Precious-metal “ounce” usually means a troy ounce. This tool never treats a regular ounce or pound as a troy unit unless you select that unit explicitly.

This calculator converts mass only. It does not determine silver purity, fine-silver content, melt value, price, premium, dealer payout or assay result.

Reviewed on 15 July 2026 using NIST Handbook 44 mass tables, LBMA silver-market conventions and official Royal Mint silver specifications.

Silver is weighed in both metric and customary units. Bullion prices and large wholesale bars commonly use troy ounces, while scrap, shipping and household scales may use grams, kilograms, regular ounces or regular pounds. This converter makes the unit definition explicit before converting.

Quick answer: enter the weight, select the starting unit and choose the target unit. The results panel also displays all nine supported equivalents so you can compare troy, metric and avoirdupois measurements.

How the Silver Weight Converter Works

The calculator uses grams as a common internal bridge. It multiplies the entered amount by the source unit's gram factor, then divides that gram result by the target unit's factor.

Weight in grams = entered weight × source-unit gram factor
Converted weight = weight in grams ÷ target-unit gram factor

Calculations retain the unrounded numeric result. Display values use up to ten decimal places, with scientific notation for extremely small or large results.

NIST's 2026 tables define the troy relationships of 24 grains per pennyweight, 20 pennyweights per troy ounce and 12 troy ounces per troy pound. They separately define the avoirdupois system as 16 regular ounces and 7,000 grains per regular pound.

Troy Ounce vs Regular Ounce

1 troy ounce31.1034768 grams. This is the usual precious-metals ounce and the calculator symbol is ozt.
1 regular ounce28.349523125 grams. This is the avoirdupois ounce and the calculator symbol is oz.
1 ozt in regular ouncesApproximately 1.0971428571 oz.
1 regular oz in troy ouncesApproximately 0.9114583333 ozt.

LBMA silver market conventions express the silver price per troy ounce. Do not convert a precious-metal quote with the 28.3495-gram regular-ounce factor unless the source explicitly says it uses an avoirdupois ounce.

Regular Pound vs Troy Pound

A regular pound and a troy pound are different masses:

  • 1 regular pound = 453.59237 grams = approximately 14.5833333333 troy ounces
  • 1 troy pound = 373.2417216 grams = exactly 12 troy ounces
  • 1 regular pound is therefore heavier than 1 troy pound
Check “lb” carefully: most modern shipping and scrap scales use the regular avoirdupois pound. Historical or specialist records may use a troy pound. This page labels them as “regular pounds (lb)” and “troy pounds (lb t)” rather than guessing.

Pennyweight, Grain and Tola

Pennyweight and grain belong to traditional precious-metal measurement. Twenty pennyweights equal one troy ounce, and each pennyweight contains 24 grains. The grain is common to troy and avoirdupois relationships even though the larger units differ.

This page uses the conventional 180-troy-grain tola:

1 tola = 180 grains = 7.5 dwt = 0.375 ozt = 11.6638038 g

Some retail listings may use “tola” loosely for a 10-gram product. This converter does not: select grams when a product is explicitly marked 10 g.

Worked Silver Weight Examples

100 g to troy ounces100 ÷ 31.1034768 = approximately 3.2150746569 ozt.
1 kg to troy ounces1,000 ÷ 31.1034768 = approximately 32.1507465686 ozt.
1 regular lb to troy ounces453.59237 ÷ 31.1034768 = approximately 14.5833333333 ozt.
20 dwt to troy ounces20 × 1.55517384 ÷ 31.1034768 = exactly 1 ozt.

The Royal Mint's one-kilogram silver bar specification lists pure metal content as approximately 32.15 troy ounces, consistent with the kilogram-to-troy-ounce conversion after display rounding.

Total Weight vs Fine-Silver Content

Unit conversion does not change or determine purity. A 100-gram sterling-silver item and a 100-gram 999 silver bar have the same total mass but different fine-silver content. Likewise, stones, handles, fillers, packaging and non-silver components can be part of a gross measured weight.

Use an item's documented pure metal content when available, or use the appropriate value or melt calculator to apply fineness. This converter intentionally has no price or purity field.

Scale Accuracy and Rounding

  • Use a scale with enough capacity and resolution for the item or lot.
  • Tare containers, trays and packaging before recording net weight.
  • Confirm whether the display unit is g, kg, oz, lb, ozt or dwt.
  • Keep unrounded results until the final reporting or pricing step.
  • Remember that displayed decimal places do not improve the physical scale's accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many grams are in one troy ounce of silver?
One troy ounce equals 31.1034768 grams. This is the ounce commonly used for silver bullion and precious-metal pricing.
How many troy ounces are in one kilogram of silver?
One kilogram divided by 31.1034768 equals approximately 32.1507465686 troy ounces.
Is a silver ounce the same as a regular ounce?
Usually no. A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams; a regular avoirdupois ounce is 28.349523125 grams. Check the source's unit label.
How many troy ounces are in one regular pound?
One regular pound equals approximately 14.5833333333 troy ounces.
How many troy ounces are in one troy pound?
One troy pound contains exactly 12 troy ounces and equals 373.2417216 grams.
How many pennyweights are in one troy ounce?
One troy ounce contains exactly 20 pennyweights. Each pennyweight contains 24 grains.
How many grains are in one troy ounce?
One troy ounce contains exactly 480 grains. The calculator uses 0.06479891 gram per grain.
How many grams are in one tola of silver?
This converter uses the conventional 180-troy-grain tola, equal to 11.6638038 grams or 0.375 troy ounce.
Does this converter calculate silver purity or value?
No. It converts total mass only. Use the related Silver Value or Silver Melt Value calculator to apply fineness and price.
Why might a scale and calculator result differ?
Check scale calibration, resolution, tare weight, rounding and the selected unit. Confirm especially whether “ounce” or “pound” means troy or regular avoirdupois measure.
