A birth year calculator works backward from a person's completed age on a known date. It answers questions such as “What year was I born?” or “Which birth year matches age 26 today?” The answer depends on whether the birthday has already occurred in the reference year.
If birthday timing is unknown, age often supports two adjacent years. This tool does not hide that uncertainty. It checks every valid Gregorian birth date that produces the entered completed age, then reports the oldest matching date, youngest matching date and all possible birth years. Add birthday timing when known to narrow the result.

What a Birth Year Estimate Means
Completed age counts birthday anniversaries already reached. Someone remains age 26 from the 26th birthday until the day before the 27th birthday. A reference date inside that interval can match birth dates spread across parts of two calendar years.
For example, a person aged 26 on July 24, 2026 might have been born on July 24, 2000. That person reached 26 on the reference date. The same age also matches someone born July 25, 1999, who reached 26 on July 25, 2025 and will turn 27 the next day. Every date between those boundaries also matches.
This is why a year-only subtraction is sometimes incomplete. The calculator separates a resolved year from an estimate. One year is shown when the selected information supports one year. Two years are shown when both remain possible.
Birth Year Calculation Formula
The basic formula depends on birthday timing:
When timing is unknown, both formulas may apply. The exact reference month and day matter at year boundaries. On December 31, no later birthday remains in that calendar year, so an age-only result can already resolve to one birth year. On January 1, a birthday might be today or still upcoming, so two years can remain possible.
The general date-window rule is:
Leap-day anniversaries can move a boundary by one day. The calculator therefore validates actual anniversary dates under the selected February 29 convention instead of relying only on the shortcut.
Worked Birth Year Example
Suppose completed age is 26 on July 24, 2026.
- If the birthday happened earlier in 2026, subtract 26 from 2026. The birth year is 2000.
- If the birthday is July 24, the same subtraction gives 2000.
- If the birthday is later in 2026, subtract one more year. The birth year is 1999.
- If birthday timing is unknown, the birth year is 1999 or 2000.
- The complete matching birth-date window is July 25, 1999 through July 24, 2000.
- That window contains 366 dates because it crosses February 29, 2000.
The result is not saying the person has two birth years. It says the supplied age and reference date do not identify which side of the annual birthday boundary applies. One more fact about birthday timing resolves the year.
Why Age Alone Often Produces Two Years
A calendar year and an age year start on different dates. The calendar year starts January 1. An age year starts on a birthday. Unless the birthday is January 1, part of each age year lies in one calendar year and the rest lies in the next.
For age 26 on a midyear date, people whose birthdays already occurred generally have the later birth year. People whose birthdays are still coming generally have the earlier birth year. The exact matching date window remains about one year long, but it can contain 365 or 366 dates depending on the dates crossed and the selected leap-day rule.
The result cards make the range visible. “Oldest matching birth date” means the earliest date that still produces the entered age. “Youngest matching birth date” means the latest date that produces the same age. Dates outside the window produce a different completed age.

Earlier, today and later are separate to avoid an ambiguous “birthday passed” answer. At January 1, no birthday can be earlier in that year. At December 31, no birthday can be later. The calculator reports an error when a selected timing is impossible for the reference date.
How the Birth-Date Window Is Checked
The tool checks candidate dates in the two years around the basic formula. For each candidate, it creates the birthday anniversary in the reference year and asks whether that anniversary occurred before, on or after the reference date. It then calculates completed age.
This approach handles month lengths without assuming 30-day months or a 365-day year. It also means the number of matching dates is not forced to 365. A date window crossing a leap day can contain 366 matching calendar dates.
The window is inclusive at both ends. The oldest date and youngest date each produce the entered age. Moving one day earlier makes the person one year older. Moving one day later makes the person one year younger, except where a chosen February 29 anniversary convention changes the boundary.
Leap Years and February 29 Birthdays
The U.S. Naval Observatory leap-year rule states that Gregorian years divisible by four are leap years, except century years must also be divisible by 400. The year 2000 was a leap year. The years 1900 and 2100 are not.
A February 29 birth date has no identical month-and-day anniversary in a common year. Some purposes use February 28. Others use March 1. The selector keeps this assumption visible. It can change which candidate dates count as having a birthday earlier, today or later around the end of February.
If the task involves legal age, school eligibility, insurance, benefits, licensing or another formal threshold, verify the rule used by the responsible authority. The selected convention controls this calculator's arithmetic. It does not establish the rule that legally applies.
Special Cases to Check
Age zero
Age zero means less than one completed year. On July 24, 2026, age zero can match a birth date from July 25, 2025 through July 24, 2026. The result may therefore include the previous and current birth years.
January 1
A birthday cannot be earlier in the year on January 1. It can be today or later. Selecting “earlier this year” produces no candidates, which signals that the timing choice needs correction.
December 31
A birthday cannot be later in the year on December 31. With unknown timing, the complete matching date window can fall inside one birth year, so the result may resolve without any additional birthday information.
Past or future reference dates
The date does not need to be today. Use a past reference date to reconstruct the birth year implied by an old record. Use a future reference date for planning. Keep the age tied to that exact date. Mixing today's age with an earlier reference date produces the wrong year.

- Subtracting age without checking the birthday: The correct year may be one year earlier.
- Entering the next year of life: Someone aged 26 is in the 27th year but has completed 26 years.
- Using the current year instead of the record date: Age must match the selected reference date.
- Assuming the result must contain two years: Exact date boundaries can leave only one valid year.
- Ignoring February 29: Anniversary timing can depend on the selected convention.
- Treating an estimate as identity proof: A birth certificate or other accepted record supplies the verified date.
When You Need an Exact Date of Birth
