Calculate Age From Date of Birth

Enter a birth date and the date on which you want to measure age.

Use the recorded calendar date. Birth time is not required.
This defaults to your device's current local date.
This setting affects only a February 29 birth date. Formal rules vary by jurisdiction and purpose.
The calculator uses February 28 as the non-leap-year anniversary for a February 29 birth date. Change the setting when your required rule uses March 1.
Exact chronological age 26 years, 6 months, 23 days From January 1, 2000 to July 24, 2026
Completed years 26
Completed months 318
Total weeks 1,385 weeks, 6 days
Total elapsed days 9,701
Date-only hours 232,824
Date-only minutes 13,969,440
Birth weekday Saturday
Next birthday January 1, 2027
Days until birthday 161 days
Age at next birthday 27 years
Progress through current age year 55.89%
55.89%

204 days of 365 days have passed since the last birthday.

Calculation point Calendar date Meaning
Birth date January 1, 2000 Starting date, excluded from elapsed-day count
Last birthday January 1, 2026 26 completed calendar years
Reference date July 24, 2026 6 months and 23 days after the last birthday
Next birthday January 1, 2027 Turns 27 after 161 days
Age = 26 completed years + 6 completed months + 23 remaining days. Total elapsed time = 9,701 days.

An age calculator finds the calendar difference between a date of birth and a reference date. It answers “How old am I?” in completed years, months and days, then gives supporting totals in months, weeks and days. You can use today's date or enter another date for a repeatable record.

This tool uses real Gregorian calendar months. It does not treat every year as 365 days or every month as 30 days. Leap years, month lengths and February 29 anniversaries receive separate handling. The result is chronological age, not a prediction about health, development or life expectancy.

How to Use the Age Calculator

  1. Enter the complete date of birth.
  2. Review the “Calculate age on” date. Select “Use Today” to refresh it from your device's current local date.
  3. If the birth date is February 29, choose whether a non-leap-year anniversary falls on February 28 or March 1 for this calculation.
  4. Select “Calculate Age.”
  5. Read the main years, months and days result.
  6. Review completed months, elapsed weeks, elapsed days, birth weekday and next-birthday details.
  7. Check the audit table when you need to see the last birthday and the exact reference date used.
Quick accuracy check: Confirm the birth year, month and day before using the result on a form. A one-digit year error changes every output, while a swapped month and day can create a valid but incorrect date.

What Exact Age Means

Exact chronological age is a calendar-based interval. The calculator first finds the largest number of completed birthday anniversaries. It then moves through completed calendar months and counts the remaining days. The result might be 26 years, 6 months and 23 days.

The word “completed” matters. A person remains 26 until the anniversary used for the twenty-seventh birthday arrives. Saying someone is “in their 27th year” describes the year of life underway, not the number of completed years normally entered as age.

Months have unequal lengths, so years, months and days are not independent fixed units. January has 31 days, April has 30, and February has 28 or 29. The tool advances across the actual calendar instead of converting elapsed days with an average year or month. If a target month has no matching day, the month step uses that target month's last calendar day. January 31 to February 28 therefore counts as one completed calendar month in a common year.

Age Calculation Formula

A simple year subtraction is only the first step:

Candidate years = reference year − birth year
Completed years = candidate years − 1 when the birthday has not occurred by the reference date
Exact age = completed years + completed calendar months + remaining elapsed days

After completed years are found, the calculator creates an anniversary anchor. It adds whole calendar months without moving past the reference date, then counts the remaining date boundaries as days. This sequence avoids assuming a fixed number of days per month.

Total elapsed days use a separate calculation:

Total elapsed days = reference date serial number − birth date serial number

The starting birth date is excluded from elapsed time. A birth date and reference date that are the same therefore produce zero years, zero months and zero days. Moving the reference to the next calendar date produces one elapsed day.

Worked Age Calculation Example

Use a birth date of January 1, 2000 and a reference date of July 24, 2026.

  • The twenty-sixth birthday occurred on January 1, 2026.
  • Six completed calendar months reach July 1, 2026.
  • Another 23 elapsed days reach July 24.
  • The exact chronological age is 26 years, 6 months and 23 days.
  • The elapsed-day total is 9,701 days.
  • The next birthday is January 1, 2027, which is 161 days after the reference date.

The same person is 318 completed calendar months old because 26 multiplied by 12 is 312, plus six additional completed months. Total weeks come from dividing 9,701 elapsed days by seven: 1,385 complete weeks with six days remaining.

Calendar Age vs Total Time Lived

The main age and the total-unit cards answer different questions. Calendar age mirrors how birthdays are usually stated. Total days and weeks measure elapsed date boundaries. Keep the distinction clear when copying a result.

Output Calculation Best use
Years, months and days Calendar anniversaries, then calendar months, then remaining days Forms, profiles and ordinary age statements
Completed months Completed years multiplied by 12, plus completed months Infant age, schedules and month-based records
Total weeks Elapsed days divided by seven Week-based tracking and comparisons
Total elapsed days Reference date minus birth date, with the start date excluded Milestones and exact day counts
Date-only hours and minutes Elapsed days multiplied by 24 or 1,440 Rough unit conversion when birth time is unknown

The result cards and copied result include date-only hour and minute equivalents. They assume midnight boundaries and do not claim to measure the exact moment since birth. To calculate age to the hour or minute, you would need a reliable birth time, reference time and time zone, plus rules for clock changes.

How Leap Years Affect Age

The Gregorian calendar adds February 29 in leap years. The U.S. Naval Observatory leap-year rule states that a year divisible by four is a leap year, except a century year must also be divisible by 400. The year 2000 was a leap year. The years 1900 and 2100 are not.

Leap days change elapsed-day totals after February in a leap year. They do not mean you should divide by 365.25 to state a person's age. Birthday anniversaries remain calendar events, so the tool counts completed anniversaries first.

February 29 Birthdays

A February 29 birthday has no matching date in a common year. Different rules use February 28 or March 1. This is not one universal technical choice. For example, Scotland's Age of Legal Capacity Act uses March 1 for the relevant anniversary in a non-leap year, while a Nevada identification rule uses February 28 for its stated purpose.

The selector makes the convention visible. Under the February 28 setting, someone born February 29, 2000 reaches 23 completed years on February 28, 2023. Under the March 1 setting, the same result on February 28 is 22 years, 11 months and 27 days, and 23 completed years begins on March 1.

Formal-age warning: Select the convention required by the authority, law, contract or program involved. A general calculator cannot decide which jurisdictional rule controls a legal threshold.

How the Next Birthday Countdown Works

The next-birthday card finds the selected anniversary on or after the reference date. If the reference date is the birthday itself, the countdown shows “Birthday today.” Otherwise, it counts elapsed calendar days from the reference date to the next anniversary.

The progress bar measures the portion of the current birthday-to-birthday cycle that has elapsed. This cycle can contain 365 or 366 days. It can also differ for a February 29 birth date because the selected non-leap-year convention changes the anniversary anchor.

The progress percentage is descriptive. It does not measure biological development, maturity or eligibility. It only divides the days passed since the last selected anniversary by the total days between that anniversary and the next one.

Calculate Age on a Past or Future Date

The reference date does not have to be today. Enter a past date to reproduce the age shown in an old record. Enter a future date to estimate age at an event, application deadline or planned milestone. The calculator blocks a reference date earlier than the birth date.

Examples include:

  • Checking age on a school admission cut-off date.
  • Finding age when an insurance policy started.
  • Recording a child's age at a past medical appointment.
  • Planning a future birthday or retirement milestone.
  • Comparing two records that used different reference dates.

For an official deadline, verify whether the governing rule uses the start of a birthday, the end of the previous day, an inclusive date count or another definition. The date entered here is a calendar reference, not a legal interpretation.

Date-Only Math and Time Zones

This calculator treats both inputs as plain Gregorian dates. It converts their calendar components to a stable day count and does not use the current clock time for elapsed-day arithmetic. That design avoids a common browser error where a date shifts to the previous or next day after a time-zone conversion.

The “Use Today” button reads the local calendar date shown by your device. If your device zone or clock is wrong, the selected date can also be wrong. For a record that must remain unchanged, enter the reference date directly and save it with the result.

The NIST unit reference defines one day used as a duration as 24 hours or 86,400 seconds. Date-only hour and minute equivalents use this fixed relationship. Civil clock time can still change during daylight-saving transitions, so those equivalents are not a substitute for birth-time arithmetic.

Common Age Calculation Mistakes

  • Subtracting years only: The birthday might not have occurred by the reference date.
  • Using 365 days for every year: Leap years make the elapsed-day total different.
  • Using 30 days for every month: Calendar months range from 28 to 31 days.
  • Counting the birth date as one full day: Elapsed age is zero on the starting date.
  • Confusing current age with the year of life: Someone aged 26 is living through their 27th year.
  • Ignoring February 29 policy: A non-leap-year anniversary can depend on the required rule.
  • Using an unverified device date: The Today button depends on the device's local calendar.
  • Treating a general result as legal proof: Eligibility rules and documentary requirements differ.

When to Verify the Result

A calculator is useful for planning and checking arithmetic. It is not an identity record. Use the date printed on the accepted birth certificate, passport or other required document when an authority requests proof.

Verify the controlling rule for school admissions, employment, insurance, pensions, licenses, sports categories, immigration, court matters and benefits. An organization might define a cut-off date, completed age, age band or February 29 anniversary differently. It might also require an official document even when the arithmetic is correct.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the calculator determine exact age?

It counts completed birthday anniversaries, then completed calendar months, then the remaining elapsed days. This produces a years, months and days result without treating every month or year as the same length.

What is my age today?

Enter your date of birth and select Use Today. The calculator reads your device's current local calendar date and returns your completed years, months and days on that date.

Does the age calculator handle leap years and February 29?

Yes. It applies Gregorian leap-year rules and lets a February 29 user choose February 28 or March 1 as the anniversary in a non-leap year.

Why can a February 29 age result vary?

Different jurisdictions and organizations use different non-leap-year anniversary rules. Changing the selector from February 28 to March 1 can change completed age around those dates.

Are the birth date and reference date both counted?

No. Elapsed time excludes the starting birth date. If both dates are the same, the result is zero days. The next calendar date is one elapsed day later.

How are total months, weeks and days calculated?

Total months are completed years multiplied by 12 plus completed months. Total weeks divide exact elapsed days by seven. Total days are the reference date's day number minus the birth date's day number.

Can I calculate age on a past or future date?

Yes. Enter the required reference date instead of today. It must be on or after the birth date and within the calculator's supported 1900 through 2200 range.

Is this result valid for legal or medical eligibility?

It provides calendar arithmetic only. Confirm the cut-off date, age definition, February 29 rule and accepted documents with the authority, clinician or program making the decision.

Why might another age calculator show a different answer?

Another tool might approximate months, include the starting date, use another February 29 convention or calculate from clock times. Compare the input dates and counting rules before comparing results.
