How to Use This Food Calorie Calculator
This calculator totals energy values you enter. It does not search foods or guess nutrition from a name. Start with a package Nutrition Facts label, a reliable food-composition record, or a calculated recipe value. Then make sure the calorie value and the amount eaten use the same reference.
- Enter an optional meal or list name, such as Breakfast, Afternoon Snack, or Monday Food Log.
- Add one row for each food or drink that contributes calories.
- Select the calorie basis: one serving, one item, 100 g, 100 mL, or a custom unit.
- Enter calories for that basis and the amount actually eaten or consumed.
- Select Calculate Total to see total kcal, total kJ, each food subtotal, and its share of the entered total.
Fractions work for serving, item, and custom-unit amounts. You may enter values such as 0.5, 1/2, 1 1/2, or the common single-character fraction symbols. For 100 g and 100 mL data, enter the actual grams or millilitres consumed. The calculator divides that amount by 100 before applying the calorie value.
Check the reference carefully. If a label says 180 Calories per two cookies, “one serving” means two cookies. Eating three cookies equals 1.5 of those label servings, not three servings.
Food Calorie Formula
For each food, the calculator converts the amount eaten into a multiplier, applies that multiplier to the entered calorie value, and then sums every completed row.
Total food calories = sum of all food subtotals
Kilojoules = total kcal × 4.184
For “per serving,” “per item,” and custom-unit data, the number entered under Amount eaten is the multiplier. For “per 100 g” data, the multiplier is grams eaten divided by 100. The same rule applies to millilitres for “per 100 mL” data.
Worked example
Suppose a snack contains three foods:
- An apple listed at 95 kcal per item, with 1 item eaten: 95 × 1 = 95 kcal.
- Yogurt listed at 150 kcal per serving, with 1.5 servings eaten: 150 × 1.5 = 225 kcal.
- Crackers listed at 80 kcal per serving, with 2.5 servings eaten: 80 × 2.5 = 200 kcal.
The total is 95 + 225 + 200 = 520 kcal. Multiplying by 4.184 gives 2,175.68 kJ, displayed as about 2,176 kJ.
Example using calories per 100 g
If a food provides 240 kcal per 100 g and you eat 65 g, the multiplier is 65 ÷ 100 = 0.65. The food subtotal is 240 × 0.65 = 156 kcal. Do not enter 0.65 as grams. Enter 65 g, and the calculator performs the conversion.
Choose the Correct Calorie Reference
The most common calculation error is mixing the source reference with a different amount unit. This table shows what each option means.

Do not convert cups to grams unless you have an ingredient-specific density or a measured weight. Volume and mass are different quantities. A cup of chopped fruit, flour, oil, or cooked rice does not have one universal gram value.
Where to Find Food Calorie Values
Package Nutrition Facts label
For packaged food, start with the calories and serving information on the current label. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration explains that calories on a label apply to the stated serving, while serving size reflects an amount people typically consume. It is not a recommendation for how much you should eat. If you consume two label servings, multiply the listed calories by two.
USDA FoodData Central
For basic foods without a package label, USDA FoodData Central provides food-composition records. Choose a record that matches the food form. Raw chicken, roasted chicken, chicken with skin, and chicken without skin are different records. The same caution applies to dry versus cooked grains, drained versus undrained canned food, and branded versus generic products.
Your own recipe calculation
For a homemade dish, total the ingredient calories and divide by the actual finished yield or number of portions. Once you have calories per finished serving, add that serving to this calculator with the amount you ate.
Why Your Total May Differ From a Label or App
A calculator may be mathematically correct and still differ from another source. Food energy is an estimate built from measurement, food-composition data, calculation factors, and display rules.
- Serving-size mismatch: A package may contain more than one serving, and a household measure may not match the portion placed on your plate.
- Label rounding: U.S. nutrition-label rules allow calories to be displayed in set increments. Nutrient grams on the same label are also rounded, so recalculating from the printed grams may not reproduce the printed calorie number.
- Different food records: Variety, brand, formulation, ripeness, edible portion, and laboratory source can change a database value.
- Raw versus cooked weight: Cooking changes water content. A food may have more or fewer calories per 100 g after cooking even when the total energy in the whole batch changes little.
- Drained or discarded material: Oil, syrup, brine, bones, peel, and cooking liquid affect the amount actually consumed.
- Atwater factors: General factors are averages. USDA records may use general or food-specific factors, and measured available energy can vary with the food matrix.
Keep source values at their available precision while calculating. Round only the final displayed result. This page preserves the entered decimals for the math and rounds the total for easy reading.
Calories, kcal, and kJ
In everyday nutrition, “Calories” with a capital C and kilocalories, written kcal, refer to the same food-energy unit. A label showing 200 Calories represents 200 kcal, not 200 small physics calories. Kilojoules are another energy unit used on labels in many countries, and USDA food-composition documentation uses the exact conversion below.
The calculator always shows both kcal and kJ. Changing the primary display does not change the food total. It changes only which unit appears first in the result.
Why a macro-based estimate may differ
A common cross-check applies general Atwater factors to protein, carbohydrate, fat, and alcohol. This shortcut does not create an official Nutrition Facts value. Specific foods, fibre, sugar alcohols, allulose, rounded nutrient declarations, and laboratory methods can produce a different result. Prefer a current label or reliable food record for this page. This page adds food energy. It does not decide how many calories you need, whether a meal is healthy, or whether you should lose or gain weight. Personal energy needs depend on age, body size, activity, life stage, health context, and other factors.

A calorie total also does not describe nutrient quality. Two foods with the same energy can differ in protein, fibre, vitamins, minerals, sodium, added sugars, and portion volume. Review the full nutrition information and your dietary needs, not only the calorie number.
Tips for More Reliable Food Tracking
- Use a kitchen scale when the source lists calories per 100 g and portion size matters.
- Record the food form, such as raw, cooked, drained, peeled, or with skin.
- Use the exact brand label for formulated packaged foods when possible.
- Count calorie-containing drinks, sauces, oils, toppings, and cooking additions.
- Measure the edible amount. Do not include bones, pits, wrappers, or discarded liquid.
- Keep the same source for repeated tracking so changes reflect portions instead of database switching.
- Treat restaurant and homemade estimates as ranges when recipes and serving weights are unknown.

It multiplies the calories listed for each food reference by the amount eaten, then adds all food subtotals. For per-100 g or per-100 mL data, it first divides the consumed amount by 100.
Does this calculator contain a food database?
No. You enter calorie values from a package label, a reliable food-composition record, or your own recipe calculation. The tool does not guess a food value from its name.
How do I calculate calories from a Nutrition Facts label?
Enter the calories shown for one label serving, then enter how many of those servings you consumed. If you ate twice the stated serving, enter 2; if you ate half, enter 0.5 or 1/2.
How do I use a calories-per-100 g value?
Select Per 100 g, enter the calorie value for 100 g, and enter the actual grams eaten. The calculator divides the grams by 100 and applies that multiplier to the calorie value.
Can I enter fractions of a serving?
Yes. The amount field accepts decimals, simple fractions, mixed fractions, and common single-character fractions. Examples include 0.5, 1/2, 1 1/2, and 1½.
Why do calculated calories differ from the package label?
Package calories and nutrient grams may be rounded, and manufacturers may use permitted food-specific factors or other methods. Recalculating from rounded protein, carbohydrate, and fat values may not reproduce the displayed calories.
Are Calories and kcal the same for food?
Yes. In nutrition, one capital-C Calorie equals one kilocalorie, written kcal. The calculator also converts the total to kilojoules using 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ.
Can this calculator tell me how many calories I should eat?
No. It totals entered food energy only. Personal calorie needs vary with age, body size, activity, life stage, health context, and goals.
Should I use raw or cooked food values?
Use the value that matches the food as eaten and the weight you measured. Cooking changes water content, so raw and cooked calorie values per 100 g are often different.
Is the result an official nutrition label?
No. It is a planning estimate based on values you enter. It does not perform laboratory analysis, verify regulatory serving sizes, or create a compliant Nutrition Facts label.
