Calculation steps

  1. Use height and waist in the same unit: 175 cm and 86 cm.
  2. Calculate height divided by waist: 175 / 86 = 2.034884.
  3. Apply the male RFM equation: 64 - 20 x 2.034884 = 23.302326%.
  4. Display the estimate as 23.3% and compare it with the male age 20 to 39 provisional reference band.
  5. With 75 kg entered, estimated fat mass is 17.5 kg and estimated fat-free mass is 57.5 kg.

How to Use This Body Fat Calculator

  1. Choose Relative Fat Mass or the classic Navy circumference equation.
  2. Select the published male or female equation set. These research models require one of two sex-specific constants.
  3. Enter age. Age selects a provisional comparison band but does not change either body-fat formula.
  4. Select metric or US units and measure at the exact sites shown beside each field.
  5. Enter weight if you want estimated fat mass and fat-free mass. Leave weight blank if you only need the percentage.
  6. Select “Estimate Body Fat,” then review the method, unrounded steps, reference note and limitations.

Use a flexible, non-stretch tape. Keep it level and snug without compressing the skin. Take two or three readings under similar conditions. If the readings differ, recheck the site and technique instead of choosing the smallest value.

What Does Body-Fat Percentage Mean?

Body-fat percentage estimates the share of total body weight represented by fat mass. The remainder is often called fat-free mass or lean body mass. It includes muscle, water, bone, organs and other non-fat tissue. Fat-free mass is not the same as muscle mass.

This page uses equations built from body measurements. It does not scan tissue and cannot show visceral fat, fat distribution or health status. A result with a decimal place may look exact, but tape position, breathing, posture, body shape and the population used to build an equation all affect the estimate.

Body Fat Calculation Methods

Relative Fat Mass, RFM

RFM was introduced in a cross-sectional study of American adults. It uses height and waist circumference in the same unit. The female equation adds 12 percentage points through a different constant.

Male RFM = 64 − 20 × (height ÷ waist)
Female RFM = 76 − 20 × (height ÷ waist)

For RFM, the research measurement protocol places the waist tape at the upper border of the iliac crest, or hip bone, after a normal exhale. Do not substitute the classic Navy male abdomen or female natural-waist site and expect the same result.

Classic Navy circumference equation

The classic Hodgdon–Beckett circumference method uses logarithms and inch-based coefficients. This calculator converts centimetres to inches before applying them. Using the published inch constants directly with centimetres produces the wrong result.

For the male equation, measure the abdomen at the navel and the neck just below the larynx. For the female equation, measure the smallest natural waist, the widest hip or gluteal point and the neck below the larynx. Use a normal relaxed exhale for abdominal measurements.

Important 2026 U.S. Navy Method Update

The classic neck, waist and hip equation on this page is not the current official U.S. Navy Body Composition Assessment. The June 2026 Navy Guide 4 first uses a waist-to-height screen. If Step 2 is required, it uses height minus waist plus body weight and sex-specific lookup tables. An official result requires authorized measurement and Navy systems.

Use the classic equation only as a general historical tape estimate. Do not use it to predict enlistment, retention, fitness-test or waiver outcomes. Current rules, rounding and authorized measurement procedures control official decisions.

Worked Body Fat Examples

RFM example

A man with height 175 cm and waist 86 cm has a height-to-waist ratio of 2.034884. The equation is 64 − 20 × 2.034884 = 23.302326%. The calculator displays 23.3%. If body weight is 75 kg, estimated fat mass is 75 × 0.23302326 = 17.5 kg and fat-free mass is about 57.5 kg.

Classic Navy tape example

For a man who is 70 in tall with a 36 in abdomen and 15 in neck, the circumference difference is 21 in. Applying the classic equation gives approximately 21.2516%, displayed as 21.3%. Weight does not enter this percentage equation. It is used only after the percentage is calculated to estimate fat and fat-free mass.

Provisional Adult Reference Bands

The calculator uses provisional, BMI-linked research bands to give the number context. They are not universal healthy-body-fat ranges. The bands vary by age and equation set, and the table does not provide a category for adults aged 80 or older.

A value below the displayed band is not automatically unsafe, and a value inside it does not prove good health. Training background, age, menstrual and hormonal factors, illness, medicines, ethnicity, body shape and measurement error require context that a four-band table cannot supply.

Fat Mass and Fat-Free Mass Formulas

Estimated fat mass = body weight × body-fat percentage ÷ 100
Estimated fat-free mass = body weight − estimated fat mass

If weight is 75 kg and estimated body fat is 23.3%, fat mass is about 17.5 kg and fat-free mass is about 57.5 kg. These values inherit every error in the percentage estimate. They should not be treated as direct measurements of fat or muscle.

How to Measure More Consistently

  • Measure height barefoot, standing upright with the head level.
  • Use a non-stretch tape and keep it parallel to the floor.
  • Keep the tape in contact with skin without pulling it into soft tissue.
  • Measure the waist or abdomen after a normal relaxed exhale. Do not suck in the stomach.
  • Measure the neck below the larynx with shoulders relaxed and avoid the trapezius muscles.
  • For the classic female equation, measure the natural waist and widest hip as separate values.
  • Repeat measurements at the same time of day and with the same protocol when tracking a trend.

Do not average unrelated methods. Each equation defines and samples the body differently. For tracking, one consistent method and protocol is usually more informative than switching tools to obtain a preferred number.

Accuracy and Important Limitations

Research on circumference methods shows useful group-level associations but meaningful individual error. Validation findings vary by sex, body-fat level and population. Tape equations may overestimate some lean people, underestimate some people with higher body fat and poorly detect small short-term changes.

Hydration, recent meals, exercise, breathing, bloating, edema, loose skin, pregnancy, postpartum changes, muscularity, unusual body proportions and measurement placement can change the result. The equations use binary sex-specific groups from their source research and do not provide a separately validated trans or nonbinary equation.

Do not use this adult calculator for children or teenagers, during pregnancy, or when illness or treatment substantially changes fluid status or body shape. A clinician, registered dietitian or trained body-composition professional can choose a method suited to the individual question.

Common Body Fat Calculator Mistakes

  • Applying the inch-based Navy coefficients directly to centimetres.
  • Using natural-waist circumference in an RFM field that expects the upper iliac-crest site.
  • Using the male Navy navel site for the female Navy natural-waist input.
  • Pulling the tape tight enough to compress skin or leaving it loose and tilted.
  • Reading fat-free mass as muscle mass.
  • Treating a provisional band as a diagnosis or personal target.
  • Averaging several methods that use different assumptions.
  • Using the legacy Navy result as an official 2026 military BCA result.

Calculation Method and Review Sources

The RFM equation and its source population were reviewed against the original Scientific Reports RFM study. The classic circumference equations, validation limits and short-term tracking issues were checked against a 2023 circumference-method study and a 2022 DXA comparison study.

The current military-method warning was reviewed against the official June 2026 U.S. Navy Guide 4. Provisional age-and-sex bands were checked against the Gallagher body-fat range study. These references support method transparency; they do not turn a browser estimate into a clinical measurement.

What is the difference between fat-free mass and muscle mass?

Fat-free mass includes muscle, water, bone, organs and all other non-fat tissue. It is broader than muscle mass, so the calculator’s fat-free result must not be read as estimated muscle alone.
