How to Convert Fractional Inches to Decimal Inches
Divide the fraction numerator by its denominator. For a mixed number, first multiply the whole inches by the denominator and add the numerator. Apply one leading minus sign to the complete value.

How to Convert Decimal Inches to a Fraction
Choose a denominator D that represents the desired increment. Multiply the decimal inches by D, round the result to a whole number of ticks, and place those ticks over D. Reduce the fraction and carry any complete inches into the whole-number part.
At a 1/16-inch increment, 0.1 × 16 equals 1.6 ticks. Nearest rounding gives 2/16, which reduces to 1/8 in. The selected fraction is 0.125 in, so its signed rounding difference from 0.1 in is +0.025 in.
The default nearest, ties-to-even rule checks exact halfway cases without binary floating-point error. For example, 0.03125 in is halfway between 0 and 1/16. Ties-to-even selects 0 because zero is the even tick. Ties-away selects 1/16. The page states the selected rule so the result is reproducible.
Worked Fractional and Decimal Inch Examples
Example 1: Convert 3/8 inch to decimal
Divide 3 by 8. The result is exactly 0.375 in. At 1/64-inch resolution, 3/8 also equals 24/64, so the selected fraction stays exactly 3/8 after reduction.
Example 2: Convert 1 7/16 inch to decimal
Convert the mixed number to 23/16, then divide. The exact decimal is 1.4375 in.
Example 3: Convert 0.97 inch to the nearest 1/16

Choosing a Fractional-Inch Increment
Halves, quarters, eighths and sixteenths are common ruler graduations. Some rules and measuring tools add thirty-seconds or sixty-fourths. The 1/128 and 1/256 settings are finer mathematical choices and should not be read as a promise about a physical tool.
A denominator divides one inch into equal parts. At 1/16 in, each tick is 0.0625 in. At 1/64 in, each tick is 0.015625 in. Under nearest rounding, the maximum representational difference is half one tick: 1/32 in for a 1/16 grid and 1/128 in for a 1/64 grid.
Use the increment stated on the drawing, ruler, gauge, specification or reporting rule. Selecting a finer denominator adds display resolution. It does not recover detail that the original measurement never recorded.
Exact Values, Rounding Difference and Tolerance
The calculator parses every accepted value as an exact fraction of integers. Decimal 0.1 becomes exactly 1/10 inside the calculator; it is not stored as a binary floating-point approximation. Fraction reduction, halfway detection and selected-tick rounding all use integer arithmetic.
An equals sign means the displayed value matches the exact input. An approximation sign means decimal-place rounding or fraction-grid rounding changed it. The signed fraction difference is calculated as selected fraction minus exact input. A positive value means the selected fraction is larger; a negative value means it is smaller.
Rounding difference is not measurement error, accuracy or tolerance. Tolerance comes from a specification and defines an allowed range. Resolution describes the smallest displayed or marked increment. Measurement uncertainty depends on the instrument, method, operator and conditions. Keep these concepts separate for machining, fabrication, inspection and safety work.
Accepted Inch Formats and Limits
