How to Use This Net Carb Calculator
- Find the serving size and the Total Carbohydrate line on a U.S.-style Nutrition Facts label.
- Enter total carbohydrate, dietary fiber and total sugar alcohol grams for one labeled serving.
- If the package identifies erythritol, enter the amount included within total sugar alcohol. Add separately disclosed allulose.
- Enter the number of servings you ate or plan to eat. A half serving is 0.5, while one and a half servings is 1.5.
- Select a primary estimate method and choose Calculate Net Carbs. Review all three estimates and the unchanged total-carbohydrate value.
Use grams from the same serving column. Do not mix the per-serving total carbohydrate from one column with fiber or sugar alcohol from an entire-container column. If a product has a dual-column label, choose one column and use it consistently.
What Are Net Carbs?
Net carbs is an informal term used to describe the portion of total carbohydrate left after selected components are deducted. The idea is that dietary fiber and some low-digestible sweeteners may affect digestion and blood glucose differently from sugars and starches. The problem is that packages, apps and diet plans do not always deduct the same components.
On a U.S. Nutrition Facts label, Total Carbohydrate is the regulated value. It includes dietary fiber and, when present, carbohydrate components such as sugars and sugar alcohols. Net carbohydrate does not replace that line. In February 2026, the American Diabetes Association explained that no FDA-approved net-carb definition exists and recommended using Total Carbohydrate to understand carbohydrate intake.
Net Carb Calculator Formulas
This tool compares three formulas. Every input is entered per labeled serving, and the chosen serving multiplier is applied after the per-serving estimate is calculated.
Ingredient-adjusted estimate = total carbohydrate − fiber − allulose − erythritol − 50% of other sugar alcohols
Full-subtraction estimate = total carbohydrate − fiber − allulose − all sugar alcohols
“Other sugar alcohols” means total declared sugar alcohol minus the erythritol amount entered. The 50% adjustment is a deliberately simple comparison assumption. It is not an FDA rule and cannot capture the different absorption and energy values of maltitol, sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol and other polyols. The full-subtraction method mirrors a common package or diet-app calculation, but it can understate the carbohydrate effect of partly absorbed sugar alcohols.
Worked net carb example
Suppose one serving declares 25 g Total Carbohydrate, 8 g Dietary Fiber, 6 g Sugar Alcohol and 2 g allulose. The ingredient list or package states that 4 of the 6 sugar-alcohol grams are erythritol. That leaves 2 g of other sugar alcohols.
Ingredient-adjusted estimate = 10 g per serving
The fiber-only result is 17 g. The full-subtraction result is 9 g. If two servings are eaten, those estimates become 34 g, 20 g and 18 g. Total carbohydrate becomes 50 g. Showing the range makes the method choice visible instead of hiding it behind one precise-looking number.

The calculator never labels one method as medically correct. Choose a formula only when you understand why its deductions fit your purpose. For medication, insulin dosing, diabetes management or a prescribed diet, use the method given by your qualified care team.
Read the Nutrition Facts Label Correctly
Start with Total Carbohydrate
Do not start with Total Sugars or Added Sugars. Total sugars are a subset of total carbohydrate and do not include all starch or fiber. Added sugars are a further subset. A product can have little added sugar and still contain substantial carbohydrate from flour, starch, milk sugar, fruit sugar or other ingredients.
Use values from one serving basis
The nutrient amounts next to the label serving size are not always the amounts in the whole package. If a container has 2.5 servings and you eat it all, enter 2.5 servings. The tool multiplies total carbohydrate and every estimate by the same value. It accepts decimal servings so you do not have to round your portion to a whole package.
Check whether sugar alcohol is declared
Sugar Alcohol is a voluntary sub-line in many situations under U.S. labeling rules. It becomes required in certain claim situations, but some products may not disclose a separate amount. Do not guess a sugar-alcohol value from Total Sugars. Enter zero when the package does not provide enough information, or ask the manufacturer for product-specific data.
Dietary Fiber and Total Carbohydrate
Federal labeling rules define dietary fiber as qualifying non-digestible soluble and insoluble carbohydrates with three or more monomeric units, plus lignin intrinsic and intact in plants. Certain isolated or synthetic non-digestible carbohydrates also qualify when the FDA has determined that they have beneficial physiological effects.
Fiber types differ. A net-carb subtraction treats every declared fiber gram the same for arithmetic, but it does not predict fermentation, gastrointestinal response, satiety or blood glucose. A food rich in beans, vegetables or intact whole grains is also nutritionally different from a processed product that adds isolated fiber to reduce a front-label net-carb claim.
Sugar Alcohols Are Not All the Same
Sugar alcohols, also called polyols, include erythritol, maltitol, sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol and others. The FDA notes that they are generally lower in calories than sugar and do not cause the same sudden blood-glucose increase as sugar. That broad statement does not mean every polyol has zero energy or an identical physiological effect.
Erythritol is separated in this calculator because it is handled differently from other polyols in many net-carb formulas. Other sugar alcohols are grouped because a food label often supplies only one combined number. The ingredient-adjusted method deducts half of that remaining group to avoid pretending it is either fully absorbed or completely unavailable. Product-specific digestion still cannot be calculated from a standard label.
Polyols can cause gas, bloating or diarrhea in some people, especially at higher amounts. A lower net-carb number does not show gastrointestinal tolerance. Serving size, the specific polyol and the rest of the meal all matter.
How Allulose Is Handled
Allulose is a rare sugar, not a sugar alcohol. Under current FDA guidance, it remains included in Total Carbohydrate. The agency exercises enforcement discretion so manufacturers may exclude it from Total Sugars and Added Sugars, and it allows a general energy factor of 0.4 kcal per gram when calories are calculated.
This calculator deducts separately disclosed allulose in its ingredient-adjusted and full-subtraction estimates. That choice mirrors common net-carb arithmetic. It does not turn the result into an FDA value, and it does not mean the Nutrition Facts Total Carbohydrate line is wrong.
U.S. and International Labels Can Differ
This calculator is designed around a U.S.-style label where Total Carbohydrate includes declared dietary fiber. Some countries present “carbohydrate” using a different convention, with fiber listed separately and already excluded from the carbohydrate number. Subtracting fiber again would double-count the deduction.
Before using a non-U.S. label, check the local labeling definition. If the displayed carbohydrate already excludes fiber, do not enter fiber into this U.S.-style formula. Package terminology such as carbs, available carbohydrate, glycemic carbohydrate and carbohydrate by difference is not interchangeable across jurisdictions.
Net Carbs Do Not Predict Blood Glucose
Blood-glucose response varies with the carbohydrate type, food structure, portion, preparation, meal composition, medications, activity, digestion and individual physiology. Two foods with the same calculated net carbs may produce different responses. A label also uses rounding rules, so its component grams are not laboratory-precision inputs.
The American Diabetes Association advises looking at Total Carbohydrate rather than relying on an unstandardized net-carb claim. This matters most when carbohydrate counting guides insulin or medication. An online calculator should never change a dose or replace the plan supplied by a clinician or registered dietitian.
Does a Low Net-Carb Number Mean a Food Is Healthy?
No. Net carbs do not describe protein quality, types of fat, sodium, vitamins, minerals, total calories, processing or portion size. A snack engineered with isolated fiber and sweeteners may show fewer net carbs than its total carbohydrate, yet it is not automatically more nutritious than fruit, beans, vegetables or intact whole grains.
Likewise, “keto,” “low carb” and “net carb” are not standardized FDA nutrient-content claims. Read the full Nutrition Facts panel and ingredient list. Compare products on the nutrients and food qualities that matter for your needs, not one front-of-package number.
Calculator Accuracy and Rounding
The arithmetic is exact for the numbers entered and the selected formula. The inputs are not exact. Nutrition labels round declared nutrients, recipes and ingredients vary, and the serving consumed may differ from the labeled serving. Separate rounded components can occasionally add to more than total carbohydrate.
If deductions exceed total carbohydrate, the calculator displays zero rather than a negative carb value and adds a warning. This clamp prevents a nonsensical output, but it does not repair an inconsistent label or prove that the food contains zero physiologically available carbohydrate.
