Percent Off Formula
A percent-off discount removes a stated share of the original price. Divide the percentage by 100 to convert it to a rate, multiply that rate by the original price to find the savings, then subtract the savings from the original price.
You may also calculate the final price in one step. Subtract the discount from 100% to find the percentage you pay, then multiply the original price by that remaining rate.
- Percentage you pay = 100% − Percent off
- Sale-price multiplier = (100 − Percent off) ÷ 100
- Verification = Final price + Amount saved
Worked Example: 17.5% Off 240
Suppose an item has an original price of 240 and a discount of 17.5%. First convert 17.5% to 0.175. Multiply 240 by 0.175 to find the savings.
You pay 82.5% of the original price, so the multiplier is 0.825. The exact check is 198 + 42 = 240. This check uses exact values rather than rounded display values.
What Percent Off Means
Percent off uses the original listed price as the reference whole. A 25% discount removes one quarter of that price and leaves 75% to pay. It does not mean the final price equals 25% of the original. That mix-up reverses the discount and remaining shares.
The same percentage creates different savings on different prices. Twenty percent off 50 saves 10, while 20% off 500 saves 100. A useful result includes the original price, discount rate, amount saved and final price.
Common Discounts and Percentage Paid
The percentage paid is the complement of the discount. Subtract the percent off from 100. The table shows the final amount for an original price of 100 units, so the final amount also matches the percentage paid.

Zero, 100% and Discounts Above 100%
A 0% discount
Zero percent off removes nothing. The amount saved is zero, the multiplier is 1, and the final price equals the original price. This is a valid boundary result.
A 100% discount
One hundred percent off removes the complete original price. The amount saved equals the original price and the final price is zero before taxes, fees or other charges.
A discount above 100%
A rate above 100% produces a negative mathematical final price. For example, 150% off 100 saves 150 and produces −50. This represents a credit, rebate or payment to the buyer, not an ordinary retail sale. The calculator shows the exact result and a warning instead of silently limiting the rate.
An original price of zero
No division by the price is required, so zero is valid. Any nonnegative discount applied to a zero original price leaves both the savings and final price at zero. A rate above 100% remains unconventional even though the numeric result stays zero.
Sequential Discounts Are Not Added
Two discounts applied one after another use different price bases. A 20% discount leaves 80% of the original. A second 10% discount removes 10% of that reduced price, not 10% of the original.
Adding 20% and 10% would claim 30% off and a final price of 70, which is incorrect for sequential discounts. Multiply the remaining-price factors, then subtract the combined factor from 1. This calculator evaluates one discount at a time, so enter the effective combined rate only after calculating it correctly.
Reverse a Known Discount
If you know the final sale price and discount rate, divide the final price by the percentage-paid multiplier to recover the original price. For a 20% discount, the multiplier is 0.80.
If the final price is 80 after 20% off, divide 80 by 0.80 to get an original price of 100. A 100% discount has a zero multiplier, so the final price alone cannot reveal the original price.
Percent Off Versus Percentage Decrease
The arithmetic is related, but the inputs answer different questions. Percent off starts with an original price and a stated discount rate, then calculates savings and the sale price. Percentage decrease starts with an original value and a lower observed value, then calculates the reduction rate.
If an item falls from 100 to 80, the percentage decrease is 20%. If a seller states 20% off 100, the calculated sale price is 80. The numbers agree when both prices use the same basis, but product changes, bundles, membership prices or different list-price definitions can make the comparison misleading.
Coupons, Cashback, Tax and Shipping
A seller may apply a coupon before or after another promotion. Some coupons apply only to eligible items or stop at a maximum savings amount. Cashback often arrives later and does not reduce the amount charged at checkout. A percent-off result should not automatically treat cashback as an instant price reduction.
Tax rules also differ. Tax may apply to the discounted price, the pre-discount price or a price after selected coupons, depending on location and promotion type. Delivery, service charges, tips and marketplace fees may be added after the discount. Use the seller's checkout order when you need a payable total.
This calculator gives the mathematical result for one percentage off the entered original price. It does not interpret retailer eligibility, coupon caps, minimum spends, tax rules or refund terms.
Exact Fractions and Rounding
Some prices or discount rates are easiest to express as fractions. For an original price of 1/2 and a discount of 12 1/2%, the exact savings are 1/16 and the exact final price is 7/16. Converting too early to a short decimal may introduce drift.
The calculator converts accepted inputs to reduced fractions and uses integer-backed arithmetic. It rounds only the displayed decimal. The approximation mark appears when the selected number of decimal places cannot represent the exact result. Changing display precision never changes the stored exact answer.
For cash payments, a merchant may round to the smallest available denomination. Card systems may use currency-specific minor units. Treat the displayed precision as a calculation choice, then follow the seller's actual rounding rule.
Practical Percent-Off Examples
25% off 80
The amount saved is 80 × 25 ÷ 100 = 20. The final price is 60, and you pay 75% of the original price.
20% off 99.99
The exact savings are 19.998 and the exact final price is 79.992. A two-decimal display shows about 20 saved and about 79.99 as the final price. A retailer may round each line or the order total differently.
One third percent off 300
Enter 1/3 as the percent-off rate. The exact savings are 1 because 1/3% equals 1/300 of the original. The exact final price is 299.
12% off 2,500
Enter 2.5e3 for the original price and 1.2e1 for the rate. The savings are 300 and the final price is 2,200.

The original price must be zero or higher. The percent-off rate must be nonnegative. A negative rate represents a markup, not a discount, so the calculator rejects it. Rates above 100% are calculated with a warning because they create a negative final price for a positive original price.
The method reduces both inputs to exact rational numbers, divides the percent by 100, multiplies the result by the original price, and subtracts the exact savings. The verification adds the exact final price and savings back to the original price. Recent history stays in the current page and disappears when the page reloads.
