Minutes to Decimal Hours Formula
Divide the total minutes by 60. The quotient is the duration expressed in decimal hours.
This relationship follows the standard definitions of the minute and hour. The NIST SI reference lists 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour. The conversion is the same in every country and currency.
Worked example: 135 minutes to hours
The whole-number portion is 2 hours. The remaining 0.25 hour is multiplied by 60:

Convert Minutes to Hours and Minutes
Use division with a remainder when you want clock-style hours and minutes instead of a decimal. Divide the total whole minutes by 60. The whole quotient gives complete hours, and the remainder gives minutes.
Remaining minutes = total minutes − (complete hours × 60)
For 250 minutes, the complete-hour count is 4 because 4 × 60 = 240. The remainder is 10 minutes. The result is 4 hours 10 minutes, written as 04:10. If the entered value includes a fraction of a minute, multiply that fraction by 60 to recover seconds.
Extended H:MM:SS notation does not wrap after 24 hours. A result of 1,500 minutes appears as 25:00:00, not 01:00:00. This matters for timesheets, project logs and spreadsheet totals that span more than one day.

Decimal Hours and H:MM Are Different Formats
Digits after a decimal point represent tenths, hundredths and thousandths of one hour. Minutes after a colon use a base of 60. Confusing these formats is the most common conversion error.

Conversion and rounding are separate operations. Exact conversion changes the unit without changing the duration. Rounding changes the duration to a chosen interval.
- Nearest selects the closest interval. At an exact halfway point, this calculator rounds upward.
- Down moves to the previous interval. For example, 137 minutes rounded down to 15 minutes becomes 135 minutes.
- Up moves to the next interval. The same 137 minutes becomes 150 minutes.
The result shows the change in minutes and keeps exact decimal hours visible. This prevents a rounded answer from looking like an exact conversion. Six-minute increments align with tenths of an hour, while 15-minute increments align with quarter-hours.

Converting Large Minute Totals to Days
Divide minutes by 1,440 to express the duration as decimal days. For example, 3,600 minutes equals 2.5 days, 60 hours, or 60:00:00. A decimal day is a fixed 24-hour duration, not a calendar date calculation.
Do not use a fixed minute conversion for calendar months or years. Months vary from 28 to 31 days, and leap years add a day. Use a date calculator when the question depends on named calendar dates, time zones or daylight-saving transitions.
