Percentage Difference Formula

Percentage difference compares the absolute distance between two values with their average size. For nonnegative values, add the two values and divide by two to find their average. For signed values, this calculator averages their absolute magnitudes so the reference stays nonnegative.

Percentage difference = |A − B| ÷ ((|A| + |B|) ÷ 2) × 100

The same formula can be written without a nested division:

Percentage difference = 200 × |A − B| ÷ (|A| + |B|)

  • Relative difference rate = Absolute difference ÷ Average magnitude

Worked Example: Compare 80 and 100

Suppose two measurements are 80 and 100. Their absolute difference is 20. Their average is 90. Divide the gap by 90, then multiply by 100.

|80 − 100| ÷ ((80 + 100) ÷ 2) × 100 = 20 ÷ 90 × 100 = 200/9% ≈ 22.222222%

The exact percentage difference is 200/9%. At six decimal places, it is approximately 22.222222%. Reversing the inputs gives the same absolute gap, average and answer.

Why Percentage Difference Uses an Average

When neither number is a baseline, dividing by only the first or second value would give that value special status. The average provides a shared reference built from both measurements. This makes the result symmetric.

For 80 and 100, dividing the 20-unit gap by 80 gives 25%. Dividing it by 100 gives 20%. Both are directional comparisons. Dividing by the average of 90 gives about 22.222222%, which treats both values equally.

Percentage Difference Versus Percentage Change

Percentage change is directional. It compares a new value with an original value and divides the change by the original. Swapping the values changes the baseline and usually changes the result.

Percentage difference is non-directional. It uses the absolute gap and average of both magnitudes. Use it for two peer measurements, estimates, prices or results when neither one is the official starting point.

Percentage Difference Versus Percent Error

Percent error needs an accepted, theoretical or reference value. It divides the absolute error by the magnitude of that accepted value. The observed value and accepted value have different roles.

Percent error = |Observed − Accepted| ÷ |Accepted| × 100

Use percentage difference when the two values have equal standing. Use percent error when one value is the standard used to judge the other. Labeling a reference measurement as a peer value changes the denominator and may hide the error rate you intended to report.

Percentage Difference Versus Percentage Points

If the inputs are already percentages, direct subtraction gives a percentage-point difference. A rate of 45% versus 55% differs by 10 percentage points. Their relative percentage difference is 20% because the average rate is 50% and 10 ÷ 50 × 100 = 20%.

State which measure you are using. “A 10% difference” is not the same claim as “a 10-percentage-point gap.” The first describes a relative comparison. The second describes direct subtraction between rates.

Zero, Equal and Negative Values

Both values are equal and nonzero

The absolute gap is zero, so the percentage difference is 0%. This applies to equal positive values and equal negative values because their magnitudes match.

Both values are zero

The formula becomes 0 divided by 0. That expression is undefined, so this calculator does not invent a finite percentage. You may state that the raw values are equal, but the relative percentage difference has no defined denominator.

One value is zero

If the other value is nonzero, the percentage difference is 200%. For 0 and 25, the gap is 25 and the average magnitude is 12.5. Dividing 25 by 12.5 gives 2, or 200%.

Both values are negative

This calculator uses magnitudes in the average denominator. For −40 and −60, the gap is 20 and the average magnitude is 50, so the percentage difference is 40%. This avoids a negative denominator.

The values have opposite signs

Two nonzero values with opposite signs produce 200%. Their absolute gap equals the sum of their magnitudes. Confirm that a percentage comparison across zero makes sense for the subject, especially for temperature scales, balances or net profit and loss.

Symmetry and the 0% to 200% Range

Under the average-magnitude formula, every defined result for real numbers lies between 0% and 200%. Equal nonzero values produce 0%. A zero paired with a nonzero value, or two values on opposite sides of zero, produces 200%.

This bound follows from the triangle inequality: |A − B| cannot exceed |A| + |B|. Because the formula multiplies the gap by 200 and divides by that sum, the percentage cannot exceed 200%. This bounded scale is useful when signed values are allowed, but you should still explain the sign context.

Practical Percentage Difference Examples

Repeated measurements

Two instruments record 49.5 and 50.5 units under comparable conditions. The absolute gap is 1 and the average is 50. Their percentage difference is 2%. This measures agreement between the readings, not accuracy against a certified standard.

Supplier quotations

Two comparable quotations are 12,000 and 13,500 units. The gap is 1,500 and the average is 12,750. The percentage difference is approximately 11.764706%. Check taxes, quantities, delivery terms and specifications before treating the prices as comparable.

Website or campaign metrics

Two peer reports show 8,400 and 9,100 sessions. The percentage difference is about 8%. Before interpreting the result, confirm the same date range, time zone, channel rules, consent settings and bot filters.

Laboratory or production checks

Two batches produce measurements of 98 and 102. Their average is 100 and their absolute gap is 4, so the percentage difference is 4%. A tolerance decision still depends on the relevant method, standard and uncertainty.

Exact Fractions and Rounding

Some percentage differences repeat as decimals. Comparing 80 and 100 gives the exact result 200/9%, whose decimal expansion repeats. The calculator converts accepted inputs to reduced fractions and performs the comparison with integer-backed arithmetic.

Rounding occurs only in the displayed decimal. An approximation mark appears when the chosen number of places cannot show the exact value. The exact percentage and exact intermediate values remain available. Keep enough precision for the task, then round once at the reporting stage.

When Percentage Difference Is Not Enough

A percentage difference summarizes two numbers. It does not show variation across repeated observations. For a dataset, you may need a mean, standard deviation, confidence interval or another method that accounts for sample size and spread.

For measurement agreement, some standards use relative percent difference, coefficient of variation or method-specific limits. For business reporting, use the baseline-based percentage change when one period comes before the other. Choose the formula from the question and domain rules, not from the size of the preferred answer.
