the EPF lump-sum corpus. This calculator displays the estimated EPS diversion separately without valuing the pension.

How accurate is this EPF calculator?

It accurately applies the entered assumptions and its monthly contribution model. Actual results change with payroll rules, credit dates, annual interest rates, salary changes, withdrawals and EPFO rounding.
