Weight Loss Percentage Formula
Weight loss percentage compares the amount lost with the starting weight. The starting value belongs in the denominator. Both weights must use the same unit.
Weight loss percentage = (weight lost / starting weight) x 100
If current weight is higher than starting weight, the first formula produces a negative loss. This calculator avoids a confusing negative “weight loss” result and reports the change as a positive weight increase percentage instead. If both readings match, it reports no change.
Worked example: 90 kg to 85.5 kg
A person starts at 90 kg and later weighs 85.5 kg. The difference is 4.5 kg. Divide 4.5 by 90, then multiply by 100:
Weight loss percentage = (4.5 / 90) x 100 = 5%
The result is 5% weight loss. Current weight is also 95% of starting weight because 85.5 divided by 90 equals 0.95. These are two ways to describe the same change.

This directional wording prevents a common reporting error. A result of “-5% weight loss” can be read two ways. “5% weight increase” states the change directly.
Why Starting Weight Changes the Percentage
The same number of kilograms or pounds represents a different percentage for people with different starting weights. A 5 kg loss from 100 kg is 5%. A 5 kg loss from 80 kg is 6.25%. The amount is identical, but the denominator differs.
Use a baseline that matches the period you want to describe. A program start, medication start, clinical assessment or chosen tracking date may each create a different valid baseline. Label the baseline clearly when sharing a result. Do not quietly switch from the original starting weight to a newer value, because doing so resets the percentage.

Amount lost answers “how many kilograms or pounds changed?” Percentage lost answers “how large was that change relative to the starting body weight?” Neither replaces the other.

Goal Progress Formula
When you enter a goal below the starting weight, the calculator compares the change already observed with the full entered change. It does not use the goal as a clinical recommendation.
Loss so far = starting weight - current weight
Goal progress = (loss so far / goal loss) x 100
For a start of 90 kg, a current weight of 85.5 kg and a goal of 81 kg, loss so far is 4.5 kg and the full entered change is 9 kg. Goal progress is 50%. A value above 100% means current weight is below the entered goal. A negative value means current weight moved above the starting baseline.
Weekly Average Is a Description, Not a Forecast
With elapsed time, the tool divides total change by the number of weeks. Ten weeks and a 4.5 kg loss produces an average of 0.45 kg per week. It also divides the total percentage by the same time, producing 0.5% of starting weight per week.
The calculation does not mean the same amount changed every week. Early changes may include glycogen and water. Menstrual-cycle timing, sodium, carbohydrate intake, bowel contents, hydration, illness and measurement conditions can move scale weight without showing a matching tissue change.
The CDC describes about 1 to 2 pounds per week as a gradual, steady pace associated with better maintenance for people trying to lose weight. This broad public reference is not a diagnosis or a personal limit. Faster observed change, medication use, surgery, medical conditions and unplanned loss require individual context.
What 5% and 10% Weight Loss Mean
Percentages such as 5% and 10% appear in public health guidance because they scale with the baseline. The NIDDK describes 5% to 10% of starting weight within six months as a common initial goal for many adults with overweight or obesity who are pursuing planned loss. The same percentage is not a universal target for every person.
The calculator’s reference table shows the weights corresponding to 1%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% below the entered start. These rows are arithmetic landmarks. They do not determine whether weight loss is needed, safe or beneficial. Age, growth, pregnancy, medical history, medicines, body composition and the reason for change all matter.
Planned and Unplanned Weight Loss Need Different Interpretation
Planned loss usually follows a deliberate change in diet, activity, treatment or another structured plan. Unplanned loss happens without trying. The same 5% result has a different meaning in these two situations.
The NHS advises medical review for continuing unintentional weight loss, especially when other symptoms are present. NHS malnutrition guidance also lists unintentional loss of 5% to 10% or more over three to six months as one possible warning sign. These references are screening context, not a diagnosis generated by this tool.
Seek qualified advice when loss was unexpected, keeps continuing, follows poor appetite, or occurs with weakness, digestive symptoms, pain, fever, swallowing difficulty or another concern. Do not wait for a particular percentage if you feel unwell.
How to Make Weight Readings More Comparable
- Use the same reliable scale on a firm, level surface.
- Measure at a similar time of day and under similar clothing conditions.
- Compare a multi-day or weekly trend when daily tracking is appropriate for you.
- Record the date and unit with each value. Do not mix pounds and kilograms.
- Note major changes in hydration, illness, travel, medicines or menstrual-cycle timing.
- Keep the original baseline if you want one continuous percentage for the full period.
Precision in the calculator cannot correct inconsistent inputs. Entering many decimal places does not make a home scale more accurate. The tool keeps full converted precision internally and rounds displayed weights sensibly.
What This Result Cannot Tell You
A change on the scale does not identify the proportions of fat, lean tissue, glycogen, water or digestive contents involved. Weight loss percentage is also different from percentage-point change in body fat. For example, moving from 30% body fat to 25% body fat is a five-percentage-point change, not automatically a 5% body-weight loss.
