Fuel Cost Formula

The core calculation has two steps. First estimate the fuel required for the selected distance. Then multiply the fuel quantity by its price. Optional tolls, parking and other route charges are added after fuel cost.

Fuel required = Total distance ÷ Distance per unit of fuel Fuel cost = Fuel required × Fuel price per unit All-in journey cost = Fuel cost + Tolls + Parking + Other costs

For L/100 km, fuel required equals distance in kilometres × L/100 km ÷ 100. For MPG, the calculator converts miles and the selected gallon definition to kilometres and litres before calculating.

Worked Example

Suppose your workplace is 25 km away, so a round-trip commute covers 50 km. Your car returns 15 km/L, fuel costs ₹100 per litre and you commute 22 days each month.

  • Fuel per commute day: 50 ÷ 15 = 3.333 litres
  • Fuel cost per commute day: 3.333 × ₹100 = ₹333.33
  • Monthly fuel cost: ₹333.33 × 22 = ₹7,333.33
  • Annual fuel cost: ₹7,333.33 × 12 = ₹88,000

If the route also costs ₹100 in tolls and ₹50 for parking each day, the all-in commute becomes ₹483.33 per day, ₹10,633.33 per month and ₹127,600 per year. For two equal contributors, the per-person daily cost is ₹241.67.

Choose the Correct Fuel-Economy Unit

Fuel economy and fuel consumption describe the same relationship in opposite ways. Higher km/L or MPG means the vehicle travels farther on each unit of fuel. Lower L/100 km means the vehicle uses less fuel over a fixed distance.

NIST gives the US MPG conversion as L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ MPG. The calculator also treats a US liquid gallon as 3.785411784 litres and an Imperial gallon as 4.54609 litres. These gallon definitions are different, so 30 US MPG and 30 Imperial MPG do not represent the same fuel consumption.

Trip Cost Versus Commute Cost

One-off road trip

Use one trip. Include the complete outward and return distance, or enter one-way distance and select round trip. Add the route's total toll and parking costs once.

Work or school commute

Use recurring commute and enter the number of travel days in a typical month. The tool multiplies the daily journey by those days, then multiplies the monthly result by 12.

Carpool or shared ride

Enter everyone contributing equally, including the driver. The split covers fuel and entered route charges. It does not include wear, depreciation or driver time.

A monthly average is a planning figure. Holidays, remote-work days, leave, seasonal travel and fuel-price changes affect actual yearly cost. If your commute schedule varies, calculate a lower and upper case instead of relying on one precise total.

Use Real-World Mileage, Not a Best-Case Figure

Vehicle labels and certification tests help compare vehicles under standardized methods. They do not guarantee the exact economy you will get on your route. EPA guidance notes that driving style, maintenance, air-conditioning and accessories, weather, road conditions and vehicle load affect actual fuel economy.

How to measure tank-to-tank fuel economy

  1. Fill the tank consistently and reset the trip meter.
  2. Drive normally across a representative distance.
  3. Refill under similar conditions and record the fuel added.
  4. Divide distance driven by fuel added for km/L or MPG.
  5. Average several tanks to reduce single-fill variation.

For L/100 km, divide fuel added by distance driven and multiply by 100. Keep the same distance and volume units throughout the calculation. A short city-only sample may not represent a long highway trip.

Do not assume your dashboard reading, certified rating and tank-to-tank result use the same method. Record the unit, route type, fuel grade and measurement period beside the number.

Why Fuel Cost Changes

Route and traffic

Stop-start traffic, long idling periods, steep terrain, detours and low average speed change fuel use. A longer free-flowing route may use less fuel than a shorter congested route, though tolls and total time may alter the better choice.

Vehicle condition and load

Tire condition and pressure, maintenance, roof racks, cargo and passenger load affect demand on the vehicle. Follow the vehicle manufacturer's service schedule and tire-pressure placard. Do not change safety-related settings solely to reduce a calculator estimate.

Fuel price and grade

Prices differ by location, tax, station, date and fuel grade. Enter the price you expect to pay for the fuel required by the manufacturer. This page does not recommend switching fuel grade or fuel type.

Driving style and climate

Rapid acceleration, high speeds, frequent braking, heating, cooling and extreme weather can change consumption. Use the sensitivity table to see the budget effect of using 10% less fuel or 20% more fuel than the central estimate.

Compare Routes and Vehicles Correctly

To compare two routes, calculate each route separately with the same vehicle, fuel price and measurement period. Change the distance, expected real-world economy, toll and parking inputs for the alternative route. The lower fuel cost is not always the lower all-in cost. A tolled road may use less fuel yet cost more after the toll. A congested free route may be shorter yet use more fuel.

Also compare time and reliability outside the calculator. Ten minutes saved on a typical day may matter differently from a route that has frequent long delays. Keep the date and source of each route charge because toll and parking rates change.

Compare vehicles using fuel consumed

When comparing two vehicles over the same distance, fuel consumption often shows the difference more clearly than MPG alone. EPA explains the “MPG illusion”: equal MPG increases do not produce equal fuel savings. An improvement from low MPG removes more fuel consumption than the same numeric MPG improvement at a high MPG level.

For a consistent comparison, convert both vehicles to L/100 km or gallons per 100 miles. Then multiply each consumption rate by the same annual distance and fuel price. Keep vehicle purchase price, insurance, maintenance and depreciation in a separate ownership-cost comparison.

Route savings = Existing all-in cost − Alternative all-in cost Annual route savings = Savings per journey × Journeys per month × 12

A positive result means the alternative route costs less under the entered assumptions. Recheck the result after a fuel-price, toll or commute-schedule change.

Petrol, Diesel, Hybrid and Electric Vehicles

The calculator works for petrol, gasoline, diesel and other liquid-fuel vehicles because the cost formula depends on distance, liquid fuel consumed and price per unit. It does not apply a preset price or assume that one fuel type has the same energy content, performance or environmental effect as another.

Conventional hybrid vehicles

Use a recent real-world fuel-economy result covering driving similar to your planned route. Hybrid economy may change sharply between city and highway use, so a mixed annual average may not represent a single long motorway trip.

Plug-in hybrids

This tool estimates the liquid-fuel portion only. A plug-in hybrid trip may use both electricity and fuel. Add electricity consumed, charging losses and the applicable electricity price separately. Do not enter MPGe as if it were liquid-fuel MPG.

Battery-electric vehicles

Do not use this liquid-fuel calculator for a battery-electric vehicle. EV travel cost needs distance, energy use in kWh per distance, charging losses and price per kWh. Public charging may also include session, time or parking charges.

MPGe is an energy-equivalence comparison measure. It is not the number of liquid gallons purchased for an electric trip, so multiplying MPGe by a petrol or gasoline price gives the wrong cost.

Fuel Cost Is Not the Full Cost of Driving

This tool adds route charges but does not calculate complete vehicle ownership cost. For a broader comparison, keep fuel separate from fixed and long-term expenses.

Fuel-only comparisons are useful for route planning. They are incomplete for deciding whether to buy a vehicle, drive to work, reimburse business mileage or compare driving with public transport.

  • Check real route distance before budgeting, including predictable detours.
  • Track several fuel fills to spot a change in actual economy.
  • Follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule and tire guidance.
  • Compare fuel, tolls, parking and travel time across routes.
  • Share eligible commute costs only when the route and schedule work for everyone.
  • Recalculate after a fuel-price, job-location or commute-frequency change.

Do not perform calculations or operate a phone while driving. Plan before departure or ask a passenger to handle route changes safely.

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?

Divide total distance by distance travelled per unit of fuel, then multiply fuel required by fuel price. When using L/100 km, multiply kilometres by L/100 km and divide by 100.

Does round trip double every input?

No. It doubles the entered one-way distance. Enter the complete toll, parking and other cost for the selected round trip because those optional amounts are not doubled automatically.

What is the difference between US and Imperial MPG?

They use different gallon sizes. An Imperial gallon is larger than a US gallon, so the same numeric MPG value does not represent the same fuel consumption.

Should I use km/L or L/100 km?

Use the unit shown by your reliable source. Higher km/L means better economy. Lower L/100 km means lower consumption. Do not enter one unit's value under the other.

Does the calculator fetch live petrol or gas prices?

No. Enter a current local price for the correct fuel grade and price unit. Prices change by location and date.

How does the commute calculation work?

The tool multiplies one selected journey by commute days per month. It multiplies the monthly result by 12 for an annual planning estimate.

Does cost per person include the driver?

It divides the all-in journey cost by the number you enter. Include the driver when everyone shares equally.

Why is my actual fuel cost higher?

Distance, congestion, idling, speed, terrain, load, vehicle condition, weather, accessories, fuel price and measurement error can change the result.

Does this include maintenance and depreciation?

No. It includes fuel and optional toll, parking and route costs. Add insurance, finance, maintenance, tires, registration and depreciation for full ownership cost.

Can I use the result for mileage reimbursement?

Use it only as supporting trip math. An employer or authority may use a fixed rate, eligible-distance rule and documentation standard that differs from actual fuel cost.
