How to Use This Science GPA Calculator
Prepare the official transcript, the receiving program's course-subject guide and its grade-conversion instructions before starting. A science GPA estimate is only as accurate as those policy choices.
- Choose a course-set reference. Record whether you are estimating a custom institutional average, an AMCAS-style BCPM GPA, a CASPA-style science GPA or another service's calculation.
- Choose the grade input. Use letter grades with the editable map, or direct grade points when the official conversion has already been determined.
- Choose the weighting method. Use GPA credits for the usual quality-points calculation. Count each course once only for a deliberate equal-course estimate.
- Classify every course. Select Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Other Science or Other or Unclassified after checking the governing subject guide.
- Set course treatment. Mark Include only when the target policy places that course and grade attempt in the science GPA. Exclude rows the policy leaves out.
- Calculate and verify. Check each contribution, category subtotal, exact ratio, displayed precision and copied record against the official instructions.
The course-set menu is documentation, not an automatic classifier. Selecting AMCAS does not include mathematics for you. Selecting CASPA does not remove it. This deliberate design prevents a broad preset from silently changing a borderline or interdisciplinary course.
Science GPA Formula
First determine which courses belong in the target science set. For each included graded course, multiply its grade-point value by its GPA credits. These products are quality points.
If every course intentionally counts once, replace each credit value with 1. The result becomes the arithmetic mean of the included grade points. Equal weighting is not interchangeable with a transcript calculation when one course carries four credits and another carries one.
The calculator stores accepted decimal values as reduced integer ratios. It multiplies, adds and divides those ratios without floating-point drift. Rounding or truncation occurs once at the final display. Category subtotals use the same exact course values.
Which Courses Count Toward Science GPA?
There is no single science-course list for every purpose. The AMCAS BCPM group uses biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics. AMCAS tells applicants to classify by the primary content of the course, not simply the department offering it. CASPA uses a different science grouping. Its published science GPA categories include Biology/Zoology, Inorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics and Other Science, while Mathematics appears in its non-science group.

Course titles such as neuroscience, statistics, engineering, nutrition, public health, psychology or computer science do not guarantee one treatment across systems. For AMCAS, review the primary course content. For a Liaison service, use its standardized subject list and instructions for uncertain courses. Ask the program or an academic adviser when the required method still leaves the classification unclear.
Worked Science GPA Examples
Example 1: Credit-weighted science GPA
Biology has an A worth 4.0 points and 4 credits. General Chemistry has a B+ worth 3.3 points and 4 credits. Physics has an A- worth 3.7 points and 3 credits. Calculus has a B worth 3.0 points and 3 credits. Assume the chosen framework includes all four.
The result displays 3.52 at two decimals with round-half-up reporting. The exact ratio is 493/140. Removing Calculus under a framework that excludes mathematics would change both the numerator and denominator, producing 40.3 divided by 11, or about 3.66.
Example 2: Equal-course estimate
Assume three included laboratory science courses use grade points 4.0, 3.3 and 2.7 and each course counts once. Add 10.0 points and divide by three.
This result ignores differences in credits. Use it only when the intended method gives every course equal influence. A one-credit laboratory and a four-credit lecture usually should not be forced into equal weights when official GPA credits are available.
Course Classification and Category Labels
The six category labels keep your work auditable. Biology covers the biological-science group you verified. Chemistry records chemistry, organic chemistry or biochemistry when the target guide places it there. Physics records physics. Mathematics stays separate because some services include it in science GPA and others do not. Other Science is available only when the governing framework recognizes a science category outside those core groups. Other or Unclassified flags a course that needs a policy decision.
The calculator never interprets a title. A statistics course might be mathematics in one framework, a subject-specific course in another or excluded from a particular science GPA. AMCAS may classify a neuroscience course from its primary content, while a Liaison service may direct you through its subject list and offering-department guidance. The category field records your decision after the correct policy check.
Category subtotals do not create separate official GPAs. They show the courses, weight, quality points and within-category average entered in this estimate. Use them to spot a mistaken category, missing lab or unexpected credit value before copying the total.
Grades, Credits, Repeats and Exclusions
Centralized application services may convert transcript grades to their own standardized values. A school's transcript GPA therefore may differ from the GPA recalculated by an application service. Confirm the grade-conversion chart before editing the reference map or entering direct points.
Pass/fail, satisfactory/unsatisfactory, withdrawals, incompletes, audits, advanced-placement credit and other nonstandard marks need policy-specific treatment. A passing mark may earn credit without grade points and remain outside the GPA. A failing outcome may be handled differently. This calculator does not guess. Use Exclude only when the governing instructions omit the course from both science quality points and the science GPA denominator.
Repeated-course rules also vary. Some institutional GPAs replace an earlier attempt. A centralized service may include every attempt during verification. Enter each attempt the target calculation counts. Do not remove an earlier grade because a local transcript shows grade forgiveness unless the receiving service applies the same rule.
Use the credit value accepted by the target policy. Semester hours, quarter hours and unit conversions are not interchangeable. Convert units with the official application-service instructions before entry. Never mix semester and quarter values in one denominator without the required conversion.
Science GPA Precision and Rounding
Select two, three or four displayed decimals and either round half up or truncate. These options affect only the visible estimate. The exact reduced fraction, quality-point total, weight total and category calculations keep full accepted precision.
Match the reporting rule in the official instructions. Do not average rounded category GPAs or semester GPAs to rebuild a cumulative science GPA. Add the underlying science quality points and applicable credits, then divide once.
A displayed result such as 3.52 is not evidence that the official service will report the same value. Classification changes, standardized grade conversion, repeated attempts, academic-status grouping and verification adjustments may change the official calculation.
Common Science GPA Mistakes
- Using one universal course list. AMCAS, CASPA, other services and individual programs define science groups differently.
- Classifying from the department prefix alone. For AMCAS, primary course content controls the classification.
- Assuming mathematics always counts. It belongs in AMCAS BCPM but appears in CASPA's non-science group.
- Including a course because its title sounds scientific. Verify interdisciplinary and applied courses against the official guide.
- Ignoring credits. A four-credit course should have four times the influence of a one-credit course in a credit-weighted calculation.
- Using a transcript GPA instead of course data. Application services often recalculate from individual courses and standardized grades.
- Dropping repeated or failing attempts without authority. Follow the exact receiving-service rule.
- Mixing quarter and semester hours. Convert with the official method first.
- Rounding each course or category. Keep full values and round the final quotient once.
- Treating an estimate as verified. Only the school or application service creates the official reported GPA.

What is a science GPA?
A science GPA is a grade point average calculated from a defined group of science courses. The group is policy-specific. AMCAS uses a BCPM grouping, while CASPA publishes a different science-subject grouping.
How do I calculate science GPA?
Identify the included science courses, multiply each grade-point value by its applicable GPA credits, add the quality points and divide by the total included science credits.
Which courses count toward science GPA?
Use the official subject guide for the school, program or application service receiving the GPA. Do not assume every course with a science-related title belongs in the same group.
Does math count in science GPA?
It depends on the framework. AMCAS includes mathematics in BCPM. CASPA lists Mathematics in its non-science GPA group. Another institution may publish a different rule.
Does psychology count as science?
Psychology is not automatically part of every science GPA. Follow the target's classification basis. AMCAS asks you to use primary course content, while CASPA and other Liaison services use published subject lists and their instructions for uncertain courses.
Do science laboratory courses count?
A separately graded laboratory may count when the governing policy classifies it as science and assigns GPA credits. Enter the lab as its own row when it has a separate grade and credit value.
Do pass/fail science courses count?
Rules differ. A passing mark often carries no grade points, while a failing mark may receive another treatment. Include or exclude the course only after checking the official conversion instructions.
How should repeated science courses be entered?
Enter every attempt the target calculation includes. A local grade-replacement policy does not prove that a centralized application service will remove the earlier attempt.
Should science GPA use credits or equal course weight?
