A time calculator performs arithmetic with durations. Enter one value as Time A, enter another as Time B, then add them, subtract one from the other or find the absolute difference. The result is normalized so 75 seconds becomes 1 minute 15 seconds and 27 hours becomes 1 day 3 hours.

The tool also converts the answer into an extended clock format and totals in hours, minutes, seconds and decimal days. It works with elapsed quantities. It does not treat an entry such as 9:30 as a time of day, attach a date or apply a time zone.

How to Use This Time Calculator

  1. Enter the first duration under Time A. Days are optional. Hours may be greater than 23.
  2. Select addition, A minus B, B minus A or absolute difference.
  3. Enter the second duration under Time B.
  4. Keep minutes between 0 and 59. Keep seconds from 0 up to 59.999.
  5. Select how many decimal places to show for seconds. This controls display precision, not the basic operation.

  7. Use “Swap A and B” when you want to reverse a subtraction without retyping every field.
Quick check: Addition does not depend on input order. Subtraction does. If A is 2 hours and B is 5 hours, A − B is −3 hours, while B − A is 3 hours.

What This Time Calculator Measures

A duration tells you how long something lasts. Examples include 2 hours 15 minutes of travel, a 45-minute exercise session or 1 day 6 hours of machine runtime. Duration arithmetic combines or compares these quantities without needing a calendar date.

This page supports four operations:

  • Add A + B: combine two durations into one total.
  • Subtract A − B: remove Time B from Time A.
  • Subtract B − A: reverse the order of subtraction.
  • Absolute difference: show the non-negative distance between the two durations.

The conversion relationships are fixed. The NIST SI reference states that one minute is 60 seconds, one hour is 60 minutes or 3,600 seconds, and one day is 24 hours or 86,400 seconds.

Time Addition and Subtraction Formula

The safest method is to convert each duration to one base unit, perform the operation, then convert the answer back. This calculator uses milliseconds internally so entries with up to three decimal places in the seconds field remain precise.

Total seconds = (days × 86,400) + (hours × 3,600) + (minutes × 60) + seconds
Addition = total seconds A + total seconds B
Subtraction = total seconds A − total seconds B
Absolute difference = |total seconds A − total seconds B|

After the operation, divide the magnitude by 86,400 to find whole days. Divide the remainder by 3,600 for hours, then by 60 for minutes. The final remainder is seconds. If the original result is negative, the minus sign applies to the complete normalized duration.

Worked Time Addition Example

Assume Time A is 2 hours 45 minutes 30 seconds and Time B is 1 hour 30 minutes 45 seconds.

  • Time A in seconds = 2 × 3,600 + 45 × 60 + 30 = 9,930 seconds.
  • Time B in seconds = 1 × 3,600 + 30 × 60 + 45 = 5,445 seconds.
  • Combined time = 9,930 + 5,445 = 15,375 seconds.
  • 15,375 seconds = 4 hours 16 minutes 15 seconds.

The minutes and seconds cannot be added as ordinary decimal digits. Thirty seconds plus 45 seconds equals 75 seconds, which carries 1 minute and leaves 15 seconds. Forty-five minutes plus 30 minutes plus the carried minute equals 76 minutes, which carries 1 hour and leaves 16 minutes.

Worked Time Subtraction Example

Subtract 2 hours 50 minutes from 5 hours 20 minutes. Direct column subtraction requires borrowing because 20 minutes is smaller than 50 minutes.

  • Borrow 1 hour from 5 hours.
  • Four hours remain, and the minute column becomes 80 minutes.
  • 80 minutes − 50 minutes = 30 minutes.
  • The answer is 2 hours 30 minutes.

Converting to seconds gives the same result: 19,200 seconds − 10,200 seconds = 9,000 seconds. Dividing 9,000 by 3,600 gives 2.5 hours, or 2 hours 30 minutes.

How Negative Time Results Work

A negative duration appears when a subtraction removes more time than the first value contains. For example, 1 hour 15 minutes minus 2 hours equals −45 minutes. The minus sign applies to the whole result. It does not mean “−1 hour + 15 minutes.”

Use a signed subtraction when direction matters, such as planned time minus actual time. Use absolute difference when you only need the size of the gap. Absolute difference turns both A − B and B − A into the same non-negative result.

A negative result is mathematically valid. Whether it represents an overrun, deficit, lead or delay depends on how you defined Time A and Time B.

Carrying and Borrowing Time Units

Clock units use different bases. Seconds and minutes roll over at 60. Hours roll over into days at 24. This makes time arithmetic different from ordinary base-10 addition.

Extended HH:MM:SS Format

The result includes an extended clock display. Unlike a time-of-day clock, its hour field does not wrap after 23. A duration of 2 days 3 hours 4 minutes 5 seconds appears as 51:04:05 because 2 days contain 48 hours.

Use this format when a spreadsheet, log or report expects total hours. Use the day-based wording when a long duration is easier to read as calendar-sized blocks. Both displays represent the same elapsed quantity.

Seconds can include up to three decimal places. Selecting whole seconds rounds only the displayed normalized and clock values. Total-unit outputs retain useful precision, and the calculation uses the entered value to the nearest millisecond.

Duration Versus Time of Day

A duration and a clock reading are different data types. “3 hours 20 minutes” is a duration. “3:20 PM” is a time of day. Adding two durations is straightforward. Adding 3 hours 20 minutes to 11:30 PM requires a reference date and produces 2:50 AM on the following day.

Use this tool when both entries describe elapsed amounts. Use a start-and-end time calculator when you have clock readings. Use a date-and-time calculator when an interval crosses dates, months, years or daylight-saving transitions. A time zone also matters when the start and end occur in different locations.

Decimal Hours and Decimal Days

Total hours express the full result as one base-10 number. Four hours 30 minutes equals 4.5 hours because 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5. It does not equal 4.30 hours. Total minutes and total seconds use the same idea with different base units.

Decimal days divide total seconds by 86,400. A 12-hour duration equals 0.5 day. A 36-hour duration equals 1.5 days. This output is useful for rates, averages and comparisons, but a decimal day does not describe a specific date or account for civil-time changes.

Adding Time in Excel or Google Sheets

If A2 and B2 contain real spreadsheet durations, use =A2+B2 to add them and =A2-B2 to subtract. Format the result as [h]:mm:ss when the total may exceed 24 hours. The square brackets prevent the hour display from wrapping back to zero after each full day.

Spreadsheet date systems may display negative durations as hashes or an error-like value even when the arithmetic is correct. Store total seconds in a numeric column when signed durations are required, or use a separate sign and absolute duration. Confirm how your spreadsheet application handles dates before changing its date system.

Common Time Calculation Mistakes

  • Treating minutes as decimals: 2 hours 30 minutes is 2.5 hours, not 2.30 hours.
  • Entering 90 in the minutes field: use 1 hour 30 minutes so the input stays unambiguous.
  • Reversing subtraction: A − B and B − A have opposite signs unless both values are equal.
  • Dropping the negative sign: choose absolute difference only when direction does not matter.
  • Using clock readings as durations: 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM need start-and-end time logic.
  • Ignoring dates or time zones: civil-time intervals may cross midnight or a daylight-saving transition.
  • Rounding each component too early: keep available seconds through the operation, then round the final display.
  • Letting a 24-hour display wrap: use extended hours or a day breakdown for long totals.

For duration-unit conversion, one day equals 24 hours or 86,400 seconds. A local civil day can be shorter or longer during a daylight-saving transition, which requires date and time-zone data.
