How to Use This Recipe Nutrition Calculator
- Enter the actual number of servings produced by the finished recipe. Add a serving description if it helps you portion the batch consistently.
- Add the finished batch weight when available. This unlocks nutrition per 100 g and an estimated weight per serving.
- Create one row for each ingredient record. Name the exact food and preparation state, such as cooked brown rice or drained canned beans.
- Define the data unit. It may be 100 g from a food database, one package serving, one item or another measured amount.
- Enter how many data units the recipe uses. Decimals and common fractions are accepted. Then copy calories and nutrient values for one data unit.
- Select Calculate Recipe Nutrition. Review batch totals, per-serving values, optional per-100 g values, coverage and quality checks.
Use nutrients from the same source column and basis. If calories come from 100 g, the fat, carbohydrate, protein and sodium values in that row must also describe 100 g. Mixing per-serving calories with per-100 g macros creates a result that looks precise but has no consistent meaning.
Recipe Nutrition Calculator Formula
Each ingredient starts with nutrient values for one data unit. Multiply each nutrient by the number of units used. Add the ingredient results to obtain the recipe total, then divide by the actual serving count.
Recipe nutrient total = sum of all ingredient nutrient amounts
Nutrient per serving = recipe nutrient total ÷ finished servings
Nutrient per 100 g = recipe nutrient total ÷ finished weight in grams × 100
Calculations retain full precision until display. Calories are shown to one decimal when needed, gram nutrients to one decimal and milligram nutrients to a practical whole number. This page does not apply Nutrition Facts label rounding because it produces a planning estimate, not a regulated package label.
Worked Recipe Nutrition Example
Assume a smoothie uses one medium banana record, two one-cup milk records and one two-tablespoon peanut-butter record. The recipe makes two glasses and weighs 700 g after blending. The example values are illustrative, so you should replace them with your own products or selected food records.

The full batch contains 539 kcal. Dividing by two gives 269.5 kcal per glass. Dividing the batch by 700 g and multiplying by 100 gives 77 kcal per 100 g. Protein, carbohydrate, fat, sodium and every other entered nutrient follow the same multiplier, sum and division sequence.
Choose the Right Ingredient Record
The arithmetic is simple. Record selection creates most of the uncertainty. A raw ingredient can differ from its boiled, baked, fried, drained or reconstituted form. Water gain lowers nutrients per 100 g, while evaporation concentrates them. Draining can remove liquid, sodium, sugar or fat. Trimming changes the edible portion.
For packaged foods, use the label for the exact brand and version. Compare serving size, package size and preparation instructions. For basic foods, USDA FoodData Central provides several data types, including Foundation Foods, survey foods and branded records. Record the food description and data basis so you can reproduce the calculation later.
- Match raw data to raw ingredients and cooked data to cooked ingredients.
- Use the edible amount. Exclude peel, bones, shells or discarded liquid when the record does.
- Choose the correct fat level, sweetened version, fortification and brand.
- Keep all values in one row on the same basis.
- Do not treat a similarly named food as an exact substitute.
Data Units, Fractions and Ingredient Amounts
The data unit separates nutrition data from kitchen quantity. If a database gives nutrients per 100 g and your recipe uses 250 g, the multiplier is 2.5. If a label gives nutrients per 30 g serving and you use 45 g, the multiplier is 45 divided by 30, or 1.5. If a recipe uses half of one labeled serving, enter 0.5 or 1/2.
Cups, tablespoons and pieces do not have universal gram weights. A cup of chopped nuts, sifted flour and packed brown sugar have different masses. Use the package serving weight, an ingredient-specific conversion or a kitchen scale. The calculator deliberately avoids generic volume-to-weight conversion.
Actual Yield and Serving Size Matter
Per-serving nutrition depends on the finished yield, not the number of portions the original recipe promised. A batch intended for eight servings may produce seven larger bowls or ten smaller cups. Measure the final output and divide it consistently before calculating.
Serving size describes the amount used for the result. It is not a recommendation for how much anyone should eat. The FDA also explains that a labeled serving reflects an amount customarily consumed, rather than a personalized dietary recommendation. If people take different portions, multiply the per-serving estimate by the fraction or number of calculated servings they actually eat.
Finished weight improves comparisons. Weigh the empty container, weigh the filled container and subtract the container. Use the final cooked or prepared weight after expected draining, cooling or evaporation. Per-100 g values based on raw ingredient weights will be wrong when the final batch gains or loses substantial water.
Cooking Loss, Water Change and Nutrient Retention
Adding raw ingredient nutrients does not perfectly predict a cooked dish. Heat, light, oxygen, leaching and discarded liquid can change some vitamins and minerals. Fat may remain in a pan, water may evaporate and salt may move into discarded cooking water. Fortified products and naturally variable foods add more uncertainty.
This tool does not apply a universal cooking-retention factor. Retention varies by nutrient, food and method. When a prepared-food record closely matches your dish, it may provide a better estimate than raw records. For a custom recipe, describe the result as calculated from ingredient data and measured yield, not as laboratory analysis.
Calories from Labels Versus the 4-4-9 Check
The calculator treats entered calories as the primary energy value. A simple macro check multiplies protein by 4 kcal per gram, total carbohydrate by 4 and total fat by 9. Federal rules allow these general factors, but they also allow specific Atwater factors and adjusted treatment for nondigestible carbohydrate and sugar alcohols.
Entered calories and the macro check may differ because of specific food factors, fiber, sugar alcohols, organic acids, alcohol and label rounding. A large difference can also reveal mixed serving bases or a data-entry error. The quality panel flags a substantial mismatch but never replaces the entered calorie total.
How Percent Daily Value Is Calculated
Percent Daily Value shows how much one calculated serving contributes to a general U.S. daily reference. The current adult and child age-four-plus values include 78 g total fat, 20 g saturated fat, 300 mg cholesterol, 2,300 mg sodium, 275 g total carbohydrate, 28 g fiber, 50 g added sugars and 4,700 mg potassium.
The result uses unrounded calculated nutrient amounts and displays a whole percentage. Total sugars have no established Daily Value. Protein percentage is not shown because official protein %DV can require protein-quality correction in specific labeling situations. FDA describes 5% DV or less as low and 20% DV or more as high, but those guides do not decide whether a full recipe is healthy or suitable for one person.
Why Blank Nutrients Stay Unknown
A blank field is not the same as zero. If one ingredient lacks sodium data, the known sodium sum is only a minimum. Showing it as the complete recipe total would understate the result. This calculator labels such output as “at least,” reports how many ingredient rows supplied the nutrient and withholds %DV until coverage is complete.
Enter zero only when the source explicitly reports zero or the amount is known to be zero for the chosen basis. Remember that package labels use rounding. A displayed zero can still represent a small amount, so totals created from many rounded label servings may differ from laboratory analysis.
