Interval
An hours calculator adds time from several start and end intervals. It is useful when one activity is split across a morning session, an afternoon session and an overnight period. Instead of converting each interval to decimal hours by hand, enter every span and let the calculator keep gross time, breaks and net time separate.
This tool accepts common 12-hour and 24-hour clock formats in the same calculation. It totals up to 20 intervals, deducts a break from each one, handles an end time on the next day and shows the answer as hours and minutes, HH:MM:SS, decimal hours and total minutes. Optional rounding applies only to the final net total.
How to Use the Hours Calculator
- Enter the first start time and end time. Use a value such as
8:30 AM,13:05or21:15:30. - Enter break hours and break minutes for that interval. Keep both fields at zero when no break should be deducted.
- Select the end-day rule. Automatic mode moves an earlier end time to the next day. Same-day mode catches a reversed time. Next-day mode forces the end onto the following day.
- Add an optional label such as Morning, Shift 1, Machine A or Client Work.
- Select “Add Another Interval” and repeat the process for each separate span.
- Choose a final-total rounding increment only when a reporting rule requires it. Exact time remains visible.
- Select the precision used for seconds, then select “Calculate Total Hours.”
- Review the exact total, rounded total and interval-by-interval breakdown before using the result.
What This Calculator Adds
Each row produces three values. Gross time is the full clock span. Break time is the duration you enter for removal. Net time is the gross span minus that break. The calculator then adds all gross values, all breaks and all net values separately.
- Exact net total: the sum before optional rounding.
- Gross total: all elapsed intervals before breaks.
- Breaks deducted: the combined excluded time.
- Decimal hours: exact net seconds divided by 3,600.
- Average interval: exact net time divided by the number of rows.
- Rounded total: the final net amount after the selected increment and direction.
The fixed conversions follow the NIST SI unit reference. One minute equals 60 seconds, and one hour equals 3,600 seconds. A conventional 24-hour day contains 86,400 seconds.
Hours Calculator Formula
The calculator converts each clock reading to milliseconds after midnight. It adds one 24-hour day when the selected rule places the end on the next day. Milliseconds keep entries with fractional seconds stable while the total is calculated.
For automatic overnight handling, 86,400 seconds are added only when the end clock reading is earlier than the start. Equal readings remain zero. Selecting “End is next day” adds a complete day even when the readings match.
Worked Example: Add Two Time Intervals
Assume a task runs from 8:30 AM to 12:15 PM, includes a 15-minute break, resumes at 1:00 PM and ends at 5:30 PM.
- Morning gross time is 3 hours 45 minutes.
- Morning net time is 3 hours 45 minutes minus 15 minutes, or 3 hours 30 minutes.
- Afternoon gross and net time are both 4 hours 30 minutes.
- Total gross time is 8 hours 15 minutes.
- Total breaks equal 15 minutes.
- Exact net total is 8 hours, 480 minutes or 28,800 seconds.
- Decimal time is 28,800 divided by 3,600, which equals 8.0 hours.
Using one row from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM would produce 9 gross hours. It would wrongly include the 45-minute gap from 12:15 PM to 1:00 PM unless that gap were entered as another break.
How Overnight Intervals Work
An interval from 10:30 PM to 6:15 AM crosses midnight. Automatic mode sees that 6:15 AM is earlier on the clock and places it on the next day. The resulting gross duration is 7 hours 45 minutes.
The three end-day rules solve different cases:
- Automatic: earlier end means next day; later or equal end means same day.
- Same day only: an earlier end produces an error, helping you find an accidental AM/PM reversal.
- End is next day: the end is always moved forward by one day. An 8:00 AM to 8:00 AM row then equals 24 hours.
One row covers no more than a same-day or next-day span. Split a longer record into daily intervals or use a calculator with explicit dates. Clock readings alone cannot distinguish 8 hours from 32 hours when both use the same start and end.
Accepted 12-Hour and 24-Hour Formats
You may enter 12-hour times with AM or PM and 24-hour times without a period marker. The parser ignores letter case and periods in forms such as a.m. and p.m. Minutes are optional for a whole hour, while seconds are optional for normal hour-and-minute entries.

A number such as 8.30 is not treated as 8 hours 30 minutes. Use a colon for clock time. In decimal-hour notation, 8.30 hours means 8 hours plus 0.30 of an hour, which equals 8 hours 18 minutes.
Decimal Hours and Minutes
Clock minutes use base 60, while decimal hours use base 10. Divide the minute portion by 60 and add the result to whole hours. Keep enough precision for the purpose of your record and round only at the required stage.

Break Deduction Rules
Enter only a break that falls inside its row and must be excluded. The calculator rejects a break longer than the row’s gross duration. A break equal to the gross span is allowed and produces zero net time.
Keep separate breaks with their correct intervals. If a morning interval contains a 15-minute pause and an afternoon interval contains a 30-minute pause, enter 15 and 30 in the matching rows. This makes the breakdown easier to verify and prevents a deduction from being applied to the wrong span.
How Final-Total Rounding Works
No rounding is selected by default. When you select an increment, the calculator first computes every interval exactly, adds the exact net values and rounds the combined total once. It does not round each start time, end time or row.
- Nearest: moves the total to the closest selected increment.
- Down: moves the total to the lower increment.
- Up: moves the total to the higher increment.
For example, 7 hours 53 minutes rounded to the nearest 15 minutes becomes 8 hours. Rounded down, it becomes 7 hours 45 minutes. Rounded up, it becomes 8 hours. The exact result always stays visible beside the rounded result.

Common Hours Calculation Errors
Treating minutes as decimal hundredths
Eight hours 30 minutes equals 8.5 hours, not 8.30 hours. Divide minutes by 60 before adding them to whole hours.
Counting a gap between intervals
If a task stops at noon and resumes at 1:00 PM, use separate rows or enter the full gap as a break. One continuous row includes the gap.
Reversing AM and PM
12:00 AM is midnight. 12:00 PM is noon. Use 24-hour notation when AM and PM entries are easy to confuse.
Forgetting the next-day rule
An end time earlier than the start is usually overnight, but it may also be a typing error. Review the row’s end-day setting and the breakdown.
Deducting a break twice
Do not enter a break if the start and end times already describe net working blocks. Separate rows often make excluded periods clearer.
Using wall-clock math across time zones
This calculator compares entered clock readings. It does not identify a city, UTC offset or daylight-saving transition. Convert real instants to one time zone before adding them.

Accuracy and Limitations
The calculator uses the values you enter. Review every time, AM or PM marker, break and day rule. The breakdown is designed to make those assumptions visible before you copy the total.
Results use fixed 24-hour clock days. They do not adjust for time zones, leap seconds or daylight-saving changes. The tool also does not decide paid-break eligibility, overtime thresholds, minimum reporting units, attendance policy or legal compensation. Keep the original records when the calculation supports payroll, billing, compliance or a contract.
