Calculation steps

  1. Coursework weight is 100% − 30% = 70%.
  2. Current coursework contributes 82% × 70% = 57.4 points.
  3. The final must contribute 85 − 57.4 = 27.6 points.
  4. Required final score is 27.6 ÷ 30% = 92%.

How to Use This Final Grade Calculator

  1. Choose the goal. Find the exam score required for a target, or project the course grade from an expected exam result.
  2. Choose the grading method. Use weighted coursework when the syllabus gives a final-exam percentage. Use total course points when every item contributes points to one denominator.
  3. Enter current information. In weighted mode, enter the completed-work average with the final excluded. In points mode, enter earned and possible points separately.
  4. Enter the final details. Add the final weight or its possible points, then enter the target grade or expected final result.
  5. Set extra-credit limits only when applicable. Keep scores capped at 100% unless the syllabus states a higher maximum.
  6. Choose display precision. Required scores use an upward safe minimum at the selected decimal place, even if ordinary display is set to truncate.
  7. Calculate and review. Check the formula steps, feasibility label, zero and maximum scenarios, and the official course policy.

Final Grade Formula for a Weighted Final Exam

Let C be the current coursework grade, w the final-exam weight written as a decimal, F the final-exam score, and T the target course grade. The projected course grade is:

Projected course grade = C × (1 − w) + F × w

Solving the same equation for the unknown final score gives:

Required final score = [T − C × (1 − w)] ÷ w

The calculator accepts the weight as a percentage number. A 30% final uses w = 0.30. The coursework share is therefore 70%. Do not enter weighted points already earned as the current grade. Enter the normalized average for the completed, non-final work.

Worked Required Final Grade Example

Assume your current coursework grade is 82%, the final exam is worth 30%, and your target course grade is 85%.

The completed coursework contributes 82 × 0.70 = 57.4 percentage points. The target needs another 85 − 57.4 = 27.6 points. Dividing 27.6 by the final weight of 0.30 gives an exact required final score of 92%.

Points-Based Final Grade Formula

Use points mode when the course grade equals total points earned divided by total points possible. Let E be points earned so far, P the points possible so far, and Q the final exam points possible.

Required final points = T × (P + Q) ÷ 100 − E
Projected course grade = (E + final points earned) ÷ (P + Q) × 100

For example, suppose you have 420 of 500 points, the final is worth 200 points, and you want an 80% course grade. You need 0.80 × 700 − 420 = 140 final points. That is 70% of the 200-point exam.

Do not enter a separate final weight in points mode. Its effective weight is 200 ÷ 700 = approximately 28.57% in this example.

What Current Coursework Grade Means

The weighted formula needs a current grade normalized over completed work only. If the non-final categories currently total 70% of the course, their displayed weighted contribution is not the same as the completed-work average.

Some gradebooks show a “current grade” based only on graded work. Others show a “total grade” that treats ungraded work as zero. If the ungraded final is already counted as zero, do not reuse that total as C. Recalculate the completed-work average or use course-points mode.

Check for other remaining work. The calculator assumes the final exam is the only ungraded item. Add remaining homework, projects, labs, or participation through the correct grade method before relying on the result.

Required Scores Below 0% or Above 100%

A negative algebraic requirement means the target is already secured under the simple model. The calculator reports a practical minimum of 0% and keeps the negative threshold in the details. This does not account for minimum-exam rules, attendance requirements, or automatic-fail policies.

An exact requirement above 100% means the target exceeds the standard exam maximum. In points mode, an exact requirement of 100% or less can also produce a displayed safe minimum above 100% when required points round upward to the selected increment. The result badge distinguishes those cases; use finer precision only when the course permits it. Turn on extra credit only when the syllabus provides such a path.

A final worth 0% cannot change the course grade. A final worth 100% makes the current coursework grade irrelevant. The calculator handles both boundaries without dividing by zero.

Letter Grades, Curves, and Course Policies

The calculator does not assume that 90% is an A, 80% is a B, or another universal letter scale. Enter the numerical cutoff listed for your course. Instructors and institutions set different thresholds, plus/minus ranges, competency rules, or pass requirements.

Curves, dropped assignments, category caps, replacement exams, attendance penalties, missing-work rules, and overrides can change the official result. Weighted gradebooks may also exclude ungraded work or normalize incomplete categories. Copy the exact values from the syllabus and confirm how the learning system is configured.

Safe Minimum, Rounding, and Truncation

The calculator keeps decimals and fractions as exact rational values. It calculates the unrounded threshold first. The main required-score result then rounds upward at the selected decimal place so the displayed minimum does not fall below the true requirement.

Suppose the exact requirement is 290 ÷ 3 = 96.666…%. At two decimals, ordinary half-up display is approximately 96.67%, while truncation displays approximately 96.66%. The safe minimum remains 96.67% because 96.66% is below the exact threshold.

Your school may round only the final course total, truncate, keep more decimal places, or apply no rounding. The calculator labels discarded digits with an approximation sign. It cannot replace the official cutoff and precision policy.

How Extra Credit Changes the Result

Extra credit does not follow one universal formula. In a points system, bonus points may increase earned points without increasing possible points. Another assignment may increase both. In a weighted system, extra credit may sit inside one category, add a separate category, or change a category maximum.

If bonus points are already included in your current coursework grade, do not add them again. If your course permits a final score above 100%, turn on the extra-credit option and enter the stated maximum. The calculator uses that number for feasibility. It does not claim the score is available.

Common Final Grade Calculation Mistakes

  • Using a total grade that already counts the ungraded final as zero.
  • Entering 0.30 instead of 30 for a final worth 30%.
  • Mixing a percentage-weighted course with a total-points formula.
  • Assuming the final is the only remaining work when other assignments are open.
  • Rounding the coursework contribution before solving for the final score.
  • Treating a truncated required score as sufficient.
  • Assuming every course caps scores at 100% or allows extra credit.
  • Applying a universal letter-grade cutoff or ignoring a minimum-exam rule.

What grade do I need on my final?

Enter your completed-work grade, the final-exam weight, and your target course grade. The calculator subtracts the coursework contribution from the target, then divides the remaining contribution by the final weight.

How is the required final score calculated?

For a weighted final, use [target − current grade × (1 − final weight)] ÷ final weight, with the weight written as a decimal. Points mode solves the target total points first, then subtracts points already earned.

What does current coursework grade mean?

It is the normalized average for completed non-final work. It must exclude the final exam. If your gradebook already treats the ungraded final as zero, recalculate the completed-work average or use points mode.

Should I use weighted mode or points mode?

Use weighted mode when the syllabus gives the final a percentage of the course. Use points mode when the course grade is total points earned divided by total points possible. Do not mix the two systems.

What if the final is worth 0%?

The final cannot change the course grade. If the current grade meets the target, no final score is needed under this model. If it is below the target, the final cannot close the gap.

What if the final is worth 100%?

The final exam becomes the entire course grade under the entered model. The required final score equals the target, and the current coursework grade does not affect the calculation.

Why is my required score above 100%?

An exact requirement above 100% exceeds the standard exam maximum. In points mode, upward safe rounding to the selected point increment can instead push the displayed equivalent above 100% even when the exact requirement does not. Read the result badge, use finer precision only if allowed, and assume extra credit only when the course policy permits it.

Why is my required score negative?

The target is already secured even with a 0% final under the simple weighted or points model. The calculator shows 0% as the practical minimum but retains the negative algebraic threshold in the details.

How does extra credit affect the result?

It depends on the syllabus. Bonus points may increase earned points only, increase both earned and possible points, or change a weighted category. Enter only the treatment your course officially uses.

Does the calculator include curves and school rounding?

No. It applies the inputs and display rule you select. Curves, letter cutoffs, category caps, dropped work, minimum-exam rules, and the official course-grade rounding policy remain external.
